Four of us walked here from our hotel for dinner on a Friday night. We got right in without reservations. We ordered using our phones and their QR menu. The drinks and food were delivered quickly. I loved the cottage pie with herb bread. The pink peppercorns added some spice. The other three shared a huge platter of ribs, steaks, chicken, fries, corn cobs, sauces, etc. We had a banana split, churros with Nutella sauce, pistachio ice cream, and fruity creme brûlée for dessert. I really don't understand the poor/average reviews for this place! Our group was starving after a long fjord cruise and couldn't decide what we wanted for dinner. With everyone wanting something different - Egon met our needs perfectly! All the dishes were great and we could get things ranging from classic American dishes to pasta to a random assortment of European dishes. If you want to satisfy a crowd that struggles with small menus or may not appreciate the "traditional" Norwegian foods. We aren't picky... we just "know what we like"... and we like Egon! read more

This restaurant is fairly large, but broken into smaller rooms that feel cozy and have a romantic vibe. The service was a bit slow, but not terrible. My review of the food is mixed because my wife loved what she had and I thought what I ordered was meh. Starting with my wife, she had a draft beer (good) and the Braised Beef Brisket with carrots, mushrooms, and broccolini, topped with fried crispy onions and a birria sauce. It was served with a side of mashed potatoes. She said it was one of the best beef briskets she has had, and she has had many beef briskets! So that was high praise indeed. I had the Wok Chicken and Tempura Scampi, wok vegetables, served on rice with a peanut/mango sauce, which I thought sounded great. Unfortunately, the tempura was not at all crispy or light, which is the whole point of tempura. The chicken and the shrimp were not flavorful and it was served on plain white rice. The vegetables did not seem wok fried and instead were steamed veggies (or so it seemed to me). All in all, it was one of those dishes that looked good on paper, but not so much in reality. read more

This was a nice place to stop and have an afternoon bite after exploring Bryggen and the cable car up the mountain. We sat on the patio which has heaters and blankets for those chilly days. You order food and drinks at the bar and they bring them to your table, which was fine but I would have preferred table service. We got the fish soup, broccoli and garlic bread and it was great. Pricey but that's Norway for ya. Took off a couple of stars for no table service and long wait time for food to be delivered. The view and setting make up for it. read more

Great place for a meal and a beer. We had lunch inside on a chilly and rainy day. Inside was warm and inviting. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a thickened style fish stew with cod and salmon. It could have used some additional seasoning. This was a second visit for me and I would certainly return. We were seated after 10 minutes on a busy evening by a very polite and calm hostess. Kudos to her! She gave us menus and explained the process of ordering food and drinks at the bar. We ordered and our food was brought out in 15 minutes-not too bad considering the volume of orders they must have. My fried chicken sandwich was very good but a bit messy to eat as the avocado and sauce made for a sticky combo. Hubby had onion rings and fish soup with bread which he enjoyed. We stumbled across this lovely outdoor restaurant & loved the food so much we ate lunch each day in lovely sunshine. The servers were very helpful. My husband fell in love with the seafood stew/soup. Staff was great and so patient with our huge party (5 kids under 7, grandpa and 4 adults), food was decent (I think only one Norwegian dish? Bummer but with 5 kids we were looking for easy). There's a kids room in the back and they put us away from everyone in a back room which was fantastic. If you have small kids, DEFINITELY worth it. I got to have TWO drinks. read more

'Ello chaps! Egon is a Norwegian restaurant concept that first opened in Oslo in 1984. Since then it's expanded across the country. There is MUCH to love about the Egon restaurants, of which we visited several across Norway multiple times. The ambience is unique and not a typical restaurant. The menu is large and everyone in your party is guaranteed to find something. Burgers, chicken sandwich, steak, salad, pizza, vegetarian options. Everyone will find something. I also love the operation of Egon (and most restaurants in Norway) as it's more efficient than restaurants in other places, such as the United States. Here's how it works: You get seated at a marked table with menus. Take your time looking over the menus. When you're ready, order at the bar. Tell them your table number and what you'd like. You pay right then and there. Food comes out in a short bit - delicious! - and enjoy. When you're all set and ready to go --- GO! Love the efficiency, the food, the ambience, and compared to currency standards in Norway, it's a good value. Overall I give Egon restaurants 5 stars out of 5. TIP: Especially for American diners, soft drinks/soda will be a bit more expensive than at home and NO FREE REFILLS. Also, be sure to ask for tap water if that's what you'd like (and ice too. They're happy to give it to ya if you ask). Tap water in Norway is DELICIOUS. Better quality than bottled water. read more

My friends who had been to Bergen before had told me to stop here at Egon for lunch because of the pizza buffet. With the price of food in Norway, any type of buffet seems like a lifesaver since you definitely earn your money. So I did was I was told because who wants to blow all their money on not-so-great food? So I ordered the buffet and a Coke Zero (big mistake). I got the total and it was around 174 Norwegian Kroner or 22 bucks. So the buffet was $14 which wasn't bad, but the soda was $7.50 with no refills. Lessened learned- do not buy soda at a restaurant, always water. The buffet was super small. Two pizzas out at time with multiple flavors on one pie. A salad was next to it with two dressings. The one was some type of mango which I didn't like, but the garlic ranch was amazing, especially with the pizza. Remember, this isn't America where you need 12 pizzas lined up. No one was complaining about the size of things here. You took what was there or you waited. The pizza was pretty decent. I liked the crust and the flavoring and was surprised to see some pineapple on the pizza too. I had my pizza, sat for a moment, and had some more before leaving. I was earning my keep there for sure. End of the day I'd go again in a minute, but I'd either find cheaper soda elsewhere or just drink water. read more

This location of Egon has probably one of the best locations around given it is right by the harbor and across from the Fish Market. They have a large outside seating area and cater to the tourists with menus that are in a wide variety of languages. Sort of a cross between your corner pub and a TGI Fridays, you find a table, grab a menu and then place your order at the bar. The line to order may be long, but the food actually comes up rather quickly. We were greeted by a great guy, Jasper (sp?) who quickly found us some menus in English. He stopped by later to clear our table and was just so personable and welcoming he deserves a shout out! He's new to Norway (from Sweden) but as the "face" of this chain restaurant to us - he made our evening!! The menu is huge and varied- everything from steaks to bar food to pastas to salads. I had the chicken stir fry which was surprisingly good while others at our table had the lasagna, the baked potato and the spaghetti carbonara. All was warm and tasty and a nice change from all of the herring we've had over the past couple of weeks in Scandinavia!! Prices were also reasonable. It's not fancy and the food is never going to win any culinary awards, but for decent food at a reasonable price in a great location, Egon takes the prize! read more

We did not have the best experience here. It was too crowded, the waiter was pretty slow and he was not attentive to our table. Didn't realize this was a chain restaurant until we saw signs for the other Egon in Bergen. Whoops. Stumbled in during a rain storm and decided to wait out the rain with beer and food. Menu was varied with American, Italian, Mexican and a little Scandinavian. Beer was surprisingly expensive. But 4 beers later, hubby wasn't really concerned about price. Atmosphere was cozy especially during the rain which never stopped. Liked the candle on the table. Food was not great but it was fine given the circumstances. read more
