Great service! Our waitress was hustling for every table, which is something you don't usually see. I ordered a water with lemon to start. The water had great ice but tasted like dishwater, but I added four lemons to make it taste okay. There was a big selection on the menu. I had BBQ yesterday, so I was looking for something besides a pulled pork sandwich. I was recommended the catfish because I was told it was served fresh. I asked, and it turned out the catfish was frozen, but I still had my mind set on it. I ordered the two-piece catfish platter with baked beans and onion rings. The food came out quickly, even on a busy day. The catfish pieces were big, and the baked beans were a good portion. I got my catfish fried, and they tasted as good as frozen catfish can. A few bites were extremely fishy, but they still had a nice crunch. The onion rings and baked beans were decent. The beans were served with pulled pork, which was a nice touch. I had to end lunch with a slice of key lime pie. The pie was small for being $5, but it was the best thing I had. It tasted exactly how you want key lime pie to taste. They provided the check near the end of the meal and you pay up front. Good for those who do not like to wait for the check to leave. Overall, great Southern vibe and a great experience. read more

I'm having trouble deciding where to rate this place. We stopped through on the way across the county. The building appears to be quite a bit old but still has been maintained. The service inside was very adequate and everyone was very friendly. They do have crab claws on the menu, and I asked the waitress about more information about them. She said she would go check and returned with two for me to try, which I found to be a nice gesture. She also kept our drinks filled and checked on us regularly. The claws were delicious and come to find out they were deep fried, which were delicious. I did not order them but instead ordered the smoked chicken dinner with cole slaw and tator tots. My wife ordered the rib plate. My chicken was cooked perfectly. It was moist inside, and the outside was perfectly crisp. However, it didn't taste like it had any seasoning at all on it. I could taste the smoke flavor some, but I felt it needed more than that. My wifes ribs were overcooked and a little rubbery at the ends and also lacked seasoning. I'm sure we could have sent them back to get fresher ones, but we didn't ask. I know our waitress would have happily switched them out. Like I said, I had a tough time reviewing this as I know you can just catch a place on a bad day. This was my review for this particular time we stopped through. read more

The ribs tasted and looked boiled, but yet were rubbery on the edges. My husband's chicken was cooked great, but there was no seasoning to be found. The restrooms were absolutely dirty. My husband and I both feel that if an area of the restaurant that the public can see is that dirty, how does back of the house (kitchen) look. I will say the our waitress did a good job. The place feels cozy and like your favorite aunt and uncles place. We are new to this restaurant - but we certainly will be back soon. They have what they called "Hot Hamburger" which is a hamburger steak on 1/2 a bun with mushrooms, cheese, brown gravy and sautéed onions. It is shown attached. The brown gravy is very savory and the hamburger melts in your mouth. Served with a side, we chose sweet potato French fries that were large meaty French fries. They were also awesome. We also ordered the crab claws. Which are shown- as a half order. These were unique, they pull the small claw from the crab and deep fried the meet. You pick it up from the claw and oh my! These were amazing! These are sold alone, but you can pay extra for any side you may want. The steaks were super reasonable and we heard they were super tender, juicy and again really good! We had a wonderful experience at Hickory Chip! Our party of 4 had onion straws and crab claws, catfish, BBQ, and the hamburger steak, all the way. My favorites were the fried okra, catfish, and the crab claws. OMG, the crab claws!! The pork BBQ and baked beans were also great. I will mention that the potato salad was "mustard-forward" and the hush puppies were just a smidge dark/overcooked. Overall, we were very happy with food and service. The place was full at 5:30 on a random Wednesday night so they are definitely doing something right! I didn't take any pictures of food but did get a shot of the menu. So we are finding that the further off the beaten path the BBQ joint is the more legit they tend to be. Something that stood our really quickly - we arrived at about 3:00 or 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon and this place had a significant number of cars in the parking lot ---- that's always a good sign when they are busy at off peak times. No exception for Hickory Chip, in my opinion. They don't have an expansive menu, but they do have some unique items on it - such as the onion rings and fried jalapeno sticks (Texas Toothpicks) - this was a really great combination and went well with my order the Sassy Sausage. The sausage had good bold smoke flavor and was cooked perfectly. It is on the salty side, so if you don't like something overly salty, I would pass on this. My wife had the ribs, and they were fall of the bone goodness! Staff was friendly and checked on us frequently. They helped us with ordering and kept our drinks full. One other thing, this is the classic definition of a dive ..... this isn't a fancy joint, come as casual as you want ... Add this to your list of places to try, it's worth the trip! read more

