I have always liked this place. The food is very good and the staff is very attentive. The only issue I have is that someone decided to install green lightbulbs in all of the light fixtures over the booths. This makes all the food look terrible. I hope they change these out soon. meat portions are increasingly smaller, dishes are additionally smaller, it's always difficult to contact via telephone, consistently leave out dish components and sides..whenever addressing with staff they consistently explain they have a list of customers who have not received complete orders and they check with each order and compensate for those omissions ...I after months have never received any compensation for these repeated order errors-I'm talking 70+$'s per order weekly ...I guess not impressed with okay food and no customer value.... read more

Over time I believe El Cazador has been the most consistent with their quality of food and service. Their competition in town lacks tremendous service. Taco Wagon may have a little edge of taste, but the service screws them up. El Cazador puts forth the effort to do everything they can to take care of you. read more

I'll say this as subtly as I can: any Mexican restaurant that doesn't serve all their food with a dousing of tomato soup and bland ketchup dip is fine by me. If you get the message here then you're either mad at me or you totally agree. Moving on. Here is a unique factor that I love about this restaurant and other Appomatox establishments: they serve local wine and beer. El Cazador serves Devil's Backbone beer, in particular, the Vienna Lager. Second, and this is reflective of their Gretna location as well, there are specials with a creative flair and on this occasion, I ordered the Philly Cheese stake burrito which was big enough to serve two people and was served with two sides. Other positive factors that should be commonplace are a clean restaurant, friendly service, and salsa with visible chunks of onion and cilantro. I also like to see many dishes with avacado, pineapple, jalapeno or other accoutrements that aren't primarily bad fat, cheese, or salt ridden. I wish we had another restaurant like this in Lynchburg. For now, I'll have to stick with Mi Patron being my favorite local Mexican restaurant until another tickles my fancy. In the meantime Lynchburg, follow the example of Appomattox and SERVE LOCAL WINES AND BEER!!!! read more

We all deserve better! In town on a work adventure, we found that there wasn't a lot of selection for food. Google mentioned that this was close, so we stopped in, because Mexican food is fairly consistent and normally can't go wrong for price and flavor. Upon entering we were promptly greeted by an outgoing, friendly server (I do not recall his name). We were sat and provided with chips and salsa. (Up to this point the experience was good.) After some (too much) time had passed our server finally arrived. Friendly was not part of his demeanor. It's as if we were a bother to him. We made no special demands him or the meal. The meal it's self was also a disappointment. Cheese enchiladas is what I ordered, and is what I got a tortilla shell with half melted cheese. No beans or rices or garnishments for them. As we wrap up our meal the server, more or less tosses the check on the table. Hovers like a hawk over us while we are still eating and discussing work. Getting the hint to get him away, we promptly pay the check, so we can continue the meeting without his presence. Doubt I will ever be back in the area, but if so, I would try the italian restaurant a few doors down. read more

Really disappointing... Looking for a quick lunch after visiting the national Park, we stopped in here to a packed restaurant. Service seemed quick, at least with the chips and salsa. But when we ordered the black bean soup nothing came for half an hour. It turns out they had none left. So instead they took some cooked black beans threw some stock on top of it and tried to present it as a soup ... which it was definitely not. The usual combination platter of tamales, tacos etc. was delivered quicker but was less memorable and less edible For a busy tourist town there is a remarkable lack of choice when it comes to restaurants which is quite sad read more

Awful experience, crappy service, even worse food. I came here with my in-laws to have a bite to eat after a baby shower. Here's how it went: - Waiter could hardly speak English, ordering was very difficult - The staff was not inviting, did not seat us properly, and took a lot of time to refill drinks and take orders. - While some may think it's a good thing, but the alcoholic beverages were ridiculously strong, like taking a shot with every sip. - The Food was extremely salty and a complete mess, I had an enchilada and chalupa. What I received was a salt-stick of an enchilada, and a flat tortilla shell thrown under all the sides on my plate. Absolutely unacceptable. - I was over-charged for my food, they made a mistake when entering it. - When I told the manager about my terrible experience, they said they would do nothing to make it right because "only you complained and the entire party should've complained if there was a real issues". In summation: I will NEVER EVER come here EVER again, and I will urge every sentient being to do the same. If I could I'd tell flies to go land of food elsewhere rather than buzz around in such a negative, salty environment. read more

