Doctor Edwin Chan. One of the best doctors I have seen and talked to in my 34 years of life. He is my primary care doctor for the past 15 years. He is also my older brother's primary doctor as well. And my brother goes there most often than I do and he loves him as well. Thats 2 reviews of 5 stars right here. He is professional, soft spoken, knowledgeable and most important, very patient willing to explain things that we don't understand. The way how he speaks to you, you can feel he cares about you and being very sincere. The medical staff in the office. I understand they have their side of "personalities" especially Angela. Maybe its because I know and understand the way to talk to people so her style of communication does not really affect me and I speak to her alot of times. Can she improve on it? Yes sure but thats the way how asian people communicate and thats not out of disrespect. Knowing this place has TONs of patients because he is indeed a good doctor, you will need to make sure you come earlier than your appointment time / come as early as possible if you decide to walk in. The front reception woman called Angela had horrible attitude. She doesn't care about patients at all, very rude. A worst human being. Even with an appointment, the waiting line is still over one hour. Today I witnessed she let all patients waiting outside the office, at the hall, over more than one hour, with no chairs provided. There were many elderly patients standing outside waiting over 1.5 hours. She made no apologies. If I can give them no star, I would. read more

Just tried to cancel an appointment via phone call. I called and they answered pretty quickly, only to put the phone down WITHOUT any greetings or putting me on mute or notifying me of waiting. The receptionist or whoever idk was talking to another patient over the phone and I could hear their conversation. Not professional at all. I waited on "hold" for 8 minutes only for them to hang up on me without even talking to me. During that 8 minutes, someone else called and they picked up and was able to help them right away. But they did not even bother to talk to me before that person called. Reminder, I just wanted to cancel my appointment. This whole ordeal should not have taken 10 minutes and me hearing someone else getting helped before me, even though they called after. read more

I would give 5 stars to Dr. Chan. He is very professional and caring. But I would give 0 star to the front desk ( Angela and the mandarin speaking new girl) They have horrible manner and bad customer service. They will try every way to blow you off and not helping you to get the message to Dr. Chan. Dr. Chan asked me to call the office the other day. The mandarin speaking girl picked up and put me on hold. It was cut off after 3 mins for couple times. I have been trying for an hour and they avoid to pick up my call. Later on, I use another phone to call. She picked up right away and can recognize me right away. They even admitted the machine will cut me off after 3 min on hold!! read more

I have been trying to schedule an appointment for many times since 6month ago, because I've always been told by front desk the appointment are fully booked for whole month, and then when I finally scheduled appointment for one, the front desk call me in last minute and cancelled me( their reason: Dr will be out of town) it happened twice in 6 month and I have not been able to schedule an appointment ever since oct 2018 till May 2019 Looks like the office staff are replacing my appointment for some reason, no matter the reason is, this is the most ridiculous experience that I've ever seen. read more

I recently changed insurance and had to find another PCP. After researching, I came across Dr. Chan who is close to home and has relatively positive reviews. Having consulted Yelp prior to going to my appointment, I decided to start things off to a good start by speaking Cantonese to the receptionist (a Yelper had said they are nicer to Cantonese speakers). Not sure it worked or I'm just naturally charming, but service was decent. Apparently while unable to make a 2nd appointment over the phone after first one was canceled due to system upgrades, there was miscommunication. I was told I would be a walk in when in reality someone had rescheduled my initial appointment to be a 9:00AM. I checked in at 9:30 announcing that I'm a walk in only to which they exclaim, "You're late!" There was also some miscommunication with my insurance. Seems like things aren't thoroughly communicated amongst all staff. As for the wait, I fortunately didn't wait too long. I waited a little less than an hour, which is acceptable in my book for a busy Saturday. Especially if I was "late." Consultation: I went for a regular checkup since I have not seen a doctor for the past year. In the case I might be dying of something that I didn't know about, I thought I'd play it safe and just get a quick checkup. Dr. Chan was extremely nice. He reminds me of my uncle. Typical Hong Kong man who you can tell was raised when HK was still under British rule. Educated, poised, polite. My check up was quick yet thorough. Dr. Chan is the type of doctor that listens as much as he enjoys talking. Lets me speak of my concerns while answering all of my questions. When I asked for a particular topical medication I was on, he quickly agreed to continue prescribing it to me as long as I said it worked. The cherry on top was he even offered to write me refills so I wouldn't have to come back. As my consultation came to an end, he told me that I didn't need to get physicals that frequently since I'm still young. He then asked for my email address and said he will email me results so I won't have to come back. WOW!! In this day and time a doctor that actually cares about his patients and their well being!! Not just someone after my copay. The US health system can use a few more doctors with this style of practice. All in all, I hope I can continue to see him. Definitely a PCP I'd recommend. read more

