I kinda preferred this place when it was a gay bar, at least then you knew what you were getting. When this place first re-opened it was pumping and fun and we went to see live shows and had a great night. Unfortunately somewhere along the way this place got taken over by groupies who totally annihilated the vibe. They all produce short ironic films, they all wear thick framed ironic sunglasses, and they all skulk around the beer garden glaring at you from behind their ironic hair styles. Shame because it's a great venue with such a pretty beer garden and lovely staff. We need to stage some sort of intervention and re-claim this venue for friendly locals who want to have a good time. We need a Pied Piper of posers, who can play a song on his ukulele, or harmonica, and lead all the groupies on a merry dance to some other venue. Then the good people can get their Ed Castle back. In saying that, Sunday's at Ed Castle are atill awesome because the groupies are all at home working on their films. read more

Not a bad little Pub. What has been posted here about a $10 menu seems a bit deceiving. Looking at their current food menu, it's not exactly $10 but it is quite reasonably priced still. $15 for a schnitzel meal, and cheap starters seems pretty good. The outdoor beer garden is really nice. It's clean and green with lots of shady spots, and choices of bench tables or proper table and chairs sets... As well as having ample space to hold heaps of patrons. The meals are pretty decent for pub meals. The schnitzel meals are almost above average size and quality. I really enjoyed the few times I've dined here and walked away satisfied. The garlic bread is amazing. It's huge made on a large piadina type roll cut into slices with real garlic pieces through it as well as garlic butter. Delicious!! Each night they have something different going on. I think on Thursday evenings they have quiz nights. If you're in the city and looking for a quick, easy, cheap and relaxing place to grab a bite you can't walk past the Ed Castle. read more

Working in Adelaide for a couple of days so thought I'd try dinner at the pub walking distance from my cheap "preferred vendor" hotel. The bartender was nice, polite, cute and adequately moustached, and when I enquired on the best place to dine alone he promptly informed me the beer garden was a winner. The menu is very pub like, with Tuesday being curry night, and lots of "served with chips and salad" type meals, there's even a $10 menu. Lots of good quality tap beer and the before mentioned beer garden was a nice and leafy with plastic chairs but lots of charm. Was going to order the curry of the night, but an intriguing wine list convinced me steak was on the cards. I have a theory that pubs can't cook a steak to order so didn't want to ruin the more expensive rib eye and be utterly disappointed, so went the porterhouse and asked for it rare... Lucky I did, as it came out medium well, but the chips were hot, crispy and nicely seasoned and the salad was small but fresh. Would've given an extra star if they nailed the steak, but it's a great little pub and I enjoyed my dinner here. Next time I'm sent to the City of Churches I'll definitely return but I'll be sure to order the parma... read more

As a member of a touring band, coming to Adelaide has become synonymous with having a Schnitzel at Ed Castle (and subsequently we now refer to South Australia's jewel as 'Schnitzelaide'). Come early, order your schnitzel - the chicken is a well squared staple, with the parmigiana or Diana sauces - take a seat in the dining room and try to name all the headshots on the walls. I have been many times now, and always Bert Reynolds evades me. Try also the Beef Schnitzel, the Fish and Chips, or the Eggplant Parma. Add a pint of Sparkling Ale (NOT "Coopers Green... Are you from out of town or something?") and you're doing it in style. read more

It is a bit of a shame that this pub isn't closer to the centre of the Adelaide, but I suspect that that is what makes this place so great. It has a really relaxed atmosphere with a great little beer garden out the back, and the balcony is just as good with couches and a fine view of the city. It is a shame that I didn't come here sooner because I would see it every time I went past on a bus, but then again with how places tend to change, maybe I didn't want to see it in one of it's former incarnations. The wall decorations also give this pub great character, including a very old map of Australia that still includes New Guinea as one if the territories. Oh, they also have live bands here, but unfortunately I have never had the opportunity of seeing one. read more

