I came here with my Mum as she had a voucher for afternoon tea. The place is large and although the kitschy decor is a bit much it's certainly a bustling place at the weekends. Usually going somewhere for afternoon tea is always inviting disappointment. I've been for a few afternoon tea's in Edinburgh and it's always a bit of an underwhelming experience. They are usually far too expensive and trying to hard to impress. Cake, scone, sandwiches, tea. It shouldn't be that complicated. Thankfully Mimi's nailed it. There was a special festive edition of afternoon tea, which had we not had the voucher would have been £17.50 (normal price is £15). This seemed pretty reasonable. A large pot of tea was much appreciated. Sandwich tier: (solid start) Turkey/cranberry and salmon/cream cheese. There was also something deep fried in a little filo parcel. No idea what but it was pretty good. Cake tier: (now we're talking): Mince pies. Malteaser/mint slicey thing. Gingerbread-y cake. Meringue rasberry thing. Scone tier: (I think I need to lie down) Miniature sized so you feel better about still eating after all the cake. There was a lot of cream, so ended up with an appropriate 1:1 scone to cream ratio. A box was required to take home the remaining cakey goodness. My Mum thought it was great and wants to come back which is basically why it earned it 5 stars. Not fancy but it was satisfying. This has become a bit of a tradition when the Bucks come to town. Whenever my family are up to visit I always take them here for breakfast before they get the train home. We arrived just before 10am on Sunday, we hadn't reserved a table. They explained that all tables had been reserved but they managed to squeeze in at the back. This was actually quite nice as it was quieter than the busier front part. I have always loved the quirky interior and retro furnishings of Mimi's, it definitely adds to the charm of the place. I like how you can see them creating in the cake kitchen too. The staff are very friendly, attentive and super efficient. I went for something different today, the full vegetarian breakfast, I have worked my way through most of the menu already! My brother made the very clever move of going for the french toast with bacon and maple syrup. I told him he would not be disappointed. The food and drinks arrived in good time and my breakfast was delicious. Especially the vegetarian haggis with their homemade baked beans! My brother wolfed down his french toast and was very pleased indeed. You can't go to Mimi's and not have some cake! We let breakfast settle whilst we had the difficult decision of which cake to go for. You could spend all day gazing in to the glass cabinets of cakey glory! I went for the strawberry meringue cheesecake - absolute heaven! Beatifully light with a crunchy biscuit base. This place is always a winner but book ahead to avoid disappointment. Mimi's Bakehouse, tugged at my sweet tooth with the sign outside the shop advertising that it was the "Best Craft Bakery in Scotland" by the Scottish Baker Awards in 2015. The pastel-walled, frothy, cheery food served on rosy China makes this place an ideal setting for gathering with girfriends over gourmet Scottish breakfast (complete with haggis, black pudding, soft scrambled eggs, and delicious bread) or lovely afternoon tea. I set my teeth into one of the most glorious desserts. I forgot the name, but it was a rich chocolate caramel cake bar with shortbread cookies mashed in and a thick layer of chocolate on top and sprinkled with cookie crumbles and caramel (Rolo-like) candies. It was a nice treat after summiting Arthur's Seat. It is a heavy dessert that is tough to eat in one seating, but I love leftovers. I ordered it three times during my five day stay in Leith. Yes, excessive I know. Bottom line: The desserts at Mimi's Bakehouse are definitely award worthy. The decadent chocolate caramel shortbread bar was my personal favourite. A wee jaunt out to Leith on a cold day was mainly prompted by a desire for some tea and cake and after reading some reviews I really wanted to try Mimi's Bakehouse. The cafe was queued out the door and pretty busy, but after a short wait we were seated. The cafe is larger than it seems, although we were a bit unfortunate to get the table right next to the door which was a bit less atmospheric. With kitsch decor - pink chandeliers and ladies boudoir decor, its quite a cheeky wee place, but I liked it. Staff were aplenty and service was quick and friendly. The stores mantra seems to be "its all about the cake!" and they aren't wrong. Theres a fair selection on the menu, brunch items like rolls, breakfast and some more unusual options like banana caramel french toast. Lunch and main course options including Mac cheese and stovies. I was tempted to have something savoury first, but the veggie sandwich options of egg