I've been into this major Spanish department stores in past visits but never really walked around to look closer at their merchandise. This time we browsed each of the 6+ floors they have and realized they stock a huge selection of fashion, shoes, home items and food goods. I was very impressed at the quality of their goods and the friendly service of all associates in each department. The highlight was visiting their cafe restaurant on the top floor. They had everything from paella, pizza & pasta, Asian, baked goods to desserts. The dining area with its expansive views was worth the visit alone. read more

Reminds me of the Union Square Macy's in San Francisco except with a fabulous super market in the basement floor. Needless to say I spent most of my time in the basement. Oh yeah baby... canned sardines, canned octopus canned tuna. Iberico ham, Spanish olive oil, magnificent European cheeses,. a deli with an array of Spanish olives, octopus salad, boquerones en vinagre ( fillets of anchovies marinated in Spanish olive oil and vinegar). a section dedicated to fresh whole seafoods displayed on ice. El Corte Inglés is a huge department store, it is one of the chain's flagship locations with nine floors, it can't get more central in the city, right in the iconic Plaça de Catalunya. From fragrances to technology, from hosting a supermarket to many places to grab food and drink, there is a wide selection of services available here, it would be easy as a tourist to not realise something here, even though the store plan is helpful, it doesn't clearly promote everything. This also means if you're planning to visit for one or two things - it could be super time-consuming to find that part of the store, so you must be prepared to spend time here, even just to visit the supermarket or the toilets. There weren't too many staff members around who could offer assistance, granted it would be difficult to have them all over a nine-floor department store, but still, installing touch-screens or tech points would be helpful. It feels high-end, similar to a Selfridges sort of thing, which I'd find back home in the UK, the vibes inside are rather nice and the store is accommodating and useful to tourists and locals alike down to their products and location. 4* read more

Just like Macy's they say, the only mall allowed to operate in Spain they say. It's all that and a bag of chips. My first experience at an El Corte Ingles (The English Court) was in Portugal. And it was delightful then and it's still delightful now. This one was quite fancy and the grocery store was pure eye candy for me with all of the Mediterranean stuff that we don't eat enough of. I got some Filipinos cookies, Manila IPAs, cidre, Foie gras (duck liver pate), olives, etc. I'm almost out of the cookies, darn!! The mall also provided a reprieve from the heat and sun, it was at about 83 F. I also used the men's room which was immaculate for a busy mall. If there's ever a zombie apocalypse, I'd like to be holed up here, surrounded by all this good food. Oh, they charge for bags so bring some or a back pack. read more

I have visited numerous El Corte Ingles stores throughout Spain... HOWEVER.. it wasn't until my recent visit to Madrid, that my cousin and me discovered their wonderful 9th floor market. The market offers delectables from wines ( from different regions), chocolates, nuts, cakes, etc.. a smorgasbord for eyes, stomach and heart. We loved our visit and dined and drank and enjoyed the beautiful sunset views. Thus, today I decided to stop in for a quick bite post Tibidabo visit. The market houses a variety of food options: traditional Catalan dishes, Japanese teriyaki, grilled meats, salads, wines, juices and desserts. I was in the mood for paella.. I mean when you're in Spain, that is the dish to devour.* The market offered three options: squid ink rice, vegetarian and mixed. I opted for the mixed which consisted of chicken pieces( small bones ), shrimp, mussels and vegetables in yellow rice. The plate cost @11 euros. Not bad: it is a filling plate....thus come a little hungry. The rice tasted as if it has a bit of beer in it.. could be wrong. It was delicious! Add the magnificent free views of Barcelona and a glass of wine.. now you're cooking! The market is quite big and spacious dining. Sadly, it didn't offer the delectables that the Madrid location offers. So next time you're in Spain EAT at El Corte Ingles, oh yeah it does sell clothes, makeup, shoes.. I mean if you really have to buy clothes.. * noticed my little asterisk.. the best paella I've eaten in Barcelona is in Paella Bar, you need at least a second person to share. The portions are huge! El Corte has been around for about 70 years. They have multiple locations throughout Spain. I really liked their houseware department but was not brave enough to bring breakables. They have some nice quality things. I looked forward to stopping in at El Corte Ingles on my trip to Barcelona. My first time there was in 2005. I still think of the store from time to time even though I live in Florida. I like how they have a supermarket in the basement. There have some neat finds there, such as different flavored Lays chips and specialty chocolates. They have some nice clothing for women. I bought a few things and the prices are pretty fair. The sales associates were nice and we were able to communicate even though I don't speak Spanish. They have everything under the sun here including a travel agency. The store has about eight levels. It is fun to explore what they have. I would love for them to come to Florida but I doubt that will happen. read more

