I enjoyed my visit to Edwards. It has everything you could need. The commissary is great, clean, stocked, and great customer service. The thrift store was awesome, but with amazing employees. This is a hard 1. For ANYONE who hears you can do walk-in appointments with DEERS. do not come here. I was turned away from an E3 visitors gate guard saying I cannot go in. I proceeded to call the DEERS office, and they said, I could come in as a walk-in, but they cannot tell the gate guards what to do. Kinda shitty considering they see all the paperwork I am veteran, I've got all my documentation, have a BA disabled ID card, all that. But no, knowing that I traveled A FUCKING TRIP away, no. State Prison, and the largest "Logistical Airport" in the Western United States: a Jumbo-Jet Graveyard devoted to storing, dismantling, and/or repairing gigantic commercial planes that are falling apart or wrecked). an ea is ideally located for shopping, sightseeing, and recreational activities. Edwards AFB is the stuff of Aviation legend. It is and should be on the top of any serious aviation fanatics bucket list. No other place in the world has more aviation firsts, to its credit. From the exploits of Chuck Yeager, to the Space Shuttle, to whatever is out there in the California desert, it all began here. I always add this opening paragraph to my aviation reviews to help explain why I am so obsessed with all things flying: Lets be honest here I am an aviation junkie, nerd, geek, spazz or whatever pejorative is enjoying prominence, so its pretty hard for me to give a bad review of any aviation museum. Having grown up essentially flying during during the golden age of travel (the early to late 70's). And being fortunate to have a father who job basically tuned us into globetrotters, I love everything about planes. Military, civilian, it does not matter. Better mind you if they are in the air (and better yet If I am am flying in them) but even on the ground I love them. To step out on the dry lake is like stepping on hallowed ground. So much of the history of aviation began here its crazy. From the dawn of the jet age with the testing of the Bell Aircraft P-59 Airacomet, to the first flying wing bomber the Northrop YB-49, The X-1 that Chuck Yeager rode to immortality, to the X-15 and hundreds of others. it ALL happened here. While most have seen the movie, Tom Wolf's classic novel "The Right Stuff" really delves into Edwards and what made it special: The People. The base is more or less inaccessible unless you are military, a contractor, work for NASA etc. For years, we have driven around the base and once we get close (usually driving to Las Vegas etc" I start scanning the skies. You simply never know whats going to up and flying. In 2009 I made the trek out to the Desert for the one and only airshow they have had since 911. It was a magical show for many reasons. Not only did we get on the base, the variety of planes on the flightline and the in the air was staggering. Planes I had read about but never seen like the F-16XL. It was the first time I had seen a B-2 flying. Freed of the usual noise restrictions and airspace constraints, the planes were moving fast and often low. Seeing a B-1B 200 feet over the runway moving at over 600 knots is something I will never forget. Something that big moving that fast and that low was staggering. It was much more intimate than the much bigger Nellis show and the crowd that made the trek were all hard core aviation types, so the conversations that sprang up were fantastic. The staff on hand were amazing. A F-22 Raptor test pilot spend almost 15 minutes answering my sons questions and letting him take pictures with his stuffed animal and never once looked put out. Everybody was friendly and accommodating. Thank you all for your service to help keep us safe. At the end of the show we saw a spectacle that I was completely unprepared for. Every aircraft that flew that day launched and did a mass flyby. To see a B-2, B-52, and a B-1B in formation was awesome. It is my hope that they start doing shows again, for I would attend in a heartbeat. read more

Went to the show on Saturday. Great show. Many aircraft to in the air and on the ground. However, there were many things that need to ne improved. 1-Getting to where you park took too long. It's 23 miles to the parking lot. 2-Parking rows are not identified. Spent almost an hour trying to find my car. Finally I asked for help and they had a person drive me around. This was a real problem for us seniors. 3-Portapotties need to be placed nearer to the parking lots. After a long drive to get to parking they were to far away. 4-Next show please put a sign by all aircraft to identify them. I worked in the industry for years and was not able to identify all the aircraft. The show was a great way to show the public what our money does for us. read more