mayo or cheese weren't totally hitting the spot, and I really couldn't see past the cake. Tempted by the Afternoon Tea, Mr T opted for the buttermilk chicken bap which came complete with coleslaw, jalapenos and spiced mayo with some salad. At £9.95 it wasn't the cheapest but he proclaimed it pretty tasty. I went for a look at the cakes which change daily. Chocolate, carrot, rhubarb and coconut slices, caramel cakes, red velvet were on offer to name a few. I initially decided on the malteser tiffin style cake, but after spotting someone with some aero mint slice I changed my mind.. We both opted for some tea served in little cute Mimi's teapots. My teapigs winter spiced tea tasted and smelt delicious and the cake was pretty substantial. The chocolate biscuit base was topped with a lovely peppermint fondant then layered with what I think was white choc and chunks of Aero. I enjoyed savouring it slowly, but got Mr H to help me finish it off. We'd noticed people taking cakes away in cute little boxes and asked about a few of the treats I'd seen as specials on their facebook page but they weren't on offer or we would have taken some treats home. At £18.50 for two teas, a burger and a cake it wasn't the cheapest and I did think the £3.30 for a tray bake was slightly pushing it. That being said it was really tasty and probably not somewhere I'll get the chance to visit often. I did notice that the place have another smaller branch in Edinburgh city centre so that might be worth a go next time I'm in town. This sort of place will always be popular and busy. Really? A Victorian(ish) Bakehouse in Leith? Oh yes & me very much likey! After their recent expansion, Mimi's Bakehouse has flourished and now more people can enjoy the wonderful treats and food choices on offer. Do take NOTE: There are still waiting lists for the more popular times (!). Even though the boudoir ambiance is catered towards women I did like the especially designed, cheeky pin-up wall paper and the French madame inspired seating snuggle corners. Pink armchairs.. yup. We went for a breakfast on a rainy winter Saturday morning. French toast and a full Scottish breakfast included of black pudding and of course haggis. And to top it we had a prosecco once our fare was devoured. The place is welcoming, clean and unusual. The staff is lovely and well efficient. The welcome is always warm and the takeaway service is very quick. There's always a good and varied selection of cakes and although it might seem a little expensive, the cakes are really worth the money. They usually leave me very full but happy! Oh. My. Lord. I love places that bother to get all of the details right - and Mimi's is one of them. We were passing Mimi's and one of our party was "being good" ...which lasted until we abandoned him to return to the bakery, encouraged by a gentleman who appeared to be the owner. "We're closing in about half an hour but if you would like coffee and cake, we can do that for you" he offered kindly as he held the door open for us. Wow. The black and white decor that contrasted with the bird-egg blue walls, the retro line drawing products featuring stocking-ed ladies, the co-ordinating elements throughout the entire place...it all reeked of someone who had a very clear vision and carried it out to the letter. The menu sounded wonderful but the cake - the cake! - if you have diabetes, best look away now! The cake cabinet was full of the most amazing treats, from rockyroad slice ('normal' and caramel versions), chocolate orange cake, scones, caramel shortbread, coconut slice....it all looked so enormous and so wonderful, it was a little like being a child again, where everything seems over-sized. The service was prompt and friendly and the biggest piece of cake I think I've ever seen was put in front of me. I jokingly asked for my cake, as well as the door-stop, but this was unfair: the cake was light, fluffy, not over-powering like most chocolate cake (which is why I rarely eat it) and the orange ribbon of syrup that accompanied the icing was just the right combination of tart and sweet to make everyone who tried it go "Mmmmm". After I'd had about two mouthfuls, though, I swapped it with my beloved, who had ordered the other thing that had taken my fancy - the coconut slice. A much more manageable size, it was also very good, although the base a tiny bit heavy for my liking. That said, I don't think we left many crumbs!! The banoffee tart had caramel that was the right colour - and consistency. Caramel just might be my topic on Mastermind, and this was good caramel. You could tell just by looking at it... Oh dear. So much in Leith is changing, businesses renovating the landscape. Mimi's Bakehouse appears to be one of those flagship businesses revolutionising the area. They have a booking page on their website...that's right a booking calendar on their website. And this is essential as they get extremely busy! Which is also the reason why I only gave 4 stars instead of 5. 3-5pm on a Sunday and at points could barely hear each other talking! The interior is wonderfully decorated and the staff very friendly. The chai latte was tasty but not quite my favourite. Made with a chai tea bag, water and milk, it was flavourful but I prefer it without water. The red velvet cake...my goodness. I couldn't finish it but it wasn't for lack of trying. Hands down I'd say this was the best Red Velvet cake I've ever had. Moist, creamy, sweet. Delicious. read more

