I want to preface this by saying I am a vegetarian since the mid 90s, and that I understand it is traditional to use lard in Mexican dishes, and I don't expect everywhere to offer food without it. However, I have eaten here maybe 10 times in recent years. I have been told each time that the red enchilada sauce and beans are vegetarian. So I really enjoyed eating these items and appreciated that they could accommodate. The burritos, the enchiladas... with modifications like no rice I was told were vegetarian. Fast forward to last night, I hadn't been since 2020 (I live in NY) so I asked the server to confirm which things were vegetarian. She said NONE OF IT, and when I asked if it used to be she said it never has been. Maybe they used to have whole beans and now they don't? I don't even want to know about the tortillas. Obviously the rice is usually chicken stock, I'm used to that. She seemed to feel bad, because there was basically nothing on the menu I could eat. My boyfriend and I got some mediocre sopapillas, ate their delicious chips and salsa, and left for probably the last time... I am really bummed out about this. Not only because I feel my beliefs were disrespected or I was deliberately lied to sooo many times. I recognized the server we usually have, and she has worked there for years. How could she not know? Please, El Charro, educate your staff on ingredients or include this information on your menu like some other places do. Maybe offer whole beans or a couple menu items, besides just veg fajitas, so us meat free folks have something filling to enjoy. At the very least, be transparent about your ingredients so people don't mistakenly betray their beliefs... I am cringing seeing El Charro being listed online as veg friendly. And also, I'm pretty heartbroken I likely won't get to eat here again. read more

Started off with the tastiest fresh chips and flavorful salsa. Not your thick kind of salsa, on the thinner side but really good. My margarita dipped in tajin was seriously great! Who knew in this little out of the way place that I'd find the best margarita! The main courses we ordered: Saddle burrito in red sauce and chile relleno combo dinner enchilada style. Get almost everything enchilada style because the sauce is sooo good! The stewed beef in and on the saddle burrito was so tender and delicious. I just got in my truck to leave, full as can be, and I'm ready for my next trip back! I grabbed a to go menu on my way out! With this place being in the same family for 70+ years, I knew it was a must try & I'm so glad we did! The cilantro salsa is exactly the type this lady loves! I wanted to try the Chile Relleno but they had run out and were currently not dipping more so it's my next dish! I had the Chile Con Carne (red with a side of sour cream, both suggested by two of the lovely ladies working) and was not disappointed! My plate was loaded, are all I could, and I still have a very full to go box! Basically: wonderful history, wonderful food, wonderful service. Zero reasons for me to not return as soon as we are able! El Charro Cafe is my hubby's favorite Mexican restaurant in Yuma. We went there for his birthday tonight. Although they don't do reservations, I spoke with a manager by the name of Christian on Sunday who took my info and said he would help accommodate our party. We went tonight and as always, the food and service was amazing! We were a party of 14 and we didn't have any problems with anything we ordered. Really disappointed in the food, it was pretty awful. We had the enchilada special and it tasted like a microwave dinner. The food was way over salted, the rice was over cooked, and beans tasted like they were on the verge of burnt. I have been coming here for more that 50 years and have always had a great meal, the only problem is as I age I can't finish what they bring me. I get the number 1 combo and used to be able to polish it off but can't do it any more. I like this order because it includes a variety of flavors, the tamale was so good that we got a dozen to go. Recommend highly by Mexicans & old people. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. The staff was friendly, attentive, and nice enough for a 20% tip. There was enough seating space to accommodate large groups. From the menu the "Red Enchilada" was better than the "Green Enchilada" with the lunch special. My Mexican friend said the "Mexican Steak" was well seasoned carne asada and tasted fair by his standards. My other friend said it was as good as your gonna get for Senora-style Mexican fare. I'm a native Southern Californian and we know good authentic Mexican food and I can say with a straight face I have NEVER had a meal like this back home! Looking for a decent Mexican restaurant near the Mexican border somehow can be challenging sometimes. We were directed to this place which had mixed reviews. Supposed to be pretty old. Not great, but not bad either. Tried the beef tacos-some tased like dried beef sticks and some too greasy to eat. The rice and beans were OK. Beers were ice cold and around $3.50. The margs didn't seem to have any booze in them so we had to order shots of tequila to make them taste like margs. The decor looked like something you would find in a border town-spartan with the occasional Mexican hat. Don't think we are going back. On to the next one down the street. read more

Good always good here, I love their green sauce. Owners are very nice. But BE AWARE they have added extra 2% tax on their "Take a ways". 10.41% tax, Yuma County is 8.41%. I like the food here. They have the best albondigas soup. It was piping hot and so flavorful. I got the meal so it came with rice and a warm tortilla. It was way more than I could eat. Great atmosphere with amazing friendly service. Happy hour lasts until 6pm and they have a good deal on beer ($2) and margaritas ($3). The margaritas were better than I expected for $3. I had the number one combination and my wife had the chimichanga. Both were very good and the guacamole on the chimichanga was fresh and good. I rarely write bad reviews. This one is motivated by my inability to find solid Mexican food in Yuma, albeit, I've only been to a few places... Watery salsa. Enchiladas rendered inedible from too much salt. Top it off with a manager who wanted to argue with me that they were probably too salty due to the cheese. Yes, cheese has salt, but these would have been too salty without the cheese. Eat somewhere else. There must be good Mexican food in Yuma somewhere? Still searching. read more

Definitely start you meal with a toasted cheese crisp. They are the best! I have been eating at El Charro ever since they were a small cafe on 4th Avenue. It's one of my go to meals whenever I return from being out of town for any period of time. This restaurant is a hometown favorite that never disappoints. The green enchiladas or green saddle burritos are my favorites. Bring your appetite because you will get more food than you can eat but a take out container can always assure a great lunch or dinner for another day. read more

The Prison Guards at the Yuma State Prison highly recommended this establishment. The food is very authentic, the service was superior, I felt at home with my Abuelita serving me her warm and welcoming smile. My margarita was blended with perfection, very balanced. Don't miss out on this gem! Loved this family restaurant, now in it's 3rd generation! I and friend were on a trip through Yuma, and found El Charro. First time here but that was an customer exception as the staff was on first-name basis with everyone else on the patio. Though the staff did not know me or my lunch partner, they were just as friendly to us as the customers they obviously knew well. The chips were freshly made and crunchy. Two salsas were presented on the table. One was tomatillo based, and mild. It might even have had some mango in it. The other was a tomato based, a bit like pico de gallo, slightly more seasoned, a medium heat at the most. I requested a hotter salsa and received one completely different. This was more mild red chili focused, slightly hotter but not too hot. A smoky flavor, with a slight hint of sweet. I had the tostado grande, which is shaped into a bowl instead of a flat tostado. I substituted chicken for the machaca. The chicken was nicely flavored, moist, and shredded. The lettuce was fresh, beans were home-made, and the guac was fantastic. My lunch partner had the 'C' special of Chile Relleno, Folded Taco, Refried Beans and Rice. The relleno was home-made; crispy outside and a well-stuffed mild green chili (poblano?). The beans were flavorful and smooth, and the rice was nicely seasoned without being too hot (season-wise). I like hot seasoning, my lunch partner not-so-much. She really liked the rice b/c it wasn't too hot. The beans were so good I ordered some to take to the hotel to have the next day (refrigerator in room).
