It's not California-Mexican good but this is the best Mexican food I've tried in WA so far! The mole is my favorite, but don't expect anything spicy or with a kick. Got a ToGo order. $12 16oz Margarita tasted like well tequila. Street tacos were $3.95 a piece and had no taste. Originally ordered 10 then when bill was $70 for a margarita, coke and tacos I cut order in half. Over priced for the quality of food and presentation of the Togo order. read more

Just gross. Period. Environment was unsanitary. Who has bug zappers above dining tables....seriously?! Salt and pepper shakers were covered in grime, so I didn't add any to my extremely bland food. Staff was not pleasant at all. Plus a random brown stain on the wall behind us. I'm amazed this place hasn't been shut down by the Health Department. A decent enough place to stop either on your way up or down I-5 or on the way back from Mt. St. Helens. The service when we were there was fairly quick and friendly. The restaurant is nicely decorated inside and the front booths have big windows (view to the parking lot and highway). The food was pretty good, but not out of the ordinary, and the prices reasonable. Kids under 12 have several menu items to choose from in the $3 to $4 range. I had fish tacos, but I wish I had "gonchitos" (roasted game hen)-- I saw someone else being served that and immediately knew that if I ever go back, and I would go back, I would order that! read more

This place isnt very good. We're new to the area and hoping that our local Mexican restaurant was good because who doesn't like Mexican?? Unfortunately, It's not....Food is bland, margaritas were marginal, and the service is worse, if you can believe that. My wife and I ordered the fajitas. The waitress brings corn tortillas for both of us, so my wife mentioned she ordered flour and the waitress argued with her and said "No you didn't, you ordered corn, that's why I brought corn". And then continued to argue to the point where I was watching in amazement. I couldn't believe that a waitress was arguing with us about what we ordered and wanted to eat. There are some restaurants that have great reviews but don't live up to the expectations. El Compadre is a restaurant that will meet and exceed the reviews given to date. They have well prepared food that is flavorful and well presented. We have been dining at this place off and on for over 12 years and have enjoyed many meals. I wanted to post a really positive review....but nothing i ordered was really spectacular. I got the sampler quesadilla, nacho, taquito plate. Unfortunately, the nacho chips tasted stale like the chips that came with thw salsa in the beginning. Everything else was fine....just nothing top notch or unforgetable. When this place first opened up (around 1997/8) it was such good food. I worked next door and they never hesitated to deliver my meal to me. The food was of good quality and was a little but on the expensive side, but was so worth it. The staff all made me feel like I was important to their business, and as a result I would send people there all the time -- friends and family and even people traveling through that would stop in and treat where I worked as an information booth. Fast forward to now and their food is lacking. I can easily drive to Guadalajara in Longview for better quality food at way larger portions, for about the same price. The staff, while still friendly, makes me feel like I'm new in town. Their prices have gone up, and that's understandable, but they've really cut back on their portion sizes and quality of food. If you go here, you'll likely enjoy the pollo a la crema and a nice blended watermelon margarita -- delicious. read more

My friend and I were on our way to Mt St Helens. I didn't want to eat at a restaurant with a bunch of pick-up trucks or motorcycles in the parking lot so we chose this place. I guess residents in Castle Rock don't like spice or flavor because I ordered a taco salad and it lacked just that. I ended up bumming off my friend's order which wasn't much different. A customer behind us was praising how good the food was. I'm not sure if he's ever been to a major city. We should have eaten in Centralia/Chehalis. This is by far the WORST restaurant in the history of restaurants! I remember eating here all the time in high school with friends, but somewhere along the way they lost their mojo. I have a 3 strikes rule on restaurants I've previously enjoyed, but they only got two. Here is why... Strike One: My glass had lipstick and finger prints all over it when it was served to me and my order was wrong. Strike Two: Trash in my nachos. Seriously!? I'll never, ever go back. And I'm not the only local to give up on them! Stay away from this place!!! If you want decent Mexican food, keep heading North to Toledo and eat at Los Pepes. oh Tex-Mex how I miss you.... sigh... Being from Texas, I am on a search for the closest to food to Tex-Mex in WA state, and I think I found it. sadly it is very, very far from Seattle. I ordered the fajitas, and they were cooked with some "teriyaki style" sauce on them WTF?! the refried beans and guacamole were delicious and the tortillas were home-made. I mentioned to the waiter that I am originally from Texas, so when I ordered the "sopapilla" he immediately told me it is not the puffy version that I am accustomed to. this version is fried flour tortilla strips with cinnamon, sugar and syrup...huh??!? Five stars might be a bit of a stretch, but this place is an old and trusted friend on the tedious drive between Portland and Seattle. They have the usual Cal-Mex stuff along with some unusual offerings like gordornis (game hen). Food is tasty and staff has always been friendly, even seating us at night after the usual closing time when they were just "waiting for the carpet cleaners". Helpful with the kids' food allergies (they often need to be gluten- and/or dairy-free). A worthy stop for a hungry traveller. read more

Oh boy we really enjoyed this place. The servers were very friendly and professional. The food was very good. We always order rice/beans and a tamale when we go to a new Mexican restaurant to gauge it. This place did not let us down. The rice was amazing and the tamale was one of the most tender and moist I think I have ever had. We also ordered some flour tortillas they were just as good as the rest of our food.
