This area is seriously lacking in delicious food and I couldn't be happier that El Gallo Dorado is helping fill the void. A must try for anyone looking for no frills Mexican. Everything people are saying about this place is true! Called this past Saturday with a large 10 person order said I needed it ready for 4 o'clock. Everything was packaged with care, no mistakes made and the food was all incredible we tried a little bit of everything on the menu. Okay for a hole in the wall fast food joint. Guacamole was good, didn't like the chips though, thick and over fried. Don't get shrimp (camarones), mine smelled like rotten seafood. Just tried for the first time tonight, rice was a bit salty and queso fundido didn't have much flavor but everything else was absolutely delicious. Guacamole was fresh and salsas were awesome. We got the mix tacos and shrimp chimichanga, huge portions and great prices. Definitely will be our go to Mexican place. read more

Nice low key spot that is going to the top of my lunch list in town. This was my first visit, I had the torta caliente, a sandwich with spicy pork, oaxaca cheese, avacado, pico and probably some stuff I'm forgetting because I ate it too fast. The pork was fantastic, just the right amount of heat. The rest of the toppings tied it all together and the bun was nice though a bit over-toasted but it didn't really detract from the sandwich. Can't wait to head back for some of the breakfast offerings and some tacos. read more

This place is great! Can't find anything better anywhere nearby. My wife and I are displaced Texans and have found it difficult to find good mexican food in the NE; specifically, we really miss Tex-Mex which has it's own distinct qualities, but it's one of the only types of food I feel qualified to review. I went with the chicken enchiladas verde (as I always do), my wife tried the tacos (steak and carnitas), and added a queso and chips appetizer. The enchiladas were absolutely delicious, a little sweet and a little spicy, very tasty. The tacos were well-prepared, the carnitas were moist and well-seasoned. The rice and beans that came with our orders was very good as well. Additionally, the queso was made with real cheese and the chips were home-made. That said, why would I give them a 4 and not a 5? Well, as a Texan I have high standards for mexican food. This place is comparable to something that would be attached to a gas station or small local market, which don't misunderstand: sometimes have awesome food, but it could still be better. Is it fair to hold a northern mexican restaurant to Texas standards? I don't have the answer to that one. So, what could be improved? Queso was a bit thin and should be a bit thicker, and the crumbed cheese put on top ended up feeling like curdled cheese in the soupy mix. Some of the chips were a bit stale, or had the feeling of soaking in oil for too long in spots, I also have a preference for thinner and less-filling chips (which also promotes customers to order more food). While the rice and beans with the meal were good, would be nice to have options. The steak in my wife's tacos was kinda dry and lacking flavor, it came with a sweet-smokey sauce that I think was meant to compliment the steak, but my wife doesn't use sauces. The tacos were topped with a pico de gallo which had cucumbers in it, which is a pet peeve of ours, cucumbers don't belong in salsa / pico, but we see it commonly since we moved to CT. For good examples of each of these, refer to Chuy's restaraunt chain, from my hometown of Austin, slowly creeping it's way up the east coast. read more

My wife and I love the food here. It's very authentic. Today we had the bistec a la Mexicana and enchilada's verde. The bistec is steak, rice, and bean. Solid meal. The enchilada verde are a little spicy for me but my wife loved it. This is a great place to cater your events. We had tacos (shrimp, steak, chorizo, chicken) with chips salsa and guacamole a few times this summer and it's always a hit. For catering order speak to Jesus he is easy to work with. read more

I think this is the best authentic Mexican food in Monroe...as good as the taco trucks off of I-95 in New Haven. I am so glad Monroe, where I live, now has a really good Mexican eatery. The only item I didn't care for was their guacamole fresco...I've had better. I haven't had their tortas or cemitas yet but will love to try next time. But their tacos, burritos, tostada, quesadillas and chimichanga are delish and they come with little containers of salsas. I wish they would include tortilla chips with every order...it's only with their guacamole fresco order. Anyway, I've ordered from here many times, love their food and will be returning. read more

We have lived in the area for several years, and only tried this amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurant last night. Ordered steak torta, steak burrito and chicken chimichanga for carryout and requested their spicy salsa. The torta had a good serving of steak and egg and a bunch of fixings and was pretty good. Chimichanga and the burrito were definitely worth ordering. The highlight for my spice loving family was the salsa. It elevated the taste of the food significantly. And, oh BTW, the dishes are priced right with a good amount of food. Definitely worth many more visits in the future. Helps to switch up our usual Thai or Chinese with Mexican! read more

Wow, I don't know how it took me so long to discover this place! Best kept secret in the area! Amazing Mexican food with great customer service. The chicken enchiladas with verde sauce and rice and beans were fresh and oh so good! Others ordered a taco salad, which was good but just know they use tortilla chips instead of a taco bowl but they tasted homemade and were great! Flautas and steak quesadillas were enjoyed by others as was all of their side sauces. Fantastic local gem for authentic Mexican food. I learned about this restaurant from my coworkers and finally got to try myself. Taco Al Pastor is one of my favorite Mexican street food and it is one thing I really miss from Los Tacos No. 1 in NYC. I was very excited to find this restaurant has that option. The moment I walked in, I knew I was in the right place - there was a small horizontal rotisserie behind the counter slowly roasting marinated pork with a pineapple on top and a huge iron grill with sizzling meats on top. It is a cute family operated business with the lady mainly in charge of the cashier role while the guy does most of the cooking. I had an order of Taco Al Pastor which comes in three pieces. They were made to order - after being thinly sliced from the rotisserie, the meat were placed on the grill to make sure it is thoroughly cooked and heated up piping hot. Two pieces of the soft corn tortilla shells were used to make one taco. They were drizzled in oil and heated up on top of the grill too. Then they get assembled, with fresh raw sweet onions, cilantro (I'm not a big fan of cilantro, I opted out), green salsa and some queso with a wedge of lime on the side. See, no lettuce, tomato, and definitely no crispy taco shell, etc. none of the typical Tex-Mex stuff is thrown in here. My tacos had very nice seasoning, perfectly balanced in salt and spices. I could definitely tell the pork was soaking up all that rich flavor from the marinate. I'd definitely be back for their Taco Al Pastor. read more