It's a nice mall BUT the second floor bathroom for women had TWO stalls. Waited like half an hour in line for the bathroom which was smelly, filthy and the soap machine didn't work. I mean, HUGE mall, disgusting tiny bathroom. Also, VERY long wait for tax free services. Ridiculous. read more

This shopping mall is a must see. I was looking for women clothing. They have a variety of clothing from medium pricing (Macy's) types to high end (Neimen Marcus) but you will definitely find what you're looking for. They also have food court and grocery stores on the ground level. Best empanada in town. 4 score because their bathroom has 2 stalls and begs for remodeling. read more

El Corte Inglés is a HUGE department store. They sell everything - clothes, bags, shoes, electronics, souvenirs, and there's even a supermarket downstairs. There's also a food court on the top with options like pasta, pizza, paella, sandwiches, salads, just to name a few. Food is pretty good and prices are reasonable. My boyfriend and I shared an omelette and a seafood paella, which came with a good amount of seafood. However, I'm not sure if the food court is worth going to just because of the long checkout lines and fighting for a table. The seating area overlooks Placa de Catalunya, but it's tough enough getting a regular table, let alone a table with a view. I'm glad I got the chance to check it out but I doubt I would return. read more

Located on the 9th floor of the mall, this cafeteria has the most amazing view of the city. The view is in a semi circle. The entrance is free, which is amazing because for this type of view, they could definitely charge or make this into a classy restaurant. I'm advised that it was actually a classy restaurant before, which explains the architectural design and current decor. To order, you take a trolley and stack it with trays. I ordered the paella and churros and both were great! The paella was better than some touristy spots. You can pour your own beer. You then pay at a cashier and roll your trolley to your desired spot. Although it's the biggest department store in the city, it's not quite the Harrod's of Barcelona. There just aren't enough stylish elements to warrant the parallel. Truth be told, it reminds me most of a Macy's, a nice one but still a Macy's. For instance, instead of a high-end food hall in the basement, there's a supermarket. There are eleven floors of merchandise here, and climbing the escalators can take a while since some of the floors look fairly identical. For instance, men's sportswear is something Catalans can't seem to get enough of. Good for nice souvenirs (olive oil, almond biscuits, pre-sliced acorn fed ham) 9th floor has a fancy food court with spectacular views of the city. I like to grab a €6.50 bowl of assorted salads and dispense a €3 glass of wine and catch the sunset in the wifi section. Being from New York City, I'm used to very large department stores. This is one of those larger departments stores that are very concentrated in everything you need for a home and lifestyle. I want to say there seven floors for shopping and a Gastro market at the top for hot food dishes. On the bottom floor of the store is a supermarket so you can do grocery shopping as well. The set up and displays are very eye-catching. And my brother department stores prices vary depending on what it is you're looking for. My suggestion is after a little window shopping or seriously shopping, head upstairs to the top floor where you can get a delicious meal and enjoy the view of Barcelona from a window seat. read more

