Service is outstanding. The buffet,in my opinion,is small. But the food is fresh and delicious. Price is fair.

I recently stopped by Shoney's in Clanton, Alabama and had a mixed experience overall. I ordered the baked spaghetti, chicken tenders, a garden salad, and bread. The baked spaghetti was very good, well baked with plenty of flavor and the fried chicken tenders were also tasty and cooked just right. The bread was perfect: warm, soft, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. Unfortunately, the garden salad didn't live up to the rest of the food. The vegetables tasted like they had been sitting mixed together for a while, almost as if they'd been combined days earlier, so the individual flavors were hard to distinguish. The staff were pleasant and polite, though the service felt a little low-energy. On the positive side, the price was decent and fair for the amount of food. Overall, some items were definitely enjoyable, especially the baked spaghetti, chicken tenders, and bread, but the salad and slightly bland service kept the experience from being outstanding. read more

Well I have tried to not put negative reviews. I've tried to keep my criticism constructive but I am at a loss on this one. I can say the service was good. We did the breakfast buffet and sat next to the buffet. I got a broccoli salad to start and it was rancid. I then proceeded to the buffet where a worker was filling up the link sausage bin and spilled maybe 15 or 20 on the counter where people stand to make their plate. She picked them off the counter and put them back in with the others. When I asked her about it bahe said it was restraunt policy that if I human touches it put it back. WOW. I put my plate up and sat down. She then proceeds to start sweeping behind us. When she was done she put the broom in the corner and walked to kitchen counter and picked up a tray of chicken fingers and went to place them on the buffet. She didn't wash her hands then or after. No gloves were ever used. Then waiting on my husband to finish the salad worker came out and place all fresh fixings ON TOP of the existing lettuce. That explains the rancid broccoli salad because they obviously are rotating stock. I try to find something good everywhere I visit and review. The people were nice. read more

Okay Shoney's! Yelp! I see you. We made an early morning trip up I 65 South and lo and behold, Bae spotted it, SHONEY'S! When I say a flash from the past, you are still as we remember. Upon entry, we were greeted by their designated sweet hostess lady. Either, we look hungry, or like we were there for the bar, cause she didn't disappoint, she sat us just steps from the bar. Our sweet server was Brittany. She is attentive and on top of her craft. Thanks for your service girl. Let's get on to the real reason we here, THIS BAR! Everything looks fresh and stocked up. Then, the guy on bar duty is acting like the old high school lunchroom lady. He barking out orders reminding everybody, "the breakfast on this side we bout to change for lunch" hollering. Boy, it ain't even 10:00 am, stop all that carrying on. Note the stars. Hush. Okay, I'm back. Bae and I got eggs, bacon and sausage,. He got French toast sticks and I got a pancake. I also got grits and made a self served grit bowl out of my grits, meat and cheese, Yum. We were full from the first bar run. Shoney's you are the spot for a delicious Sunday breakfast. WOW has this place gone downhill over the last couple of years. Last time I was here the food was just OK not like it used to be by a long shot. Went there tonight and HORRIBLE! Two people $40 wasted. Yes I told them. I would highly recommend NOT stopping here if food is important to you. The hamburger patties were Tough, over cooked and chewed like chewing gum. Fish was equally horrible. I love pea salad but after eating theirs tonight- yuck. We stopped on the way home at dinner time and the empty parking lot should have been a red flag. If you are traveling and hungry do yourself and your pocketbook a huge favor and skip this exit. When I say horrible, I mean HORRIBLE and if anyone looks at the reviews I give this is not my normal. Our server was a sweet gal but kept having to apologize for having to cook in the kitchen while she also served tables. There are some great issues at this Shoney's and that is sad given that I used to really love eating there. Downhill is all I can say. My stomach is actually upset as I type these words and trust me when I say I have a iron stomach and seldom if ever get stomach pains. My family and I visited the Clanton location on Christmas Day. We were a little worried when we pulled in because they were packed. We had nothing to worry about. We were seated right away. Their crowd control was awesome. Everyone was wearing Covid precautions. Our waitress was wonderful. Plates were taken away promptly and our glasses never got even an inch low. Our timing was perfect. The breakfast bar was out for 15 minutes and then they transitioned over to Christmas lunch. There was a good bit of variety on each bar. The food was hot and delicious. The place was spotless. If you haven't been to Shoney's lately go give them a visit. read more

