Ok. Any experienced taco lovers knows when they first walk into a place if it's going to be the real deal. When I crossed thr threshold into El Agave, I felt immediately the presence of deliciousness. This place is legit. It's not all fancy schmancy and it isn't trying to be. But it's a clean, nice place where the food speaks for itself. I had the been dip, one beef soft taco, some refried beans, some chorizo tacos, some horchata and the flan. Everything was delicious....particularly the chorizo tacos and the flan. Very good stuff. Prices are low, portions are big, and the food is simple but we'll executed. I'd definitely come back here if I were in the area again, and I may just drive out of my way to get those chorizo tacos again. Great stuff. read more

This is the 3rd time I have been to this restaurant. I am still disappointed and this time I wont be back. Service was slow, the place was empty besides two other tables. Salsa was way too salty. I just wanted basic 3 carne tacos on corn tortillas with cilantro and onions and hot salsa. That wasn't the option I was given and what I received was incredibly disappointing. My brother had a simple carne asada torta. I ordered a michelada that was mostly tomato juice, and my brother ordered a top shelf margarita that tasted like old Jose Cuervo and pineapple juice. I don't think the menu here is up to date. Menu #56 is Molcajete which is what I got. Authentic Mexican. Beef was tough but tasty. I enjoyed it because I like to try new things; it was prepared correctly, but I didn't care for the flavor. Everyone else got the usual Mexican food which was fine. I like thinner corn chips personally. The kids enjoyed the Horchata which is a sweet Mexican milk drink with cinnamon. Our waitress was hard working and courteous, but missed a few things and didn't speak English. It wasn't a huge deal and she was obviously trying to please. We went on Sunday noonish; very crowded. Waited 10minutes for table for 5 adults; 2 kids; 1 baby so not bad. Ambience was simple; not fancy but clean. I'll go back and try more menu items in the future. read more

I've ate here numerous times. It seems however, that this place is on a steady decline. The chips have been stale on numerous occasions, the staff is slow and unkind even when it was basically empty! Overpriced, poorly tended, unauthentic, and not something I'd recommend to anyone. UPDATE : I decided to come back again to see if the quality had changed. I ordered two drinks, a raspberry margarita frozen and a mango margarita on the rocks. The rims come salted, but it seems like they salted the entire drink. It was too salty to even drink so I told my waiter (possibly the owner) that it was really salty. He insisted that I pay for it, not even an offer of a remake. Food and service was terrible . Soft drink was terrible with no carbonation . When I mentioned this to waiter - possibly owner he insisted nothing was wrong with it and it tasted fine and his machine was working perfectly . Argue with me and told me I should come to back and check it . I was very disappointed with overall experience and will not be back . So there are several Mexican restaurants in the area that really aren't worth mentioning. The food they serve is acceptable and that's about it. El Agave serves food that is exceptional. Whether you want a gringo special or something authentic they have got you covered and it is delicious! I've been going there since they opened they're awesome. I honestly never gave this place a second glance when we first moved to Clanton but boy I'm glad I tried it! I ordered the fajita steak quesadillas. I'm picky so I didn't get onions or peppers and they didn't mind it at all. You get 2 quesadillas and they were AMAZING! I even took one home and ate it the next day and it was still just as good! The service was amazing even though my kids like to be rowdy! Cheese dip was amazing as well as the salsa. The rice is a favorite too! This is my family's new favorite spot! I went to another Mexican restaurant that we favored before because I was in Montgomery and ordered the same thing and only got one quesadilla and it was mediocre. read more

We were driving home from vacation and were really craving Mexican food. This was a little ways off the interstate, but well worth the extra 5 minutes of driving. The tamales are huge and really good. We also loved the pollo loco and fajitas! Definitely recommend this place! And don't forget to get the horchata!! read more
