We make the drive from St Louis to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and back at least two times each year. We keep experimenting with where to stop over night when coming back to St Louis. This time we pushed it as far as Winchester and that seems about right. The next step was to find a Mexican restaurant that we will return to assuming this is our stopping point. On this first stop, it was Sunday evening and most places were closed, so it kind of became El Camino Real by default. It was actually pretty good and I think this will likely be our place. Ms T had her usual Taco Salad and that is not really a great item from which to judge a restaurant, but that's what she likes. She was happy with it though. They are fine if the meat is seasoned some and this was. I ordered fish tacos and these were quite good. They were served in corn tortillas, lightly fried. That is all a plus. The fish was grilled, so no heavy batter. I liked that they had cabbage as the garnish and that they had some dressing. I would certainly order these again. Nice job. We might try some other places in Winchester, but this will do just fine for our brief visits. read more

No complaints whatsoever at this place! We were seated immediately and the man who waited on us was super nice and outgoing! We recieved our food in no time, and not one bad word was said by my family about the food, and we are all critics of good food. I ordered a steak quesodilla with queso on top, and while the queso was a little spicy, it wasn't too spicy, it was just right. We will definitely be frequenting this place from here on out. They have a very extensive menu. I chose the seafood nachos. Yummy, lots of shrimp, fish, fake crab and scallops. Lots of grilled onions and peppers. I asked for guacamole on top and it also came with sour cream and lots of cheese. Hubby ordered his usual steak quesadilla There was a sauce on it that he wasn't too keen on but said it was good. I love this place and get to go orders 1 or 2 times a week and frequent this place often. But yesterday there is one waiter there that I can almost swear that he hates me. He never talks while seating or anything. Poor service and no chips. He is friendly to everyone else. He usually passes me off to another waiter. I did nothing to this guy. This place was terrible. Our waitress left right after she delivered our food. So we had no one to tell that the family grill combo was inedible due to the rancid oil they cooked it all in. The entire visit was ridiculous from not having silverware nor drinks. To not having anyone take our order. To having two different people "helping" us. Only one lady was super helpful and nice. She was like the grandma of the group. I complained in both languages to the other waitress who came over to give us our ticket and then another man. He said there was nothing he could do as our waitress had left. He also said if we would have sent the food back right when we got it, then he would have no problem taking the meal off of our ticket. I kindly explained that " since she left as you know right after delivering the food there really was not much we could do!" He then asked me to come back later after running my card for the full amount ( oh yeah he bartered with me to take my food off the ticket which was $10 cheaper than the family grill combo) and he "couldn't do anything about that!" So I said no and waited for the manager to come back. Who then ran my card for the appropriate amount but at the end of the day the food was terrible and the service more so. Please do not come here. We had a better meal at the big boys around the corner the next day. Which is why I'm writing this review. That was a complete waste of money when there are better food options nearby. read more

I've eaten here several times and the food and the service are good but the reason I only have them 2 stars is due to the cleanliness of the place. When I arrived I went to the restroom and there was no hand soap. That's no big deal I thought because everybody runs out sooner or later. I told our waiter that there was none in the bathroom and after we ate and was paying for our meal I asked if they had replaced the soap. And in shock he started laughing and said no that they hadn't. So I asked if a manager was there and he called me over to speak with him and I told him what had happened and in amazement he had called over to the guy that was cashing me out and asked him why he was laughing and why he told me that. Let's go in order how our dinner went: first we were seated, then our drink order was taken, server brought out drinks, 5 minutes later chips and salsa bought out. 10 minutes later server took our order, 5 minutes later he bought out our rice, refried beans, guacamole, ect. 15 minutes later he bought our fajitas. 30 minutes later I asked for a box. Usually when u ask for a box it means u are ready to go. 10 minutes later we finely had to just get up and leave. Before we got to the cash register our server ran us down and gave us our check. Local of Winchester here! I can tell you Winchester doesn't have a great many options of sit down restaurants, but it does have a number of Mexican restaurants. This is the only one worth stopping at in my opinion. The chips and salsa here are addictive, your food always comes out hot and tasty in about 10 minutes, and the staff is always there to greet you with a smile and a joke. I am so proud of this little restaurant and always look forward to seeing my people here. There's plenty of options on the menu for kids and picky eaters. Very "Mexican" decor. Highly decorated and colorful. Menu is adjusted for the Gringos. Toned down to avoid damaging the bland Midwest palate. I had the steak rancheros medium cooked. I was surprised by a thick cut that was very good in spite of the nerfed sauce. The beans were good and my chosen side of grilled veggies was awesome. Flour tortillas weren't worth the effort. The food is always excellent when we eat here. The service has always been great except for today. Service was borderline terrible. Our server took our order then disappeared. Then he showed up again about 15 minutes later to check on us at which point we needed drink refills then he disappeared again. Finally another server brought our food out and he did a great job of taking care of us the rest of the time. I've eaten here numerous times over the years and the service has always been good except for today.