I was here for the $10 menu, and I wasn't expecting anything much. And as it was based on someone else's suggestion, I decided to check out the menu online. For $10 you get to choose from 10 dishes? Yeah right. Whatever. Headed over to the Ed Castle, went in, wondering where the dining area was. It was through a doorway on your right, and it looked like they converted a dance floor, complete with a stage, to a dining area. Chill lounge-y music was playing and we sat by the fireplace that was nicely warming the place up, complete with the crackly sound of burning firewood. Nice. Time to order and I looked at the menu. Same menu as online, I guess they're not kidding. Each of us picked a different dish. Philly cheese steak, salt and pepper squid, 200g steak, beef burger, and a bowl of wedges for good measure. But when our meals came, I instantly regretted the wedges. 4 giant plates filled with food, value for money = ticked. The food smelled great and after the first bites, a unanimous "wow this is pretty good!". After about 10 minutes of silence, some plates were empty and others were struggling to be finished. The bowl of wedges was staring at us (me) from the middle of the table, still full, begging to be eaten. I've never felt so reluctant to eat wedges before, but I felt guilty for ordering. So takeaway it is. All in all it was a good first visit to the Ed Castle. It was quality food for $10, and good atmosphere, worth the walk to the quiet end of Currie Street. I'd definitely come check it out again. read more

Great live music venue, I've seen a few bands here and I'm yet to be disappointed. The $11 menu is a winner with all Adelaidians. What's that? Don't like the food? I'm no expert on consumer law, but at that price I'm pretty sure you wave the right to complain. They say winter is coming, and the inside word is with winter a new Ed menu is also coming. Will we see a $12 menu? Only time will tell. Little disappointed to see the old bar removed. Feels less like a hotel, more like a couple of big rooms. I guess venues must inevitably change to meet the needs of their demographic. Also don't forget to ask about drink specials, especially jugs of beer or cider. Just don't drink straight from the jug, (it's not illegal but it is frowned upon). read more

I've been here many times with the purpose of drinking. What I like is that their menu is a bit quirky with these odd horoscopes telling you how you're going to waste your week, maybe even your life. Anywho, I know nothing about the Gay era of this bar, I only really learned about that just now on Yelp. Every time I've been here I've been offered a job, mainly because I always tend to order something a little left of centre that they probably hadn't considered drinking yet. For example, did you know that Gin and Redbull is far more tolerable to drink and get's you drunker? yes sir. It's a dark kind of place, a bit grungy, one of the female bar staff could pass as a hot vampire. The beer garden is pretty decent sized, lots of seating and there are heaters in the winter, thank you!! Now, I'd like to say I'm a bit of a social chameleon, but the truth is I don't really fit in anywhere so I just go everywhere, problem solved, The Ed Castle crowd is a bit 'hipster' in my opinion, pants are a tad too far above the ankles for my liking. read more

Been coming here for the past 5 months and figured it was finally time to review. The $10 menu is pretty rad, especially the pasta! Meals are always consistent and the portion sizes are just right for what you pay. The whole place has a cool, quaint atmosphere with lots of places to chill out and a really chill beer garden that looks perfect for summer. Service here is always friendly and really helpful. There's always a really cool event going on, and gay bingo on a sunday is my new favourite activity. P.S their chips are some of the best in adelaide! read more

More commonly known as the Ed Castle, this pub is a hot spot for a good cheap meal and drink after work. Their unique menu is laid out as a newspaper, which is fun, although finding the menu sections amongst the other business can be annoying. The $10 menu is very popular especially amongst students, and the best thing is the $10 menu is available all week. The eggplant parmi's are super tasty and drowned in cheese, which some may not like but I bask in it. The beer garden is quite large and a great place to relax with friends on warm balmy nights, or even in winter when they pump up the heaters. You can also book out parts of this venue for parties and events, but be sure to ask for all details up front because they have in the past changed details at the last minute. The Ed Castle is also a popular nightlife spot, with the popular 'Plus One' event held on Saturday nights. Dj's please the crowd with a mix of the new and old and there is always a friendly, laid-back atmosphere that makes this place a great place to hang out with your mates. read more