We had to make a last minute, late night night reservation as we were traveling through on our road trip. We stayed in one of the three bedroom houses on base and were blown away with how accommodating the person helping with the reservation was....and with how clean the house was. It was such a relief to stay somewhere we felt safe and were able to spread out for a night. Over 5,000 miles on a road trip and my family was ready for that! If you're a military family, I highly recommend staying here if needed. read more

The absolute worst place to work. Especially if you are a female. They do not take harassment seriously. They tell you to speak up whenever any issues arise but when you do the pretend to act concerned. They do nothing, treat you like the problem, and you now have to deal with the retaliation. The leadership is terrible and and they do not care about their employees. read more

I didn't know you could review the base until today when I accidentally ran across a negative (although absolutely hilarious) review. So here's my take: I will admit when my family moved to Edwards, my first thought was "This is it?..." and going to school on base I hated it. Not that Desert is any worse than any school... small class sizes and just being the new kid just had me homesick. Now that I'm working at Edwards, I have a much greater appreciation for it. Immersing myself in volunteering opportunities has made me realize how genuine the community is here. You really get close to the people you work with, which can be bittersweet with the turnover rate of military personnel. The museum is a really cool stop to make, way better than I would have imagined. It is indeed inside the gate so you will either need bass access or to have someone sponsor you on BUT they are working to get it moved outside the gate so off base-ers have the opportunity to see it. The food court is pretty limited but the employees are pretty helpful in my experience and very friendly. The BX and commissary you do have to have a military or dependent ID to shop at but the gas station civilian and contractors can use which is SUPER nice to fill up at. Much less expensive than off base or even Costco sometimes. There is tons of flying every day on base so I recommend eating lunch outside every now and again and plane watching. It's warm most of the year, which is a pro for me, but it's a quick drive to anything you could want to do. Skiing/ snowboarding- mountain high or mammoth, beaches, LA, etc. The speed limit is slower than I'd like but it is strict so it's wise to suck it up and slow down. Honestly there is so much to be proud of at Edwards. If you need to have your eyes opened to it's greatness, shoot me a message. There's so much more to say. read more

attention air show traffic you must have a cac card to enter via south gate. south gate is not for general public use. if you're here for the air show, you must go to main gate! don't waste your time (and hold up the military traffic) waiting outside south gate! read more

OMG we went there yesterday took us an hour to find parking Once we got off the freeway and I might add unmarked parking admits 55000 other cars no way to be able to find your car, parking was unmarked k walk for 2 miles no schedule couldn't tell what was going on had to wait half an hour for a hot dog It was a very bad experience so sad I was so looking forward to it ever so sad read more

A complaint of dirt?....Edwards is in the middle of the damn desert what do you expect? which is a great place for off roading, dirt biking, outdoor hikes and great desert scenery. Loud noise and constant rumbling is a relative thing around an air base. It's a military base, where they fly and maintain a variety of aircraft and have jets taking off and landing on a regular basis to protect YOU!!!!!!!!! No, this aint the Brentwood or Hollywood country club or city park and security will probably NOT let you on base to wander around unless you have some sort of base affiliation. I really enjoy living by the base. When they are out performing speed tests you can feel the sonic booms explode over the house. Although the dogs hate it. In Rosamond we are blessed wirh nice sized back yards and the helicopter pilots fly so low they wave to us and that really drives the mutts nuts. At times at night it is really interesting to live by the base. The bright lights can be seen from miles, then the lights go out suddenly. Nasa I'm watching you. I know. I enjoy the fact I can hear the jets break sound barrier. Civilians cannot be allowed on a military base unless you had military family or connections and they were to bring you into base. I enjoy how they have restaurants, bowling alley, pools, horse stables, and many more! It's a decent place to live. read more
