We tried this place while driving to North Carolina. We were seated right away and service was good. We ordered the guacamole but didn't know it wasn't fresh so we had to order their Texas guacamole, which the guy said was fresh. But it looked and tasted like the same guacamole but with added pico de gallo. It wasn't fresh avocados though, which I was expecting. We also tried their chicken fajita and steak Coronado. This unassuming food stop is in a quaint little town that provides an opportunity for a short after meal walk. We were there for a lunch midweek, so it wasn't very busy when we were there. So service was great. Now onto to star of the show, the food. It was delicious, fresh and VERY reasonably priced. My daughter enjoyed her fish tacos and was more than enough to even take some home! I got the lunch special of burrito and chalupa. It was the perfect amount of food for me, so no leftovers. We are from out of town and will be back in town in a year for a wedding so we will be enjoying at least one more meal then! read more

We were enroute to our stop for the night in Santee and decided to stop in Florence for dinner at El Agave, so glad we did. My husband ordered a dos equiz which was ice cold and a generous pour. We order a couple of entrees, he ordered combination platter anc I got the chicken/steak fajitas. Both were generous and delicious! Only surprise was that his dish came with rice OR beans not both. We enjoyed everything , service was great. Our table wasn't in the prettiest spot but didn't deter from the attention and service. We will be back! read more

I didn't even think Mexican food could be this bad. I had the #15 combination platter and everything was a soft mushy mess! You couldn't tell tostada from the Chalupa, the tortillas were literally disintegrating into a mushy paste. Nothing was warm when delivered. My daughter had a burrito enchilada and taco and she couldn't tell the difference between the enchilada and burrito, she said her taco was both greasy and dry. Very unappealing. The only reason I gave it two stars is because it was lovely to be sitting outside, the guacamole was really good and our waiter was very nice. While, he wasn't all that attentive when he was there he was quite entertaining. read more

Perhaps I've been spoiled by the incredible Mexican food back in California. Unfortunately, at least half of the steak was too tough to eat (see photo showing the inedible portion). The shrimp was heavily over-seasoned and also inedible, while the beans and rice tasted like prepackaged bulk items--possibly from Costco. read more

Our order was missing 2 items of chips and cheese. That means we were shorted $10.00. The salad was very bland. They need to add cucumbers, onions, and more cheese. One of the quesadillas was only cheese inside instead of chicken and cheese. It was flatter than a pancake. Please teach your workers to double check everything. read more

This restaurant is downtown Florence across street from Victor's. One positive about downtown Flo is the large public parking lot one block over from Main St. This was so highly rated on Yelp had to check it out. The building is more long than it is wide so it's a narrow corridor w tables lined all the way down. In the front there is a little larger dining area. The waiting lobby is basically the door or outside. Speaking of outside the are about 5 tables right on Main. Wife got strong peach margarita; our entrees were shrimp and pork burritos. The pork was high grade not that fake meat from your San Jose chain. Both of our meals were delicious and price still didn't break the bank. May have discovered new favorite Mexican restaurant in Florence. read more

We picked up takeout from El Agave on a Sunday evening. Food was good, generous portions on the combination dinners and a nice supply of chips and salsa. My only warning about the place is to check the prices, the menu online was 25% cheaper than the order online option, so we called in our order only to pay an even higher price due to some added ToGo charges. Traveling and my wife and I and two grandchildren stopped in. The service was very good. Polite, attentive and friendly. The location was on the street outside and open, only a little trash here and there. The food was a five at best, sorry. Lucky we are traveling and won't be back. My wife is from New Mexico, and is a great cook.. this said we know exactly what great Mexican food tastes like. We were greeted and seated promptly. Abet it was 4.30p. After being seated, we were given chips and salsa. The chips were good and the salsa was good. We asked our waitress if they had spicier salsas.. and the waitress returned with two different salsas. An avocado based and Chipotle based. My wife loved the avocado salsa, and I really liked the Chipotle based. My wife ordered the chili relleno and taco combo, and I ordered the chili colorado combo (combo is rice and beans). Oh.. we also ordered the guacamole as an appetizer. Everything was on point..! Guacamole tasted great, taco / chili relleno (red sauce was very good) were very good. My chili colorado, was cooked just the way we both like. Beans and rice were good also. My margarita, was a little on the sweet side, but I normally get a cadillac, which defuses some of the sweetness. All in all, if you're looking for great Mexican food you will not be disappointed. Picked up carry out and got exactly as I ordered. I just wasn't very impressed. Guacamole tasted and looked like it was processed (like from a Tostitos jar - definitely not freshly made. When we arrived we were ignored by the first three or four staff members. No smiles, no acknowledgement, not even eye contact. There was no hostess in sight. The food is the standard fare in any Mexican restaurant. Nothing special. When a waitress came with more salsa she smacked it down and scooped up the empty bowl like she was feeding cattle. Again, no smiles, no acknowledgement. Our waiter, though, asked us how we were doing so often it was annoying. Cold air blew us throughout the meal as we gazed at garage-sale-worthy art of scenes of village life in what I assume was meant to be Mexico. We have no intention of ever stopping in Florence again but if we do we'll skip this place unless our hankering for canned enchilada sauce is particularly powerful. read more

Food was delish as always. Went for the #13 (chicken quesadilla/chili relleno/beans) this time. House Margarita on the rocks (yummy) and it was Sunday - they have the crispiest tortilla chips and bring you 3 different salsas. The waitstaff are always very friendly and the food comes out quickly. They have a pretty extensive menu and some specialties that you won't find elsewhere. I have been to El Agave four times. I have not been been disappointed. The service is always friendly and fast. The beer is always served super cold in a big frozen mug. The shrimp fajita arrives sizzling hot. It's big, delicious, and comes with all the fresh "fixings" on the side that you expect for a platter of fajitas. I love to sit outside on the patio right on Main Street in Florence. If you are in Florence and looking for good Mexican food, I don't think you can go wrong by choosing El Agave. read more

Could easily get to four stars by addressing a few issues. 1. Food: Overall, the food was tasty (one exception below). Chips came out right away with two salsa options, and when we asked for hotter, they had some rocket fuel ready to go (ended up mixing the super hot with the medium - it was good). We had carne asada fajitas and pollo tapatio. The steak was seasoned well, but the fixins plate came out too late - almost half way through eating the meat and veggies, which was unfortunate and surprising, given how easy that side plate is to prep. The chicken plate was so good: chorizo and bacon together, which is kind of magical, and made great tacos with the salsas. Unfortunately, churro dessert was a downer at the end. We grew up eating fresh churros, and these looked like a re-heat. 2. Drink: drinks came out fast and weren't light pours (both appreciated), and tasted great. Oddly, the last margarita was just mix/no tequila, so we asked for a new one and it disappeared into the back - a new one never emerged. 2. People: very friendly, but the service was mixed (see above for delays and disappearing drink). Aside from ordering and food arriving, staff rarely checked in on the table. 3. Space: lively, with inside and outside seating. Some cool dia de los meurtos art. We'd go again. read more

I ordered the veggie fajitas and after I finished eating my mouth was so dry, and no matter how much I drank, the dryness would not go away.