Staff failed to arrange appointments and patient flow properly despite knowing ahead of time that appointment for the day will be severely delayed for over 2 hours. It seems to be a pattern and requires improvement. Terrible customer service and unacceptable. We decided to switch doctor for next annual check up and informed the staff while we are waiting, and One called Angie sent us the release form via email before we had a chance to talk to Dr. Chan. He takes time to listen, evaluate, and prescribe. His undivided attention to his patience is old school and you never find that now a days. I am changing my review to a one star, and zero star if I could, simply because the incompetence and rudeness of the receptionist. Dr. Chan is a good doctor, but too bad that he is tolerating a ridiculously RUDE staff. Today I called to make an appointment at 6pm, she said "call back tomorrow, we're closed," and then hung up on me. OK, my bad. I called the next day, this time at 4:30pm to make an appointment, she puts me on hold. For 15 minutes. You wonder why I stay on hold for that long? Because I was pissed at that point and wanted to see how bad the service can get. I hung up after 15 minutes and called back. I asked, "What happened? You put me on hold for 15 minutes!" All I got was a "click." She hung up on me. I called again, and I said, not yelled, "Why did you hang up on me?" She played dumb with me and said "I didn't do that, why you say I put you on hold?" Then she probably turned away and uttered something in Cantonese, pretending to be asking another person if "somebody" had put "someone" on hold and forgot about it. She turned back to the phone, no apology, as if nothing had happened, and asked me, "so, you want to make an appointment?" That's when I knew that I was through with this place. It's a shame because I still maintain that Dr. Chan is a really good doctor. But there comes a point where the trouble of going through the process is not worth the end result. Dr. Chan is GREAT!!! I have been with him for 8 yrs. The receptionist/nurse are TERRIBLE!!!!! Their service suck big time. I called to asked if the doctor can refer me to different dermatologist. They put me on hold for 10 mins and asked me why do I need a different dermatologist. They put me on hold again for another 10 mins after I explained. Then I got hung up. I was so PISSED and I call them again asking them why they keep putting me on hold. Then they tell me that the insurance I have only cover one dermatologist. If they knew the answer, how come they put me on hold twice?! Everytime when I am sick and waiting for my turn to see the doctor. All I hear was the nurses GOSSIPING!!! I tried to get a prescription renewal, and the pharmacist told me they faxed the clinic the renewal request FIVE TIMES and have not heard back. I tried to call but no one picks up. I also tried to get a copy of my blood test results and that took multiple follow ups before they finally responded. Yes the reception lady will love you if you speak Canto, but unfortunately not everyone speaks Canto. Plus, why should anyone have to suck up to the receptionist for good service at the doctors? I've been to this office a few times already and it seems that every visit is just horrendous. The Dr. himself is alright... but the staff he hires... Rude... Extremely RUDE! Expect to put up with nonsense from the receptionists (yes, they're ALL unpleasant) from the moment you make an appointment to your actual visit it is NOT worth the aggravation and high blood pressure! Unless you're related or friends with the receptionists, I would totally steer clear of this doctors office. I've been there four times and 3 out of the four times, I waited nearly an hour (with appointment) while another patient who strolls 45 minutes after I did address one of the receptionists as "Auntie" gets in right away. Edwin Chan is a great doctor. Too bad his staff is corrupt and terrible. I went in to get my TB test required to be a teacher, and paid the $20 fee. However to get my results I had to pay an ADDITIONAL 20 dollars for what? To quote the receptionist "To see the doctor". It's outrageous to even charge that fee because I needed to return to the doctor to get my results. They were literally holding my test results hostage. Sadly, I had to pay because I didn't have another 3 days to get another test. Go to Dennis Chang, shorter lines, less corrupt, in the same building, and a equally competent doctor for general practice. read more

I'm giving 4 stars because I think Dr. Chan is a great doctor. He knows his stuff, he doesn't rush through the appointment and asks the right questions to give the correct diagnosis. I was with Dr. Chan for quite some time about 4 years ago, then switched to a different HMO all together, and have just recently come back to Dr. Chan and he's still a great doctor. I was a last minute appointment and my experience with the recpetionists were not quite as bad as some of the other reviewers. When I called they said I could come in right away, but warned me I would have to wait, which makes sense. I waited about an hour to be seen, which didn't bother me since I know they have scheduled appointments in place for others already. The receptionist even made small talk with me about my exercise and what I was doing to lose weight. I can see the potential for a typical asian doctor's office to have rude staff, but I didn't experience that today. And, just to be clear, I spoke nothing but English to these people. read more

