Best lunch of the trip. One plate was plenty for two!

We were in Edinburgh at the end of November and dropped by this Farmer's Market for some culinary souvenirs. We found a tea purveyor, BeTea, who had some wonderful teas. I'll be stocking up on those on our next trip. Lunch came from a stall called The Whole Hog. I grew up in the American South, where we had "pig pickins" for special occasions. This was a Scottish pig pickin' and OMG, was it delicious! We will definitely be dropping in the next time we are in the city. Meanwhile, I've already placed an order for some tea refills with my son, who lives there, to bring me on his next return to Cali.

A view of all the lovely stalls and a few people visiting - this is near the end of the market (2pm).

Being from Seattle, I'm a huge fan of farmer's markets - good for producers, good for consumers, and good adding something fun to do in the city. It's so much more than just a trip to the grocery store because you get to meet the people and hear about the places behind products - that and what they're selling tends to be significantly better than what you find on the shelf at Tesco or Safeway. This market is no exception; it's mainly run by lovely local Scottish family farmers and individual goods producers. Highlights of this late fall visit: multiple stalls with seafood and delicious smoked salmon, jams and lemon curd galore, hot pastries and pies, both sweet and savory, and an assortment of cheeses, honeys, and sauces to boggle the mind and delight the stomach. A word to the wise: some markets specialize in produce, others in goods, crafts, or lunch foods. This one seems to be all about small batch & preserved foodstuffs, not really a good place to go for pre-made breakfast or lunch. That said, if you're looking for some nice produce or meat for the week it's a great option, and if you're looking for a special condiment made with love for yourself or as a gift it's truly amazing! Had a lovely conversion from Brenda a delightful cheesemaker from Kelso and with some gentlemen at the Slow Food stand, trying to preserve Scotland's traditional ways of making food that is slipping into extinction with the advent of mass production (they even have free samples!) So go to the farmer's market! Support those good people still making food the right way :)

I'm staying just off the Grassmarket, so this particular farmer's market was just a very short walk away - and well worth the trip. It's not huge, and you'll be able to browse all the stalls in just 20 minutes or so. While the selection of fresh vegetables was pretty small, the market has plenty of coffee, cheese, meat, fruit, as well as items like olive oils, soap, mustard, and chutney. Every vendor I purchased from was friendly and seemed to have very high quality items. If I lived in Edinburgh, I'd surely be back.

Ok, so it's something of a rarity for me to be out of my bed before midday on a Sunday, but if and when I am I make a point of heading to the Farmers Market. Although I love living in Edinburgh, the one thing that gets on my nerves is the fact that everything either comes from a mass chain supermarket or a pretentious and overpriced deli. Which is where the farmers market comes in handy. Yes, in terms of price range it's more on a par with the delis than the supermarkets, but the quality is a whole different thing altogether. Whether you want jams, cheeses, stuff to hang on the wall in your kitchen (not really my thin, but I'm sure some people love it!) or meat then you should put this in your diary for this sunday. Even if you don't buy anything, it's ideal just for a wander through.

This first-world market is ripe with colorful buyers and sellers in a communal and leisure-inspiring atmosphere. You'll come with a grocery list of eggs, bread and flowers and leave with chocolate-aubergine marmalade, two-hours payroll worth of cheese, bacon from the farmer's daughter's third favorite pig, hand knitted knickers and the buzz from three £3 lattes. But in this lavish marketplace there are more delights than essentials. While bakers and dairies have a healthy representation, the three vegetable sellers sit between twenty meat vendors, vastly out of proportion to their importance in a balanced diet. One of the veg sellers I spoke with couldn't explain this dearth, but did remark, sadly, that there wasn't enough sun lately for many of his crops to grow. "Everyone asks for beetroot and I gotta say they ain't ready yet. They're only this big now [he indicates a small amount]." Go to celebrate (and support) the local agriculture we're lucky to have, meet kind strangers, and gossip in the open air. It's makes sunny saturday mornings worth a week's wait.