The Ed Castle, situated on the far West end of Currie St in Adelaide City specializes in underground, up and coming, indie and generally heavy music. The venue itself is quite unique, housed in a building dated circa 1837 and boasting Adelaide's longest running hotel license. The building retains much of its historical charm despite the obvious amendments required to convert an artifact to a pumping live music venue and the stage area has something of a vaudeville atmosphere which only conflicts slightly with the throbbing of 100 decibel rock music. The major attraction for me is the L shaped beer garden at the back. Complete with outdoor bar this is certainly one of the bigger beer gardens in Adelaide. The graffiti upon the walls, potted plants and great big tree growing amidst the action make one feel as if chilling in a park, although that park was full of indie-punks and there was a bar in it. The menu here is good and slightly cheaper than other pubs in town. There was also, last time I checked, a 10 dollar menu and some beer specials which were quite decent. When bands are playing there is often a door charge, depending on the night failure to pay the charge may only exclude you from the stage area rather than the entire venue itself, however, on other occasions the opposite is true. read more

The Ed Castle is a tops pub that hosts some pretty decent live music now and then. My time spent in this venue is, however, mostly of the Sunday night variety. The food is pretty good and very cheap with a handful of $10 meals to choose from everyday. They've got different events on through the week and even host pub scrabble on mondays. It's a great hospy Sunday sesh venue when the beer garden is the place to be - it's big and comfortable, just don't fall in the fountain, or climb on the roof a la golden god - Almost Famous stylees (yeah - not cool and really hard to get down). They even have some rancid, ar hrm, I mean DELICIOUS $19 cleanskin bottles of wine if you're feeling particularly thirsty and or pov. You can even do laybacks with them, woot. They'll boot you at about 11pm / 11:30pm... just in time to hit the Zhivvies D floor. read more

They have a $10 menu. All day, every day. On this alone, I am sold. That being said, I am somewhat skeptical of cheap meals - they are totally hit and miss - one places understanding of what $10 entitles you to is very different to anothers - luckily I feel that the Ed Castle gets it right! I've been here a few times over the years - for gigs, for drinks in the beer garden and general dance floor times, but only recently to eat (and enjoy the awesome fun that is 'comedy trivia' on Thursday nights). I've always had a good time here and totally enjoyed the tunes - and affordable drinks. In my first (and hopefully not my last) eating experience here I ordered the egg plant burger - and all I can say is YUM! The burger was so damned tasty, with a 'shiny topped bun' - the best kind. The filling was delish, the caramelised onion working perfectly with the lightly battered egg plant. The chips served in the side were also brilliant - so very delicious and cooked to perfection! I'll be back - not just for the cheap and yummy food or drinks, but also for the Thursday night comedy trivia - get around that, it's free to play and a crap load of fun! read more

Not everything that was once great shall remain that way forever and just like that bottle of fine wine I accidentally left in a hot shed for 10 years the Ed Castle still looks good on the surface but the soul not much more than bad vinegar. I do like this venue a lot. I've often had a good reasonably priced meal here. They often have great music a diverse variety of patrons, and I love the beer garden out the back. My only criticism of this place, is they need to get rid of the rubber floor mats leading out in to the beer garden, they are a trip hazard for ladies wearing high heels, and they need to position a high visibility warning sign where the wheel chair access ramp leads in to the stage room. The first time I walked in there I couldn't see the ramp because the room was dimply lit and I was immediately distracted by the show, so I almost fell and twisted my ankle. They also need to fill in the holes in the timber floor boards located close to the ramp. When they have shows on the room is dimply lit and you can't see the holes in the floor boards, so for ladies who like to wear stilettos, it's easy to get a heel stuck in the floor, or worse, cause personal injury. read more

A few years ago the Ed Castle was a gay bar of unsavoury reputation. There were rumours of beatings, drugs and all manner of anti-social behaviour. However nowadays, post-renovation with new owners, the only anti-social thing at the Ed Castle is the door charge. As the other reviewers have mentioned one of the best things about the Ed Castle is their hospitality and specials, as well as their likelihood to be open and busy when most everything else is closed. Gigs are great here too. I have many a fond memory of dancing my legs to jelly in the front part of the hotel and retiring outside to the beer garden to recuperate with a glass of sangria. Most often, local rock bands will be playing sets on the big nights, but occasionally you'll get a small international group coming through. Sundays are also good for relaxing, chilled out music while you eat lunch. read more