Fantastic little restaurant in Edinburgh. We came in for some afternoon tea and it did not disappoint. The prices were great for the amount of food given. For afternoon tea you get 4 different sandwiches, a sausage roll, 2 different scones, 4 different desserts, and a whole tea cup of your choosing. For 3 of us we ordered 2 "afternoon teas" that included what I mentioned above + a separate tea and it was more than enough for all of us. I will definitely make my way back to try some other things on the menu the next time I'm in Edinburgh. GF cakes and scones :-) Or so I thought. I had heard great things about Mimi's so I was keen to go and with a fellow GF amigo, we headed down to the Shore. We had told Mimi's we would be in so we knew there would be some GF products available. If you are coming for GF cake, then there are better options. We had great tasting scones, however, they crumbled into little bits and we ate them with jam and cream with a spoon. Our cupcake was just a normal iced fairy cake, so no lavish creations like those at Cuckoo's. I have been to Mimis a few times now and this place is always lively, especially on a weekend. Families, couples, dates, friends - all looking forward to a comfortable hour with deliciously served cakes, afternoon tea nibbles, substantial breakfast or soups and much more. The interior is very colourful of pink, black girlish boudoir patterns. Comfy couches cover the corners and more hidden quiet places are to be found towards the back on way to the toilets. We ordered afternoon tea, one including champagne. The sandwiches were soft and juicy with 3 flavours, egg, tuna and cucumber. The plain and fruit scones were tiny, but a perfect size for an afternoon tea. Last but not least the little cakes that topped the tower of delights. Somehow a bit too sweet for our and my taste, besides the meringue pieces, which I still tried to manage. When we were there we got squeezed into the same room as a massive hen party of about 20 hens. Needless to say it was very noisy. We had to talk very loud to understand each other. I visited Mimi's Bakehouse for the first time a few weeks ago, opting for a girly afternoon tea for a friend's birthday. We opted for a Saturday afternoon around 1 or 2, and it's a good thing we booked because the place was PACKED. Everything from baby showers to hen dos to birthday parties, people flocked there. Contrary to my assumption, Mimi's doesn't just serve cakes and afternoon teas, you can go there for a full proper lunch as well. I can't comment on the proper savoury food, but our afternoon tea was gorgeous. The tea selection was extensive, the sandwiches were lovely (and a standard selection), and admittedly the scones with clotted cream and jam were the highlight! I particularly loved the cinnamon in one set of scones. The cakes were of course gorgeous, though admittedly by that point we were nearing breaking point so, while we made a point to try everything, some was inevitably left behind. All in all a lovely experience. Don't come here expecting a relaxing afternoon, though, it truly was (understandably) packed and while we were able to take our time, we weren't exactly given the impression that we would be welcome to spend the afternoon. read more

When we arrived, we were told the next table for four that was available would be in about 45min time. We decided to wait, and 5min later we got a table. Then we ordered our food... and waited... about 30min later, we got our food. Got the mac and cheese for my child and paid extra for the "crispy pancetta" which was soft and mixed into the mac and cheese. Both children's dishes were full of salad and coleslaw, with about 1/3 of the plate with the main dish. Overall, the food was OK. Decided to get some dessert, since that is what they were known for. It was our last morning in Edinbugh and I'd had Mimi's in Leith saved on TripAdvisor as a great option for afternoon tea. Since we wouldn't be there at tea time, we went for breakfast. My first impression was "wow! It's cute in here!", it's playful and fun without being so frilly that a guy might be grumpy about it being too girly. Our waitress was very attentive and sweet, it was only her second day and she'd just moved from Dublin. It