Stopped in to this place to give it a shot because the parking lot was totally packed which is usually a good indicator that the food might be pretty good. And it was pretty good. Not great, but good enough for the price. The building seems really old and rustic, and decorated with so much stuff on the walls that it could be overwhelming to take it all in. It's as though they've taken a minimalist concept amd thrown it out the window in favor of filling the walls with all sort of memorabilia from who knows where. Anyway, I had a pork plate which was your standard fare. Not bad, but not great in and of itself. The place was very, very busy but they did a good job of keeping the glasses full and handling the volume with good, friendly service. Why 4 stars instead of 3? I'll tell you why. The cake. There's a lady here who's been baking these cakes for a very long time and she's gotten very good at it. It's not often that I bite into something that really makes me pause and think about how truly amazing it is. This cake blew my mind. I literally bought a slice of each kind to go and left with a huge bag of cake. Incredible stuff. So overall a decent place to stop and fill up, a little rustic, might be really busy. Burgers, steaks, bbq, and a lot of fried sides....and that cake. Seriously, if you pass this place at least go in and get the cake. I'll put this stuff up against anything I've ever had anywhere. The smell outside the building is incredible, which is sadly just a ruse because the ribs seemed like they were boiled. *Everything* was bland and unseasoned. The cole slaw was pureed for some reason and had the texture of baby food. I could drink it through a straw, in fact. The okra was cold and mushy and didn't taste homemade. The bbq sauce and the texas toast were the best things i ate. It took us an hour to get our food, and the wifi network was down which meant the only thing to do was stare at the dusty, tacky decor. This is a charming little place that has an atmospheric feel that is endemic to its area. I came to the restaurant off a recommendation, if I were in the mood for steak. I am glad to have followed that recommendation. I was greeted kindly with a smiling face and given a choice of where to sit. I ordered the 16oz ribeye with a baked potato and a side salad. The side salad was eh... lettuce, onion and tomato, nothing to brag about.. But the steak!! Whoa.. It was juicy, tender, seasoned well and cooked to perfection. Can't recommend this place until Covid is under control. Half the staff had their noses sticking out of their mask. Some even had their mask below their mouth. The lady at the register didn't have a mask at all. They have a sign encouraging masks but most people aren't wearing them and it seemed like every two seconds someone was openly coughing into the air. I'll consider myself lucky not to get Covid after eating here. I'm hoping that Clanton is podunk enough that Covid just hasn't made it there yet. Fingers crossed! read more

Good ole home town greasy spoon restaurant! Dined here last night and the service was top notch. My husband had the 12 ribeye and I quote, "it's fire!" He always has the club which is his favorite there but he was super hungry tonight so he had both. I had a patty melt. It tasted just like one my grandmother would make. Food tasted as if it was not made to order, the hamburgers were dry and over cooked. But thank god for that gravy! You could put that stuff on a leather boot and it would still be good. The sweet potato fries that they dump from the bag into the deep fryer were cooked perfectly. The ribs that they boiled and served sans sauce were...boiled. The lettuce on the salad was fresh. Not really worthy of a post. However, here goes. As we entered the restaurant, this is still a smoking and non-smoking area type of restaurant. I wasn't aware those still existed. We smelled the tobacco smoke immediately and asked for a non-smoking table. We had to walk through the smoking section to get to our table. The food was mediocre and the atmosphere rustically charming but certainly done in shabby shiek as we expected for a "country cooking" type of establishment. Will we return again? That would be highly unlikely. We both hate trying to eat surrounded by tobacco smoke. Yes, even in the non-smoking section the smoke seemed somehow to take it's place. Finally, we finished our dinner but took the smell of tobacco smoke with us as it had been absorbed into our clothing. The steaks are good and potatoes are large. I've never had a bad meal, though occasionally the service can be slow. They have both smoking and non-smoking sections, but you have to pay in the smoking section, so if you are sensitive to it, be aware. You can tell that this place is a favorite of the locals! I ordered the catfish and the rest of the group ordered steak. The restaurant is a BBQ place but everywhere I looked I saw Ribeye. Seasoned and cooked perfectly! My catfish was breaded in cornmeal and served hot. The only issue keeping this review from 5 stars was one family in our group receiving their meals five minutes before the other family despite ordering together. As a result my wife's steak was lukewarm while my catfish was piping hot. Still this place is well worth a quick drive off I65 in Clanton. An EXCELLENT, friendly, feel good place! read more

We loved it!! The food is great and prices were lower than expected. Service was better than what you would get at a big chain sit down restaurant and you get to eat in peace due to no cell service.