There's always something more exciting about buying your food from a market for some reason. Maybe it's the variety of buying bits and bobs from different stalls, which is just a bit more fun than wandering the refrigerated aisles of a supermarket and doing everything very clinically. I know supermarkets are dependable, convenient, and there for a reason, but the old school feel of bantering away with the primary producers of the food you're buying definitely makes food shopping a more enjoyable process. This is pretty scenic as markets go, with the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and the variety of delightful wares on offer on a Saturday. Everything just looks so much more appealing when it's laid out in market fashion. The last time I came here I absolutely wanted something from every stall, as it all looks amazingly fresh and tasty. There are a lot of meat stalls, selling specialities like venison and wild boar, plus fish, eggs, cheese, bread, fruit and veg, and chutney and conserves.

Are you looking for a culinary journey for your stomach and eyes? Go to the Edinburgh's Farmer Market and feed both. The best way to enjoy the market is to buy yourself a cup of coffee at the beginning and then start to walk around the booths. Smell the fruits, admire the different colours of the vegetables, sample some Scottish cheese, lovely organic beef, a fresh juice or maybe buy a home-made jam like grannie made. The market offers something for everybody. The whole atmosphere makes you relaxed and it's fun to sit down and observe the vivid market life at the foot of the castle!

I got the chicken paella because I didn't think picking apart seafood with my hands was the best idea while wrangling two small kids without a reasonable place to sit down. It was really good, if a tiny bit saltier than I'd like. The spices were top notch and the experience of seeing it made in the huge 6' in diameter wok-like pans was worth it. The bread (we got spelt) was _really_ good and I wish we'd gotten two loaves. Instead, we got only one and just relished the breakfast sandwiches we made with it the next few days. The cheese, jam and produce formed the basis of a lot of what we ate for the next few days and it was much better than what we'd been getting at Tesco.

I was immediately attracted to the plate as I saw people walking around with them. For £5, the plate is huge and will easily fill you up. Unfortunately, the flavor and taste was only okay. It may be best to share, so it's not so overwhelming. It's not bad, but definitely not one of the better paellas I have had. My friend did get the dumplings, which are pretty popular as well though. Either way, cool little spot to grab a bite and walk around. It does get pretty crowded though.

Even stepping foot into this place makes me feel healthy enough to justify cake for supper…read more I'm not going to lie - i'm not a healthy eater. But hailing from the city of all things organic (Vancouver), I like to play the part that I am. Somehow, having an open bag of chia seeds in the house, that I occasionally remember to throw into smoothies when I occasionally remember to MAKE smoothies, makes me feel less guilty about eating Corn Flakes for dinner while I'm slogging through emails. This makes me an adult right? That doesn't mean that the act of buying a meal that doesn't look like it was constructed by a five year old, doesn't tickle my fancy - I love nothing more then following up a Corn Flakeian dinner with a good ol' fashioned organic almond yogurt. Life is about the balance. I also have a deep seeded belief in only using biodegradable and clean house hold products. So when i'm not doing the best in my personal well being - at least i'm looking after the planet as a whole. This place ticks off a few major factors in my strange collaborative idea of "healthy living". First off, it stocks an impressive array of house hold items and is one of the first places i've found that carries multiple lines of personal care items - from Burts Bees to good for ya toothpaste - it was a one stop shop for both my washroom & under the sink. Secondly - it stocks pretty much everything you need to justify future unhealthy meals. From organic quinoa to virgin, cold pressed coconut oil, it's simply screaming: look how healthy you are?! Why yes, you can eat ice cream for dinner! But as many a person as said - living healthy (or in my case, buying excuses) can be pricey. What I will note, is as a newly landed expat, this place IS cheaper than the haunts back home and for that i'm thankful, but compared to the digs you can pick up elsewhere - yes, it's going to cost you an extra dollar. My tip if you fear the price tag? This funky little blue and green ball we're living on needs all the help it can get. If you can't stomach the whole nine yards of good food organic, pare it down. Spend the extra £1 for your dish soap, laundry & shampoo and keep the nasty stuff out of the drains. Then stock up on the hard to find items, or the ones you use frequently and leave the bits & bobs for a cheaper place. Nothing is better than proper, virgin, organic, cold pressed olive oil. Nothing. Will definitely be popping in here time to time to stock up on the must haves. If I could track down a spot to buy E3Live in town, i'd have all my cake justifying staples back in place.