It's hard to find a Mexican restaurant that doesn't serve really tasty, well-prepared food, but we found one. We ate at El Cazador recently, and anticipated a tasty and filling lunch. The restaurant was clean, and the service was prompt , but the food was awful. We both ordered the half burrito, hers with rice and mine with refried beans. The "refried beans" was just a slurry, but the rice was O.K. The meat in the burrito filling was inedible. Clearly left over from last night's dinner offering, it was tough as shoe leather. Also, there was no offering of sour cream, was is common in most Mexican restaurants. Overall, a very disappointing meal. read more

The food was delicious and the best fresh chips and salsa that tasted homemade. I had the Carnitas it's a pork dish that is out of this world. It's a very large portion enough to take home. I think I filled up too much on chips. The wait staff was extremely friendly and continually check on us to see if we had everything we needed. It's in a strip mall in Appomattox. Portions are large and the price is really good. My dish was the most expensive at 11.99 Most are under 10. We did go for lunch so it was a lunch menu. We live in Richmond Virginia and the food here is even better and the price is much more reasonable. We will definitely go back when we visit in Appomattox. read more

I rarely give a place 1 star, but this place genuinely deserves it. It's a prime example of how bad, or ineffective management can really hurt a restaurant. The place is well laid out, with nice decor and comfortable booths on each side, the decor is pleasant and comfortable. House made chips and salsa are provided free at each table, which is a nice touch since many places charge you for them nowadays. Obviously someone that knew what they were doing set the place up. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill from there every year. I've visited the place intermittently for about 6 years on and off (Not too much choice in Appomattox) and I like Mexican food. Each time for the last 4 times, I've sworn never to return, but this final time last week will be my last. The bathroom is dirty, the sink faucet is so loose it literally rattles around in your hand when you try to use it and no paper! There's no excuse for that AND I'm a strong believer in the dirty bathroom = dirty kitchen theory, (if you can't be bothered to clean what customers see, how likely are you to clean what they can't see). I was in for an early lunch, so It hadn't been touched since the day before. The big screen TV in the restaurant main area had a Mexican soap on in Spanish with no subtitles, obviously intended for the waitresses entertainment not the customers. I ordered the taco's (hard to go wrong with tacos) 2 beef, 1 chicken. They arrived quickly and were dumped on the table on a small square plate with a taco rack. I had to ask for a proper plate to eat them over since the rack would have spilled any falling food onto the table. The chicken taco was boiled to death in a strange sauce I did not recognize, or like, but I was hungry so I ate it. The beef taco was so salty, it was totally inedible, I took one bite and that was enough. I called over the waitress and she looked at my almost full plate, took it and wordlessly brought me the bill. Which I paid and I left. Either, she hadn't been trained to ask if anything was wrong, or had been told NOT to ask if anything was wrong, or maybe she just didn't give a damn. Either way, it was a dirty place, it was terrible service from people who couldn't care less, terrible food from a bad cook, who has long since given up caring and a manager who MUST be seeing this, is certainly hearing this from customers and reviews, but is either totally incompetent, or just doesn't give a damn about the customers. Cleanliness is easy, holding the waitstaff to some basic standards is easy, Mexican food is not hard to prepare well. Appomattox deserves better than this. read more

This place is always consistently good! You can expect to have friendly and fast service and excellent food and drink. The house margaritas are very good and they usually have a seasonal speciality drink. This holiday season the featured drink was The Grinch. I didn't have one but it looked great! I stuck with my usual house margarita which didn't disappoint at all. The chips and salsa are always quite fresh and tasty! This time I ordered enchiladas supreme and they were bomb! Terrible restaurant experience avoid at all cost. Had to wait an entire hour for 3 tacos. Waiters purposely tried their hardest to avoid customers and talk with each other. Dont bother... go next door to Chinese or fast food thats nearby ... we have given them multiple opportunities and every time is a disappointment... todays visit to pick up a to go order... called ahead and was told that it would be 15-20 minutes ... went to pick up after 20 minutes and waited another 15 minutes and had to ask the hostess to check on our order twice. This was a simple order of vegetarian fajitas and there was only one table of patrons dining in the restaurant. Worst restaurant in Appomattox County. I have been to this place on 3 occasions and each time the service was terrible, the waiters barely spoke any English and most of the waiters just sat around at the bar and talked to each other, they also just avoided many customers as much as they possibly could. Also the food is not real mexican food and is very bland tasting, plus the food came out an hour after it was ordered. If you're looking for somewhere to eat in Appomattox eat at one of the other establishments like Pino's Italian restaurant or Golden China. read more