El Corte Inglés (lit. the English cut) is a national institution and the country's (and Europe's) largest department store chain. Think of a pretty upscale version of Walmart or Target. While Barcelona has several of these stores located all around the city the store located in Plaça de Catalunya is the most well known. The store itself is HUGE, covering nine floors. They sell everything from cosmetics in the ground floor to clothing on the first few floors, household accessories, electronics and even a food court on the top floor. As a tourist, there are two most important floors to note: - Food court on 9th floor. There's a good selection of various Spanish food items. Though I didn't get to eat here the presentation was clean and I was able to take a brief glimpse of the top-floor views. - The 5th floor is where all the tourist souvenirs are sold. The quality and type of items sold is very comparable to items sold in the official shops of the various attractions and I would trust anything here over most merchants in the city. I was able to find a very nice ceramic figurine with a dress decorated in the trencadis style (think Park Güell) and a Trump caganer. They packaged my figurine in a way that it safely made the trip home in my checked bag. read more

Dont be fooled by the foriegner package they offer. The discount card is not. Your purchase bonus is 10% of your present purchase discounted on your next purchase. If that doesnt do your head in. You have to make your next purchase within 4 days because the card has a lifespan of 5 days and youve already used 1 on your first purchase. At which time if you havent made your next purchase you loose your benefit. At time they say no problems just go down to customer serice, navigate their complex waiting system, grab your number wait 20 minutes be served by some who rather be somewhere else and are intent on you knowing that. Of course what else are you holiday in Spain for to waste 1 hr of your life every 5 days at Corte Ingles. Some dumb actuary with no life experience has come up this programme specicaly to deny you any benefits due to the fact that every days you lose your last purchase. They worked out that people on holidays shop at Corte Ingles shop on average every 6 days. So 5 means you get zero benefit. By the way the card is in Spanish writing they dont tell you it expires in 5 days. When you complain they say you should read the fine print its in the fine print, of course in Spanish. Then they say we have it in English Of course they didnt offer it in English, " but you should have asked for it in English" thats why we go on holidays to be reading the fine print on all the transactions you do. Javier Navas was the manager at Cadiz store that told us its our duty to read the fine print and if cant read Spanish you should ask for an Engish card. Not that anyone offered that to the English passport holder. No apology for our lost benefits, just basically your stupid was the attitude. This in front of all his staff. read more

My go-to shopping spot whenever I visit Spain, and this location is the mother of all El Corte Ingles. It covers a city block and towers over Placa Catalunya. You can find everything you need here. During my travels I have come here for their supermarket in the basement, pharmacy, stationary, and when I once forgot my power adapter, I found one here for cheap! It's also a good place to find gifts/souvenirs. They offer foreign visitors 10% off, plus you can get 13% of the IVA back if you get a tax free form. Fashion-wise, you can find a wide variety of brands (both Spanish and International) from mid-range to more high end. E.g. desigual, Longchamps, Tous, French Connection, Sfera, Camper, Marc Jacobs, La Perla, etc. There's also a smaller location off Las Ramblas that is more geared to a younger demographic, which is worth checking out too! read more

This was a great department store with a ton of items to choose from. Their men's selection was actually really good - no matter what style you were looking for, the available items were great. From simple and casual to trendy and chic, there were lots of great choices. Most of the items had a great European cut to them (very different from the larger American cut) and I thought everything fit perfectly. They have a grocery store on the basement level as well as a restaurant at the very top, which actually offers some great views of Barcelona. read more

It's a nice mall but I had a very bad shoe buying experience. I wanted to buy a pair of loafers, and the only pair they have left was the floor sample. The shoe on the floor sample had a significant scratch on it and it was a summer model, so they were phasing it out anyway. I asked if there was anything they could do in terms of a discount which would be expected anywhere else and he just shook his head and said no. I felt being American played something into it as he figured I would never be back, so why not take advantage of the situation. Very disappointing to be treated that way. read more

