Been at that park million times, finally yesterday spent quality time with myself in a solo picnic (the joys of always carry and adorable picnic basket in my trunk!) And had the chance to breathe and meditate in nature. There was the background noise of children in the playground but my ears focused and concentrated in the bird singing and other type of sounds. Very relaxing place. Some pet parents talking to each other, some people taking a nap, a few others tending the beautiful flower and veggie gardens at the corner next to the playground. It is the perfect city park where you can spend hours reading a book and doing nothing else than checking the clouds passing by. read more

Pros- we had the park to ourselves, my daughter and I for the first 45 minutes to an hour. Then it started filling up. There was a family with 3 or 4 kids age 8 or so and under. One of their little boys through a big rock towards my daughter and it nearly hit her. Parents didn't even have him apologize. This was on a Friday afternoon. Kids are a pure product of their parents and it's sad they don't get disciplined for nearly harming another human, on purpose. The kid was laughing. Shame on his mom and dad for not teaching him how wrong on so many levels that was. Had the rock hit my daughter, there would have been serious consequences including calling the authorities that were the ones who referred us to that park. read more

This is a nice park for down town north area of the Palo Alto community. They have a volleyball area and a basketball area as well as a play area for kids. They have a community garden. This is a great place for a picnic, to bring your children. We did a community training for disaster preparedness at the park while it was open and it was really nice to see the people all playing with their children and games going on with volleyball and basketball. Highly recommend this park for a quick bite to eat or a place to have fun. read more

Great park & playground for all ages. Sandboxes, swings, slides. Bring some cardboard for the concrete slide or take a chance finding some left over. Beautiful community garden. Plenty of trees with shade. Grassy areas to lay out a blanket or many benches with backs to sit. Nice walking path around the park as well. read more

Cute park in the neighborhood. Moms in the area seem to love it. There are always kids in the playground or families picnicking on the grass. Perfect for families. There's an area for basketball and an area to play volleyball too. There's also a beautiful community garden with roses, flowers, and vegetables. I like to come here for a short work out sessions. Edith Johnson Park, on the corner of Kipling and Hawthorne is a nice place to set up for a small picnic, play with kids in the playground, watch or play in a game of beach volleyball, shoot some hoops, or throw around a frisbee. People bring their toddlers to the Park, walk their dogs, and typically include it as part of their jogging path (It's one of the scenic elements on my route). Definitely a family park, though you will also find groups of teens, couples, or the occasional musician playing on the lawn. The park is about a block all around, which is a decent size. It is far enough from the bustle of University to be quiet, but still conveniently close enough if you want to make your day a mix of things. This is my favorite park in Palo Alto. read more

I play Volleyball ball here with friends Sunday afternoon! Pretty nice park. Friendly people and pretty busy for such a small park. They have a little jungle gym for kids. Nothing extravagant but you see families lay down a blanket and just hang out. The atmosphere is good and the park is big enough for a lot :) read more

The main attraction here at Edith Johnson Park is a fairly wide concrete slide. Kids need to use an old cardboard box to go down the slide. The slide can be a heck of a lot of fun for your kids, but you need to be sure to have an old cardboard box or two on hand; if you don't your kids might be very disappointed :-( Apart from the need for some unusual equipment, this park is pretty cool - come prepared, and you'll doubtless enjoy it :-) read more

I frequent this park almost daily because of work & always enjoy it. It's a good sized park with a terrific playground for children. They also have a small community garden, basketball court, & sand volleyball court. There is a grass area that's large enough for a group to play soccer & other activities. I've seen everything from frisbee playing, yoga, & T'ai Chi being done here. They also have picnic tables & benches along the perimeter of the park. BYOC= Bring your own cardboard This sweet little park has a gated playground with a wide concrete slide. Usually there are plenty of old flattened cardboard boxes you can use to go down the slide with. It's wide enough for a couple of kids to slide down at once but most people tend to err on the side of caution and have them go one at a time. read more

We have come here several times after doing some errands in the Palo Alto area. This is a pretty cute park. The main attraction is the concrete slide. Kids use large pieces of card board to slide down. There's several swings and a large play structure with a tube slide, climbing ropes, and shorter slide for younger kids. There's also a water table but it's been out of order for the last few months. It seems that the late morning hours are when it's the busiest. read more

I haven't taken as much advantage of this park as I should have. I mean it has a basketball hoop that is usually free. There is a huge place to play frisbee enjoy a book, or just have a picnic. There are a lot of doggies in the area too so sometimes you get to meet a playful pup. There is a place for kids to play in too. I am sort of jealous of them because I don't remember such a place when I was a kid. This thing even has a large slide which I see kids and adults take cardboard and slide down. Looks really fun. On a nice day it is the place to be and it's sort of hidden from the busier downtown section so you can sort of have fun and not feel like someone will run you over as you try to get your frisbee from the street :) There is also a community garden which I still don't get (I'm a horrible community member I guess) but good to know it exists ... maybe it exists as a fuel supply in case of zombie invasion. read more

