Personally I had an excellent customer service experience at the DMV. I got there read the clearly…read morelabeled board to scan and sign in and wait for the number to be called. I verified with the security officer Gilbert was calm, professional and gave clear confirmation of the process. It was a tad confusing because I was applying for a minor to have a real id and the online document center wouldn't allow me to submit the forms required for whatever reason. Gilbert kindly assisted me so I could verify properly prepared once I got to the window for service. The system was easy to understand. You are texted a number, the number shows up on a screen in the DMV when you are called and it is called overhead. Viewing the text allows you to see your place in line correspond to the letter being called. There are multiple windows serving corresponding letters. At the service counter our transaction was fast because the application had been completed and submitted online. I handed over the appropriate documentation that I knew I needed including birth certificate, social security, two letters showing proof of address for the minor, and my drivers license to sign the forms required at the DMV. The gentleman serving us was also professional l, quick and to the point. He quickly verified and scanned all info, her fees were paid and she took her picture walking out with a paper copy in hand, being told to track it and how and when the id should arrive! My only complaint which is NOT customer service related is about the restroom. I was sitting approximately 30 feet from the restroom, every time the door opened a horrific smell filled the lobby. The smell was beyond restroom smell.. this was like maybe a city issue under with sewage pipes. I can't pretend to know what it was, I just know it made my stomach upset each time.

I am sharing my experience with the Madera DMV in the hope that someone at a higher level who…read moregenuinely cares about customer service and accountability will take notice and address the issues at this location. I understand that DMV employees deal with all types of customers every day--people with language barriers, frustrated customers, and those who are respectful and patient. I recognize that isn't an easy job. However, that should not excuse poor customer service, inconsistent information, or a lack of proper employee training. My son and I first visited the Madera DMV to replace his learner's permit after it had expired. We assumed the process would be straightforward since all of his information was already in the DMV system. We were wrong. On our first visit, we were told we needed proof of residency. On our second visit, after bringing the requested documents, we were told we also needed proof that he had completed his online driver's education. On our third visit, after obtaining that documentation, we were then told we needed his birth certificate. After making multiple trips and waiting anywhere from one to three hours each time, we politely asked if there was a checklist of everything required so we could avoid having to return again. It seemed like every visit resulted in a new requirement that could have easily been communicated from the beginning. At that point, because my son was getting close to turning 18, we decided to forget about the permit and simply apply for a California ID card instead. We paid the $40 fee and received the ID, only to discover that both his height and weight were incorrect. We returned to the DMV to have the mistake corrected. Instead of acknowledging the error, we were told that "the DMV never makes mistakes" and that we would have to pay another $40 for a replacement card. Reluctantly, we paid the fee because we wanted an accurate ID. When the replacement arrived, it still contained the exact same incorrect height and weight. At that point, enough was enough. We contacted the DMV manager because this level of incompetence and lack of accountability is unacceptable. If businesses in the private sector operated this way--requiring customers to make repeated trips, providing inconsistent information, charging additional fees to correct mistakes, and refusing to take responsibility--they simply wouldn't stay in business. My purpose in sharing this isn't to attack every employee at the Madera DMV. There were a few individuals who were courteous and informative, and I appreciate them. Unfortunately, they were the exception rather than the rule. I hope someone within DMV leadership takes a serious look at what is happening at this office. Employees need consistent training so customers receive accurate information the first time. Equally important, customer service should matter. People shouldn't be made to feel like they're an inconvenience when they're simply trying to complete a required government process. The hours my son and I spent waiting, the repeated trips, the inconsistent information, and the refusal to acknowledge obvious mistakes made what should have been a simple transaction an incredibly frustrating experience. The public deserves better, and so do the employees who strive to do their jobs well. I sincerely hope this feedback leads to meaningful improvements at the Madera DMV.
