We stopped here for lunch on the way thru to Roswell. There's not a bunch of options in this little town and saw the billboard on the way in from Petrified Forest NP. It doesn't look like much from the outside and we arrived pretty close to opening for lunch so there really weren't any cars in the parking lot. Upon walking in, the vibe was quaint and warm. Great, great, great. The salsa was nice, not super-hot but hot with a quality flavor. We ordered two meals, a combination plate and a (red)Navajo Taco. The corn shells on the taco and tostado were crispy not soggy. The beans are clearly home made. Fried bread was perfect as was their shredded beef. Just a fantastic effort all around. St. John's is a small town, so there are limited dining options here. But if you're passing through town or visiting, let me catch you up: This is one of the two best places to eat in town! Tried the stuffed jalepenos and onion rings for appetizers. Both are good, deep fried, and hit the spot if this is what you're into. I suspect that the stuffed jalepenos are probably pre-packaged and aren't made in house. However, they didn't claim to be, and were actually delicious. Good complimentary chips and salsa. Tried out the cheese enchiladas (which come with beans, rice, and sopapilla) and they were quite tasty. On this dish, the red sauce was the go-to choice and it did not disappoint. But let me tell you about the most amazing thing I've eaten in awhile: the chicken stuffed sopapilla with green chile sauce. I cannot tell you how amazing this dish was to me. It hit me right in my "I need good Mexican food" stomach and I was in a food coma for hours to come. Delicious shredded chicken, beans, cheese, oh so good! Their green sauce has a bit of a kick (nothing too powerful) and was yum, yum, yum. Good service. Nice people. One of the two places that I absolutely love when I travel to St. John's. Although limited in restaurant options, St. John's doesn't disappoint. El Camino is solid Mexican food. The salsa was delicious. The red tamale was decent. The cheese enchilada (red) was excellent. And I loved the beef taco. I don't know how they seasoned the meat, but it was tasty, especially after a day of being out in the Arizona sun hunting. El Camino sets the standard for delicious Mexican food. Whenever I am in StJohns, I look forward to dropping in for a delicious meal and friendly service. Today Chloe was our server. She was full of smiles and was very helpful with ordering. My husband got an order of ground beef tacos. There are no better tacos anywhere. The meat is seasoned perfectly and the shells make your mouth happy. I ordered a stuffed sopapilla with shredded beef and green chili. It was divine-especially with a dollop of sour cream and guacamole on top. One of my sons loved his bean and cheese burro and my other son attacked his PB and J sopapilla with vigorous glee. Top it off with an ice cold Coke and you've got a great meal! For something really special, try a Mexican dessert: A small sopa topped with grape jelly, cheese, and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Their prices have become ridiculous and you never know when they are going to be open. Five years ago, this was the greatest place to eat in the White Mountains and I recommended this place to everyone I knew. They had decent prices, good portions, and they were open six days a week. Now they are hardly open, maybe a few random days a week and never on the weekend, their prices have sharply risen, their portions have shrunk, and they now charge a few extra dollars for anything take-out, including the salsa. Even still their green chili is the best, the Mexican pizza is great, the sopapilla are amazing, and we love their salsa. The only good thing that has come from their new way of operating is we don't have to wait for ever to get our food because they are always closed when we try to go! read more

This is the best Mexican food restaurant in AZ!! Maybe I am biased, cuz I grew up on it, but I don't think so. I haven't found anything to compare, not even Garcias on 35th, or any other! I say it is worth the over 4 hour drive to eat there :) Some of the best, zappy burger (green), Mexican pizza (red), shredded beef tacos (best shredded beef ever!), shredded beef chimi! We stopped in to check out what the tasty smell was one day when we drove by. We were seated in the dining area which was due for some remodeling in 1990 and is still due. Our waitress was not friendly at all and didn't bother bring us drink refills at all or check on us once. The food was not terrible, but not really very good. Prices were a bit high for the level of quality the food brought with it... All in all, it was ok... Nothing more, nothing less.... I would have given 3 stars but the waitress was rude.... read more

I've lived in St Johns for over 30 years.... a power plant transplant from Tempe, AZ. I've seen the food at El Camino have it's ups and downs over the years. It's been owned by one family all these years and experienced occasional problems, but nothing that wasn't rectified. The best thing about them is the flavor I crave is always there... green chili and salsa. 95% of the time over the past 30 years, El Camino is Five Star rated to me. I'm sorry that a passerby doesn't see the wonderful food El Camino is capable of. Oh, and about the service, these people are regular folks, not New York trained. If they didn't make eye contact or seem friendly, sometimes they are short handed and trying to take care of too many people at once, a common malady in a small town. read more

Terrible Mexican Food if you can call it that! The only thing that's passable is the salsa but they don't even give you decent chips to go with it. The chips looked burnt and tasted stale if that's possible. The beans were bland with absolutely no flavor. The shredded beef Chimichanga was burnt so horribly that it was inedible. The shredded beef inside it tasted like it came from a can. It was burnt so badly that I had to leave the whole thing and should have asked for my money back. Other than the fountain soda that was more sugary sweet than carbonated and the salsa with nothing edible to dip it in; driving pass this place and not eating anything we would have been better off. read more

Not the worst Mexican food, but not the best. Food is yummy but they often overcook the chips, the salsa is great if you can handle real heat, if not, stay far away- it's often too hot for me and I'm no wuss. Guacamole is mostly sour cream and not so great - wish they would make REAL guacamole :/ friendly wait staff and always fast. I spend time on the west coast with family & I've been to this little town a few times & El Camino 3 times. I loved my meal each time. This time I tried the green chili beef chimichanga, one of the best I've had along my travels. Everyone at my table was pleased with the food. I had their green chili chicken chimichanga enchilada style and it was super delicious. It includes a scoop of sour cream and guacamole! Hot food was hot cold food was cold! Passing through St Johns and stopped at this restaurant because of the reviews. I had the most delicious carne asada burrito I have had in a LONG time. The meat was so tender, the tortilla was pretty good, the green chili salsa was amazing and the guacamole was delicious. The waitress was so sweet and helpful. Perhaps the worst Mexican food I've eaten except a TV dinner as a child. The other reviewers are either the owners relatives or are clueless. Anything that was fried was rancid (bad oil), most of our food was overcooked and blah. Chile relleno was like a rubber glove. Stay away. I'd rather have eaten a frozen burrito. Anyone giving lower than 4 stars has never tried their green chile. Pick any of their combinations in green, and you'll be happy. Their red chile sauce is just fine, but it is their green chile that makes this place wonderfully unique. I've never had better. read more