We have been to this location multiple times with no issues. However, today my husband took the grandboys to Shoney's for breakfast. He ordered coffee for himself and two buffets for the boys. There is no discount for seniors or for children!! So the cost was really high for 2 children under 10. My grands are 8 and 9. He went up to the buffet to help them get there food and as he was helping them the waitress (a middle aged African American woman, heavy set) asked him "oh did you decide to take the buffet". He said no, just helping the boys. Moments later, the boys returned and she again asked, if he decided to take the Buffett and again he said no. They returned to the table and my husband took a tums out of his pocket and put it in his mouth (the reason he wasn't eating - stomach issues) and she rushed the table asking again- "did you decide to take the buffet? I see your chewing something" at this point my husband almost made a scene, but instead he swallowed his tums and politely said. I've told you 3 times, I am not taking the buffet. He paid the bill and left! We won't be returning without an apology! To be badgered over and over and watched like a hawk is inappropriate. Shoney's - Clanton is conveniently located off I-65, Shoney's is open early and late for those looking for comfort food. We are here often for their Saturday morning breakfast bar and Steak and Seafood Bar on Friday and Saturday night. Things They Do Well: - Friday and Saturday night is steak and seafood - Sunday brunch has both breakfast and lunch items - They have a good selection of comfort food on both the menu and the hot /cold bar. - Shoney's is not crowded and they offer meals at a reasonable cost - Easy access off I-65 - Although I haven't had it in years, the Strawberry pie to-go is a classic Challenges: - The lettuce, mushroom, carrots could be fresher on the bar. - It may be cold - in the main restaurant or the back-meeting room. This was a total and complete blast from the past. I was operating under the assumption that Shoney's was long gone ages ago. I am originally from the Kansas City metro and I have not seen a Shoney's since childhood, so you can imagine my surprise seeing one of their signs while blasting down the interstate. The menu is pretty much unchanged for the most part, with the noticeable addition of many more artisan themed entrees. The old school bear is still the mascot, and the huge buffet that I remember so well is still a thing. Glad to see these places still have a foothold down South. read more

Not so great... Our waitress was the most delightful thing about our experience. Bob had suggested we come to Shoney's as it was his favorite breakfast place. We got drinks which tasted great. We got to the buffet and it was all pretty neat. Many of the tools were misplaced. The food looked pretty good. We got the food and sat down. It wasn't as good as it looked. Bob loved it so much. But it didn't taste fresh at all. The pancakes were dry but the apples were good on top. And I got grits with cheese sauce and bacon. The bacon was too chunky. The cheese sauce and the grits were watered down and not flavorful. It's like eating air. I didn't like it but Bob loved it. Wouldn't suggest it to anyone though. read more

Went here on Sunday with my elderly dad. Was surprised it was buffet only for breakfast. Buffet was basic and full and hot. Our waitress was busy busy running her butt off but made sure we had full coffee and diet coke and dirty plates taken away. Around 1015-1030 they cut the buffet down to get ready for the lunch buffet. That was odd to me. Dad was a tad miffed by it as he eats slow. Takes him 20-30 minutes to clear a small plate. My husband is a huge fan of this place!! This location has become a mandatory place to stop and eat every time we are on a road trip passing through this way. Everyone is so patient, friendly and welcoming during every visit. We always come for the Breakfast Buffet. I'm obsessed with sugar free things right now, for dieting. I couldn't believe they have sugar free syrup available right at the buffet,lol!! I was so excited to see this. My daughter only gets the sausage patty's with syrup on the side to dip them in. This was a very disappointing stop in Clanton during a recent visit. We had 5 in our party. First, the service was ridiculously slow, and the music way too loud. I had the grilled salmon, steamed veggies and rice pilaf. The ssalmon was nicely seasoned, but so overdone the texture was tough. The steamed veggies were excellent and seasoned well, but the rice pilaf was far too bland. Two of our guests had food so overdone it had to be refused and sent back. Not a good meal in any way. As a chain, Shoney's was a favorite of mine when I was a child. Unfortunately, they have followed many other chains in the habit of relying on their buffet to the exclusion of the casual diner. They still offer menu service, but the service is not fast if you go that route. If an entire family orders the buffet, it can be very expensive. I used to enjoy the weekend brunch, but a $50 ticket for 5 people to eat breakfast is more than most people will accept. If you still enjoy Shoney's as a chain, this is a good example of it. The food is edible and the fruit/salad bar is well stocked. It's not my first choice, but I will go if invited. read more

Servers were very sweet and friendly. We had the breakfast buffet and added a 4 oz steak for .99¢ . Steak was tender and done perfectly. The salad and breakfast bar was clean and well stocked.