was obvious she and the other servers enjoyed their job, everyone was smiling and helpful. I have been squeamish about trying haggis, so cheated and ordered Mimi's vegetarian Scottish breakfast. Every element was delicious! I really liked the veggie haggis, it reminded me a bit of a grain oatie veggie patty, the "sausage" were especially good, iit was like a creamy leek croquette. The scrambled egg was nicely fluffy, the grilled tomatoes well seasoned along with their homemade baked beans. It also came with Mimi's homemade bread toasted test was great and ridiculously yummy French butter. It lived up to the "belly busting" as promised on the menu and I couldn't finish it all. I also got an americano and latte, both were very good. My husband tried the roll with bacon, he was thrilled! It was packed with delicious bacon on a very fresh, delicious roll. Overall it was my favorite Edinburgh dining experience, I have no hesitation recommending it. We sat near where they showcase all the desserts and everything looked scrumptious. OK so thankfully none of you know where I live because I'm going to go against the grain here and not trash Mimi's but rebel against the hype. Yes the decor is lovely, the menu quaint and yes they've managed to find a niche that everyone seems to have fallen in love with BUT guys you're averaging. I feel like a number of the dishes and cakes here are made by a good home chef. There's an edge you're missing. Oh I'm so sorry but the cakes aren't that amazing, often I find they lack any flavour other than sugar or a cheaper version of chocolate. However, there are some dishes that are lovely, like the french toast for example and it is a great spot to meet with the girls and the buggys for a coffee and some brunch. I'll always go back as it's convenient and not horrific. So overall I think a 3 out of 5 is a fair mark. Step up your game guys! :) read more

The scrambled eggs tasted very buttery and had a reconstituted texture. They are well known for cakes and afternoon tea with moms and their children. Walking into Mimi's you'd be forgiven for thinking you were on a film set from the 1950's, and if you were, I'd bet all the wonderful scones and cakes in the Bakehouse that Doris Day and Rock Hudson would be acting out a scene from their latest romantic comedy! There is such a fabulous atmosphere in Mimi's, it's cosy, quirky, delightfully 50's and I just love coming here! (if only I had my own Rock Hudson to gaze at across the cakes, it would be perfect!) On the wall above the serving area, a phrase states "It's all about the cake!"...and it surely is! The cakes are delicious, innovative, colourful and mouth-watering, and there is always something different to try each time you come. However, the scones are my personal favourite! They're huge, fluffy, warm and yummy with jam and clotted cream. They are, by far and away, the best scones I have eaten in Edinburgh! In addition to the cakes, Mimi's also does a great range of breakfasts, savoury dishes and sandwiches, and my flatmate will always order the Mexican Quesadillas every time she's here as they're "so delicious and fresh!" I'm so pleased the Bakehouse has been extended to the property next door, in order to create more seating space, and it's a testament to it's popularity that the place was still jam packed! Whilst I've usually been lucky in getting a seat the times I've randomly popped in, I'd definitely book if you are going at the weekend, for something special, or with a larger group for afternoon tea. I headed here recently on a Sunday afternoon, without a reservation and was surprised when the waitress could seat us. The ~12 people who entered after us were not so lucky! Mimi's is fantastic. The week before a friend had brought some Mimi's cakes to a dinner and we were all blown away by the quality and taste so when I had a visitor in town I knew we had to give it a shot. So we wandered in and had ourselves some lunch and a natter.I had the soup/sandwich combo, which was pretty good and (relative to Edinburgh fancy cake places anyway) was reasonably priced. Across from me some kind of goats cheese quiche came as a ginormous wedge and looked absolutely magical. After I had a scone with cream and jam and it was gooooood! I loves me some cream and jam on scones! I also got a cupcake to take home for the boy which was given in a small box with 'Mimi's' stamped on the top. The place is decorated in pink and black with sexy pin-up type ladies baking cakes and some sweet vinyls which will convince you that it's a girly shmirly place. The crowd looked to be mainly hen parties and mother/daughter combos enjoying afternoon tea. I was absolutely touched to see a small boy, no more than 4, come in and buy a cupcake for his mother and then look absolutely chuffed as he walked out with the box. It made my day! read more
