This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in the White Mountains. My wife and I are remodeling our home and don't have a kitchen. That means eating out every day. We tried every restaurant in the area and Azteca is our favorite. Los Corrales is good but inconsistent. El Azteca is always fresh and perfectly cooked. The margaritas are also very good. I order chicken fajitas mostly and the meat is always fresh and very tender. The lunch servings are enormous and much less expensive than others. Miguel, the server, is always busy but takes the time to serve properly. read more

We chose El Azteca based on the very positive Yelp reviews. As you can tell from my Star rating, our experience did not match those reviews. I We came here on a Sunday for lunch. When we arrived I saw that they were serving a buffet. I asked the person who seated us if we could order off the menu and he said yes. It's possible that our experience was largely due to not choosing the buffet. We were served chips and salsa soon after we were seated and our drink order was delivered quickly. We looked at the menus and waited to place our order. I saw the server take someone's order two booths away and walk past us. Then he served someone at the next booth and was walking past us again. I asked if we could place our order. My wife had the two item special with two chicken burritos. I had the large combination with a chimichanga. Both orders came with rice and beans. The rice and beans were the worst we've ever had. Tasteless. The chicken burritos had shredded chicken without seasoning of any kind. The beef chimichanga was similar. There was some taste because it was deep fried, but the meat itself had no seasoning. We won't be back. read more

Azteca: Where My Stomach Says 'Me Gusta!' We've been to El Azteca a handful of times now, and it's truly one of our go-to spots for Mexican food. We usually stop by after church, and it never disappoints. Our latest orders were the Carne Asada and the Texano Fajitas--both so flavorful, and the servings are just right. We have to ask to-go boxes after. The ambience is really nice--clean, cozy, and I've always loved their booth seating. The staff is always welcoming and friendly the moment we walk in. And yes, they serve freshly cooked chips right away (always a plus for me!) along with their perfect salsa. My husband and I both love Horchata, and we never skip ordering each of us a big glass of that creamy cinnamon goodness. We've also tried their Camarones a la Crema--shrimp sautéed with mushrooms in a creamy sour cream sauce. Rich, comforting, and perfect with the rice and refried beans on the side. Their fajitas for two with steak come out sizzling, exactly how fajitas should. The flavor is on point, and honestly, it could feed more than just two people. The chorizo and eggs always hit the spot, and the enchilada suiza with egg and green sauce is another favorite. It is simple, comforting, and solid every time. We were traveling and got into Show Low late and found this wonderful Mexican restaurant. Fantastic food, service, and environment. We live in Southern California and eat a lot of Mexican food and this restaurant ranks among the best we have eaten in. We will definitely return and would recommend the food to anyone. Cozy family kind of place. Staff were all friendly and welcoming. Big , crunchy basket of chips and bowl of salsa. Not hot or spicy, chunky tomato and lots of cilantro. Wife ordered the fish tacos combo, I had to try the 3 item . Fish tacos not impressive. To me, fish did not taste in its prime. Supposed to be mahi mahi, a bit tough & chewy. On the other hand, we both liked the beans & rice. My tamale was mediocre but the chile relleno was excellent! Gave the beef flauta to my wife to sub for the fish tacos. Overall, filling, satisfying meal in a nice place with nice staff. Prices are the usual, kinda high! The option is eating at home, and we're on VACATION! read more

Mixed review for this restaurant. We had good service, which was prompt and courteous. Everything was very clean and the decorations were fun. Parking is on the back side of the building and we were seated right away. It was about half filled in the evening. We would give five stars for the service and atmosphere, but only three stars for the food. Hence, an overall four-star review. All of us felt that our food was a bit overcooked and oily. Looking for that Mexican restaurant that gives you the smells and fell of being on vacation in Mexico look no further. The staff were polite and knowledgeable about their menu. The beer was cold and had many options for margaritas. The portions are large so we ended up splitting a meal and had food left over. Your lunch starts with a large serving of Tortilla chips and Salsa; very tasty! I have included a picture of the lunch Chimichanga. The meal includes rice and beans. To dress your Chimichanga they provide Guacamole and Sour cream. Be sure to ask for the Hot sauce to spice up your meal Very tasty and filling meal. You might have to ask for a doggy bag? I judge Mexican restaurants by their guacamole, salsa, and margaritas. This place has actual crushed avocados, not the packaged version. You can always tell the packaged- it's too smooth and gooey. This place has thick, creamy avocados. The salsa was bland until we requested the hot one- that was spicy and very good. The margaritas tasted like a bottled mix, so that was a letdown. I have to be honest, the food was just not very good. was terrible and that is your first impression at a Mexican restaurant. The beans were way over salted and the chips tasted really greasy. We finally tried El Azteca and it was delicious. The service was quick and friendly. The chips are fresh and hot. The salsa is fresh. My husband had the carne asada and a side order chile relleno. The relleno was crispy (a little over fried) but we loved the green sauce on it and I liked that it wasn't eggy. I had the shrimp and rice plate. It was flavorful and a very large portion. I really enjoyed my meal at El Azteca. I wanted to try either the Carne Asada or Pollo Asada and asked if I could have half and half they the waiter said he could do this. Both of these dishes were described as charcoal grilled and were excellent. The thin skirt steak was probably my favorite, but the grilled chicken was also excellent. It came with guacamole, pico, rice and beans and was too much to eat. I did eat all the meat, it was too good to leave on the plate. I can't comment on any other items, but next time I'm in Show Low, I'll be sure to try them. read more

I visited on a recommendation from a local as this being his favorite Mexican Restaurant in the area because it was the closest to what he had in Mexico. I was not disappointed. The ambiance is lovely. The servicer was fast, attentive and polite. He was able to recommend which dish would fit my dietary needs and he hit it spot on. On his suggestion I ordered the Pollo Asado with pinto beans versus refried beans. The portion size was perfect and the tastes were amazing. The marinade on the tender, moist chicken was spicy and flavorful without being overwhelming. The pico was fresh without that stale taste you can get sometimes on pico at a restaurant that's sat too long. The guacamole had a great balance of spices and the chips were fresh and crispy. Our experience at El Azteca is probably the best combination of food and service that we have ever had. We both had a combination lunch plate consisting of enchiladas, burritos and tacos. Visited El Azteca Family Restaurant today for lunch. We had frequented this place when it was the previous restaurant so we were familiar with the location and the layout of the restaurant. It's recently reopened under the name El Azteca. The staff is very familiar. If you live here locally you will recognize them from Los Corrales. The food menu offers the same recipes that you can find at Los Corrales as well and the chips and salsa are the same. They are tasty. Chips are fresh and the service was fantastic. We ate off the lunch menu. I had the El Pollo Fundido #16 and the other person in my party had a ham and cheese omelette that was served with rice and beans. They don't have their liquor license . The weight staff was attentive and checked us frequently. They made sure we had what we needed chips and salsa and drinks were kept full. There was a large party in the center of the room, but our meals came promptly. The restaurant has a fresh coat of paint but very similar to the previous restaurant that it replaced. The outdoor patio was redone with flags flying, and had been redone and set up Will be nice for summer visitors or people that have pets. They do have a nice selection of seafood entrees. Although I didn't have it on this visit, I have had many of the shrimp dishes and they are all delicious. We will return! read more

This place is the bomb! My husband and I dined here tonight. This is our third time. I had a green corn tamale with green sauce, rice, and beans (not the refried beans). Not too many Mexican restaurants serve the green corn and theirs was delicious. I got a horchata for my drink. It was out of this world. My husband got the shredded beef chimichanga with rice and the refried beans. He loved it. He let me taste it - total perfection. We definitely will be back to try another entree.