Doctor Chan is great and patient. My family and I have been with him for couple years, and it is pleasant experience everytime. He is patient and careful, he asked a lot of questions about your situation, noting all the details in your computer files, communicating with you about his diagnosis and treatment options. Staff can be impatient, perhaps it has something to do with the way they talk. Personally, my approach with them is to insist I have to see Dr. Chan or someone will die. read more

Soooo many people and my appointment is in 5 minutes =\ I can understand why the previous reviewers say the reception lady can be rude. However, if you speak to her in Cantonese, or just don't act like an angry/upset patient due to the mass amount of people they pack into that tiny waiting room, things can be more pleasant. Don't expect to be seen at your appointment time. It's a doctor's office, with a ton of Asian patients, expect at least around a 30 minute wait. I waited for about 30 minutes after my appointment to be taken in, and waited about 5 minutes for Dr. Chan. Very friendly man, and this was my first time here. He knew exactly what he was doing, and answered my questions promptly and with confidence. Definitely recommend people to come here. read more

I have a friend who went on a diet, lost some weight and developed a cold, or at least that's what I thought. He went to his family Doctor and was diagnosed with leukemia. Thanks to his family Doctor's keen observation and extra care, he is still with us today. I have been seeing Dr. Chan for more years than I can remember. I have referred many friends to him over the years. Dr. Chan is very knowledgeable and experienced. Most importantly, he cares deeply for his patients. His care is shown in his detailed history taking, thorough explanation to our questions. He and his staff is also highly efficient in setting up tests and referrals when needed. More importantly, due to the heavy volume of patients during office hours, he would often use his own time to call us after work, sometimes as late as 9 pm. It's true we have to wait a bit sometimes but I know he is working hard while we are sitting comfortably in the lobby. I often tell him to not work too hard but that's the way they are. I know many Doctors who realize the importance of their job and have a tendency to overwork. That's why family Doctors are such a valuable asset to the society and deserves our respect. They are the first line of defense when it comes to our health or even survival. The world would be a scary place when Doctors get discouraged and don't care anymore. Just doing ones job maybe good enough for any other profession but it's never good enough for a Doctor. Thank you Dr. Chan, for being relentless in doing your job above and beyond the call of duty. First, I have to say I'm not related to Dr. Chan. I've been his patient for a few years. He came recommended from my relative who himself is a doctor. Dr. Chan's diagnosis is accurate. He is also cautious as well. He takes time to explain to patients the medical diagnosis, treatment and prevention. That is probably why people here complain that they have to wait long to see him. Actually, I found the staff to be ok. They were not rude at all. They were just doing their job. Dr. Chan is a very hard worker. He stays in his office very late into the night. He always returns calls, even during weekend, and is patient listening to his patients. My whole family now is his patient. P.S. Dr Chan is a nice guy, but a nice guy doesn't make a good doctor. My mother was recently transferred out of his care after seeing him for many years. She has multiple comorbidities, all of which is poorly managed. I think there should teamwork in healthcare, and the family doctor should work in tandem with the specialists to monitor the patient's progress. Unfortunately in my mother's case, there was no communication between the clinics to manage her progress. Worse yet, my mother was denied/neglected/ignored by the physician after repeated requests to be referred out to a specialist. Now, I'm not a hypochondriac that needs to be seen by a doctor for every menacing looking discoloration on my body. But what happened here was medically negligent and has caused tremendous, and possibly irreparable, damage. As the patient/family, we also had our share in being responsible for my mother's health management. And it is my regret that we hadn't been diligent enough to transfer out of the clinic sooner rather than later. The physician neglected the patient's progressively worsening biomarkers, failed to implement meaningful intervention that would actually produce positive changes. (Great at pushing paperwork). The office is tiny and the wait is often long. So basically if you're healthy and just need a physician for regular visits, Dr Chan is a pleasant enough guy to hang around. But if you or your family actually needs medical attention, seek elsewhere. read more