I like this park, if for no other reason than it provides me a convenient place to crash out on the way back from the bars when walking home on a Saturday night/Sunday morning; and believe me, I have woken up here a few times ... In the day time this park is filled with kids and parents, people walking their dogs and the sounds of birds. It's a very nice little space, located in a quiet area of Palo Alto. They have a basketball court here, and a sand pit/volley ball area as well. There's also a playground (see paragraph 2, above) with a bunch of things kids love: swings, slides, etc. The layout of the park is about 1 block square, with a large open area in the center; the basketball/volleyball courts are to the south and the playground to the north. read more

The park is great---don't get me wrong. I am from out of town and visit my parents who live down the street on a weekly basis. This week I had my daughter and granddaughter with me. This one time I was shocked! PARENTS: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR SITTERS / AU PAIRS ARE DOING! In one case, a young European woman had three little blonde German girls: one had a filthy diaper the entire hour I was there and the other two girls were getting knocked around because of other toddlers or play equipment. No one was watching the goings on. Another woman had a 2 year old and wasn't watching her at all! The girl had climbed the cement slide and teetered on the cement stairs where an adult should have been watching (especially since older rambunctious boys were playing there -- not to mention it is near the corner of the park hidden from her view). Usually mothers watch their children with interest. No one was interested in these children. When I called out to find out who the girl on the slide belonged to, I was told that Americans hover their children too much; She commented to the other woman that the girl's father is Norwegian and it's common to let children play unsupervised. The woman returned to her book and drawing ignoring the 2 year old who wandered out of sight yet again. If you have a sitter or au pair, please check up on the activity unannounced. I was shocked at the lack of concern for these children. I could be wrong that there is no relation, but if these are the mothers, they are truly uninformed about children's capabilities, possible risk, or, just plain lazy. read more

I love this little neighborhood park because I can walk there, put a blanket down and read in the sunshine while watching kids learn to throw ball, dogs chasing each other around or adults running after their toddlers. True to the Palo Alto theme, this park is one of the greatest parks for children that I have ever been to. There's much to like about this wonderful park, but I would like to call attention to the wonderful concrete slide tucked in the corner! How many places in the world have such an installation? Not enough! Just the perfect size for my 2 1/2 yr old, who started doing circuits on the slide with only a little bit of encouragement. Plenty of kids to play with - but not too many! nice little park in downtown palo alto, but since it's a couple blocks from the main strip on university ave, it's on the quieter side. recently, i've been coming here to do post-run stretching and ab work with my running group and there's always lots of space on the grassy field to do this. there's a basketball court and a large sandy area (perfect for beach volleyball). i always see a lot of people making good use of the grassy area though, whether to sit/lie down and lounge around, or play with their kids, or use it for exercise purposes. there is a playground with a structure at the hawthorne st side of the park. next to the playground is an enclosed set of privately tended gardens with really pretty flowers. this is quite a big park considering its proximity to downtown. there are benches along the perimeter of the park, as well as a single bench with tables in the middle of the park in case you want to have a picnic. read more

Great park for kids. Has a big open space for throwing the ball around and a fenced in play yard with lots of equipment and sand. The proper name of the place is Edith Johnson Park, but we call it "concrete slide park" as it has a big concrete ramp that kids love to slide down (bring your own cardboard box). There is a water feature in one of the sand pits which has great magnetic attraction for kids, so brace yourself for a wet and sandy experience at this park. This is also the site of a community collective garden which is kind of cool too. The park is walkable to downtown Palo Alto and we often head to a nearby cafe or ice cream shop for a treat afterward. Only downside I see to this park is there's no onsite restroom, otherwise it's a winner. read more

Fun park with a nice sized play structure with some unique features. Come prepared for your kids to get wet in the water feature. The tire swing is also a nice thing that you don't see often anymore. Also has a really fast curvy slide and lots of places to climb. This is a neat park, we will be back. read more

I love this park but..... As a near by resident I love to bring my toddler here and it'd really a great and need resource for the weekend when I need a place for my toddler to run around. But I hate the parents that dump their kids in the play ground (these kids are much older and bigger) and the parents go back to nap in their minivan that's parked on the street. All the other kids have aparent on site and are supervised EXCEPT for these kids and they push around the little ones. Honestly they give certain racial groups a bad reputation. read more