Taking up a whole side of Plaça de Catalunya, this huge building ranging over 12 (yes, 12) floors is the largest of this ubiquitous Spanish chain in Barcelona. The range of stuff it sells is huge, with the emphasis on serving well-heeled customers: it's generally fairly pricey, although there are some bargains to be had during one of the frequent sales. Menswear sticks to well-known, traditional brands, with traditional, even middle-aged, styling - I've never seen such a wide range of pyjamas and dressing gowns - so it's better for formal wear than casuals. Other sections - such as gifts, soft furnishings, luggage, kitchenware and electronics - offer a wider range of choice, and more reasonable prices. There are lots of useful services such as watch, luggage and shoe repairers - useful to know if you are travelling. As you'd expect, the staff are generally very professional, though in my experience can be slightly condescending, and occasionally it seems the whole sales service can break down when they are really busy. (Why not employ more staff at sales time?) Insider's tip: the restaurant and cafe on the top floor have an outside terrace - an excellent place to get a roof-top view of this part of the city. read more

My favorite one is the one in Madrid close to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium because it has nice stores such as Dior, Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. I walked from my hotel. The people that work here are a bit snotty but if you look like you're a shopper vs a window shopper then they get a lot nicer. I ended up getting 2 purses from Louis Vuitton because I was in a hurry. They also have gourmet items such as chocolate-covered figs, macarons, olives, artisan chocolates, marzipan, olive oil, wine and other Spanish treats to bring home. They have everything making shopping very convenient and efficient. There's a taxi stand right outside Gucci which was great as my arms and legs were about to fall off from shopping overload. read more

And the customer service is great everyone is so helpful. It's easy to find things in the grocery store. You can also buy home goods and stationary. Definitely in great dt locale, near the Market. Great service, well-lit, and easy to use escalators. The ones that you don't need to 'wrap around' like those silly ones in the North American malls. Or Asia for that matter, but I digress. For the men's clothing section, your usual designer-brands, ie Boss, Armani, though you won't find Etro, or that other label that offers $5,000 suits, kinda drawing a blank at 4am local time haha. 8 floors? something like that...home division, electronics. What's remarkable is their dedicated floors to toys and sporting goods. And the only place in this area to use the washrooms for free, on the 2nd level by the luggage area. read more

This mall is huge--has everything for everybody but the true gem is on the top floor! This review is for El Corte Inglés that has 9 floors and is at the head of La Rambla. Skip the shopping and head straight to the 9th floor to the cafeteria for lunch or dinner. It is a food court style so you can choose what you'd like to eat from paella to tapas to Italian cusine and desserts. The food is reasonably priced and the seafood paella was one of the best I tried in Barcelona! Once you make your purchase you take your tray (or wheel your cart, your pick) into the seating area where you are surrounded by amazing views of the city! If you like views this is definitely the place to go. I visited a few times and I noticed most people in the cafeteria were locals so if you are in Barcelona for vacation, just this one time, make NOT like the locals and go during an off-beat time to get first dibs on seating (lunch before 1pm or dinner between 4 and 7pm). Spanish department superstore. This one in particular is HUGE. Multi-floor with almost everything available inside. There's a restaurant/cafe on the top floor which has decent views and the food isn't too bad. Head to the basement and they have a nice grocery store area. You can definitely find items here that you would not be able to find in the US (not surprisingly), assuming you can work out what it is!! If you need something in a pinch then this place should suffice. If you run out of things to do (pretty hard unless you are here for weeks) then you can walk around to pass some time. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy anything here, but truth be told it definitely did come in handy when we needed to pick up replacements for some very worn out traveling clothes. We went to the market underneath which seemed more expensive but pretty clean. We got some produce and water, and on our way out, we had to stop on the sausage stand ("Salgot"). We got a meat and cheese come for €3.70. For the first time, I tried Betara cheese, which is similar to Manchego but unique to Catalonia. There was also chorizo and sausage, both of which had a lot of flavor but a LOT of oil. It was by no means light but made a nice snack. read more