The wait time is not good at all... they always overbook. But because they overbook, you can always see the doctor within a couple times, and sometimes even on the same day. I have been a patient of Dr. Chan for several years and would highky recommend him. My dad is a doctor and I have seen many other doctors over the years. What I find exceptional about Dr. Chan is that he explains everything that he is doing and considering when he is examining you. He will tell you he is checking X about you because base on the symptoms you have, there is the possibility of Y. Then he will explain why he ruled out Y and tell you what is is considering next. Having had doctors in the past who just nod and start poking you with no explaination, I find Dr. Chan's transparency very valuable and refreshing. His explainations show he is a very knowledgable and skilled doctor and give me confidence whenever I see him. Five stars! read more

I read all the reviews about dr Chan, most of the reviews are related to nurses/receptionist. Not that I don't believe some negative reviews, I feel sorry for anyone receiving the poor service. I have been to this doctor for 2 years and I never experienced any of those poor service from 2 nurses. Dr Chan has been always so patient. Today, these 2 ladies actually helped me to speak with my health provider for some issues. I am not going to tell any details about what happened, but they helped me resolved the issue and I am very happy. As of long wait time, you will need to avoid Monday's, after long weekends and or Fridays. I had another Asian doctor in Monterey park for many years, wait time was always long. After being a patient for an year, I have to say I like Dr. Chan a lot. He's very courteous, very thorough when he does any check up, very patient, and he really cares about his patients. He give you a lot of tips on stuff you should pay attention to that might trigger any detailed check up. After you get the result of your health exam, Dr. Chan really spend the time and go over every detail of your result. So I have a great health condition to begin with, but unlike other doctors who will simple say "you have a good health, everything's fine," Dr. Chan will go over every number in the diagnostic form, explain to me what "Triglcerides" is, why is it important to keep that number at this range, what "HDL" is, and what the normal range is and why my number is better than others...etc. It's hard to find a doctor that really wants to take the time and explain to you what your results are when you are in good shape--I mean, I want to know why I'm considered "healthy"!! Also I think Dr. Chan just has the personal charm that makes you feel relaxed when you talk to him. :) A lot of people complained about the receptionist ladies in Dr. Chan's office. Either they have changed in the past year, or maybe they like me a lot for some reason (I doubt?), them ladies are usually very friendly to me. Yes they do talk with an accent, maybe that's why a lot of people think they are rude, but so far they are pretty friendly to me. Yes the wait can be a little long, my average wait is around 20~30 minutes. But it's a doctor's office, I've not been to a doctor who doesn't make you wait. Besides, there are always patients waiting in the receptionist area, isn't that a good sign? I'd be worries if I'm going to a doctor with no patients sitting around ever and I get to see the doctor in 1 minute. I'm sorry to have to do this to Dr. Chan but my family and I have been coming here for years and every time there has been a long wait we never minded that because he's always been straight forward and honest with us. Today, I was scheduled for an appointment at 4:45pm, I showed up at 4:56pm (which was my fault-had to take time off work plus traffic) to a locked door. I knocked on the door and ANGELA who has a resting bitch face answered the door with the worst attitude and stated that they were "almost" closed and reluctantly let me in. She then tells me they could not verify my insurance because the insurance company was closed they wanted an $80 deposit and another $30 for my annual physical papers for work. I don't remember them ever charging me before. This is something they should've taken the time to ask BEFORE they scheduled me in for a 4:45pm appointment. Over all I have no complaints for Dr. Chan. I would however, like to complain about his receptionist ANGELA. Because of this he has lost a patient. I refuse to go back just to be treated badly by a receptionist. She obviously doesn't think that Dr. Chan needs any more business. read more

I read these reviews prior to going to Dr Chang for my first time, it was helpful to know what to expect. He's great and his nurses are on top of it. A lot of reviewers on here complained, and all I have to say is, people these days are so petty and take everything so personal. It's all about approach, and understand that this nurse is probably impatient because she is way too busy to deal with "sensitive whiners." This nurse was so busy, she was juggling two phone calls. Dr Chan is a nice doctor. However, the nurses are horrible!!! I took my mom to Dr Chan and later I went back to request for copies of receipts to claim insurance reimbursements (insurance company requires original copies). The description on the receipt says a lot but nothing to do with my mom's condition. It's obviously just a template and insurance company doesn't accept it. The nurse who does insurance billing didn't do her job right and talked with the shitty face and attitude. She didn't update the receipt/invoice, instead, offering me doctor notes with my mom's conditions. However, when I requested for more copies for different insurance companies, the nurse charged me $10! This is insane and I will never go back again!!! read more
