Granted I'm a Mexican Food aficionado, so I am probably not an impartial reviewer. Being from Texas (Tex-Mex country), living in California and traveling to Mexico often, I am definitely picky about my Mexican food. El Jinete is a side of the highway joint in Cumberland, Virginia...and being that it is not bad. Good chips, yes. Good salsa, ok but cold. They would do better to warm it a bit. Good refried beans and Spanish rice, yes. Good beef fajita meat, big NO. Over cooked and dry. Chicken quesadilla, ok, but not outstanding. Service was great and prices were low. Place was clean and not crowded. Since there are not a lot of options in the area it was good enough to get us by. In the future, we will drive a bit further for a better meal. Take away...go vegetarian and have bean and rice tacos!! read more

My Bride and I stopped in for lunch on the way home from deer camp. We each got a lunch special. Both were delicious! For a cup of coffee, a House Special, and a Combo #1, our total was $23.17 after tax but before tip. Now that I know about this place, I definitely plan to return. read more

If you're in the mood for Mexican food, this is a good place to go (arguably the only place to go for miles, but still a worthy challenger). We couldn't put a finger on the style or region of Mexican food they were serving (it wasn't Baja, it wasn't New Mexico/Southwest style. It was closest to Tex-Mex but still different from even that in our opinion) but it was still quite good. The fajitas were a great deal. The only caveat, imho, it lacked seasoning and was a bit shy on flavor. Great serving size though. The pork verde was very good. Definitely the winner that evening at our table. Service was good. We were the only ones there at the time since it was an early dinner for us that day. (As we were leaving there a handful of patrons arriving) Ambience was classic Mexican restaurant with the very common Mexican art that seems to be staples in every Mexican restaurant across the nation which we actually really like and appreciate. The seating and tables were clean and comfortable. We felt "right at home" for our Mexican food dinner. read more

We just stopped by for some Mexican food, and I am very pleased. I decided to order something that I've never had before: Huevos Rancheros. It was under the 'lunch specials' so it was only $6.00! It was a delicious meal for a great price. I was very happy that I tried something new, and was happy that I stepped out of my comfort zone. The egg was SO GOOD!! We also ordered the rancheros soup, which had an incredible flavor. I would highly recommend the Arroz con Pollo and the Alambre....both meals were delicious, and we all ate until we were stuffed! The staff members were pleasant and wore masks, so we felt safe eating there until the current circumstances. They even had picnic tables in the back! This is a great destination if you're looking for a bite on the side of the road...we are all leaving with full bellies and zero complaints!! read more

We love this little oasis on Route 60 in Cumberland County. If you know the road, then you know Cumberland is the place where you'd better slow down hard and fast to avoid the ever-present speed traps. Along the way, you'll find El Jinete in a nondescript building. Go inside, and you'll find a very attentive wait staff and tasty Mexican food in a relaxed atmosphere. We stop here about every two weeks on our way to our place in the foothills, so we've tried just about everything on the menu. Everything is excellent, but don't skip the chili relleno. OMG Besides delicious food (see other reviews, all 5 stars and I agree) an amazing and lovely treat, is a VIRGIN pina colada (you can still drive your car back to work after lunch or home after dinner!) which is amazingly made from scratch. I have never had such a superior drink, -- and with the lack of alcohol, you can taste each of the flavors that goes into it. Even without alcohol, it might be a bit too sophisticated for young children. read more

Delicious, simple Mexican food. Chips were hot and prompt and the salsa was served in chilled bowls. The tortillas served with dinner were warm and fluffy, fresh off the press. Awesome food, authenticity, and staff. Warm and "freshly" made tortillas with cool salsa begin every meal. Food presentation that is so good I more then once took a picture of my meal and couldn't bring myself to eat it for awhile. If you crave authentic, then run to El Jinete. It's the best!!! read more

This place is a little off the beaten path - BUT well worth it. Excellent food. Delicious salsas. We got a chicken and chorizo dish that had an incredible depth of flavor you won't find at any Mexican restaurant. Dessert was delicious and service was top notch. Highly recommended! read more
