Got dinner from this food truck recently and the food was OK but not great. We started with some chips and guacamole and were a bit disappointed by everything. The chips were stale and there just wasn't enough guac. I also got three tacos and they were overall kind of meh and didn't taste that fresh, while my wife got a quesadilla and was a little underwhelmed. "Very good tacos from a small restaurant (or food truck) in Durham" We just learned that the old "Libby's" restaurant on Hillsborough Rd is gone and that El Jefecito has taken its place, so we ordered some via DoorDash on a Saturday night. Most of us got tacos, though my wife also got a cheese pupusa. We were VERY impressed at the range of interesting taco choices. I'll rank our dishes below. 1: Fish tilapia taco. This came LOADED with toppings-- pan-seared tilapia, good helpings of slaw, remoulade sauce, and mango relish. I LOVED this. My daughter thought the fish could've been more seasoned, but I thought it was outstanding. 2: Steak tacos. Not quite fair that I'm ranking this one as #2 since my son got these and no one else tasted them (and he didn't taste others), but he liked it a lot. Good helpings, lots of peppers & onions, and a bit of horseradish. He reported the flavor of the beef was excellent-- almost like lamb. Maybe should be #1? 3: Cauliflower tacos. We were skeptical, but it was really good. My daughter actually liked this even more than the fish. "It didn't taste like cauliflower" is true, but the mix of the veggies and goat cheese was flavorful and yummy. I liked the fish more, but this was a solidly good choice. 4: Bulgogi tacos. We thought these would be beef, and I honestly still don't know what it was, but I doubt it was beef. The bulgogi spice was good. Good helpings of daikon and sriracha mayo. It had some kimchi, though I would've put more. It was decent. 5: Hash tacos. Potatoes, chili poblana, and more. It was "just OK". I wouldn't order this again. My wife found it a bit too spicy for her, but her spice tolerance is really low. 6: Cheese pupusas. The dough was fine, and the curtido was good, but the cheese inside literally seemed like a square of American cheese or Velveeta. Just no. Two things not listed-- the chicken tacos (my wife got them and liked them but didn't especially comment), and the churros (OMG THESE WERE AMAZING-- coated with delicious sugar!). Totally get the churros. Overall, this will DEFINITELY be joining our family takeout rotation. Overall, we're fans. Just avoid the cheese pupusas. read more

I didn't get the man's name but he showed me attention when I asked him a question and answered me promptly and respectfully. Then he handed me a plate of food that felt like it came from the neighborhood cookout. delicious, and fresh, food stayed hot for over an hour before I ate it. A paper plate wrapped in foil is what I hope for when I hit up a food truck and that's what I got today. Attended a foodie meet-up at Oden Brewing Company recently and I was super excited to try El Jefecito food truck! I couldn't say no to the 3 taco combo. Hard to choose from their vast variety but I somehow narrowed it down. Fish -- flavorful pan-seared tilapia littered with spicy jalapeño slaw, remoulade sauce and mango relish. Bulgogi -- mouthwatering pork marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, rice vinegar and ginger, smothered in kimchi, daikon, green onions and very tasty sriracha mayo. And Steak -- grilled strips of chipotle and spice rubbed steak, topped with pickled red onion, fennel, cucumbers and horseradish sauce. All were perfect. I could've eaten 6 more. So. Freaking. Good. Love the fresh corn tortillas here. Got a traditional 3 tacos for $10 (chorizo, Al pastor, steak). I was surprised that all of the tacos appeared to be ground meat. The steak was like a ground beef taco with grilled onion and pepper. We had guacamole and chips and I discovered that biting into the dry, hard stem of an avocado is similar to the ick of biting into an egg shell. Service wasn't great. I stood at the counter while the lady looked at me, turned around, drank her soda and took her time before taking my order. I tried to ask what Campechanos was and she totally ignored me. And this was the perfect lunch stop as I was driving through on I-85, delicious, convenient, fast food speed of service and restaurant flavor. I'm hooked! This location is very conveniently located between exits 173 & 170 on I-85. Easy off, easy on, and really not much time lost. Plus the food, which is all custom prepared for you, comes quickly. I had the veggie and chicken Gourmet Tacos, which were delicious. If I were a meat eater the steak, chorizo and pastor tacos looked good too. I had wondered about brick & mortar vs food truck. Tried El Jefecito's food truck parked outside House of Hops one Sunday afternoon. They are making everything as your order so it's fresh and hot! What an unexpected treat, with bold flavors and unexpected combinations. I went for three tacos for $10 ($11.83 after tax). I selected the steak, chicken and chorizo as my three tacos. I'd say the chicken ranked number one, followed by chorizo and steak last. They were all tasty, but I think I'd just order all chicken's next time because they were so good! Was able to modify several items on their menu for a family that doesn't eat meat or cheese and everything came out delicious! Chips were nice and crispy. Pico was nice and fresh. Got delivery from El Jefecito the second time we took advantage of Durham Delivers. Previously saw the menu and was thrilled with the inventive vegetarian options. The cauliflower burrito and tacos (cauliflower; pico; romesco sauce; and goat cheese) were both excellent though I probably could have done without the rice in the burrito itself. Hash tacos were really solid (veggie hash comprised of queso fresco; chipotle crema; and salad de nopal) and not a combination I've had before. This place has the worst tacos. We visited their Durham Bulls Stadium location & after paying $50 for 6 street-like tacos & 1 steak quesadilla - we will never return. The tacos we tried were chicken, chorizo, streak & bulgogi. You couldn't tell which was which because all of the meat is minced. Who likes minced meat tacos? Gross. Greasy. No flavor. They have some really fun flavor combos for tacos that you won't find anywhere else (and they also have the usual kinds of flavor combos for those who aren't adventurous). The burritos are amazing. OK - So I see "Food Truck" in the description - but I am reviewing their street location on Hillsborough Rd. - And no matter if it is a food truck, brick & mortar, or out of the trunk of a car- I am DEFINITELY eating here again! I have eaten here (a little ashamed to admit) over 10 times with my family. We have had most of the Taco options with the Chicken, Bulgogi, & Asada being the top 3 favorites. But Don't forget to also try the pupusas!! Heavenly! Enjoyed all 3 flavors- with the most delicious red sauce ever! I have not taken any pictures - because honestly when my kids bring the food home - I am as excited as a puppy to just dig in! Honestly very disappointed with this restaurant. We were the first ones in the restaurant and waited 45 minutes for 2 burritos and 1 churro. Our burritos were cold and ended up having not ONE but TWO long black hairs in my burrito. The last time my husband and I came here and ate in the restaurant, we were sitting down with friends near the register waiting for our food and the cashier broke a glass and the glass shards flew across the counter and they hit my husband and landed in his food and the workers didn't say anything to him but snickered on the other side. This was amazing - best Mexican we've had in a long time, including pre-Covid. The guacamole was fresh and tinged with lime. I had three tacos -- the meat was good, but the toppings were excellent. The apple corn relish on the El Pastor taco was spot on - delightful flavor and crunch. I especially liked the pineapple on the chorizo taco. Spouse had a chicken special dish whose name i can't remember, but the chef said was like a fried chicken. It included a spicy beet relish and lightly battered plantains. The plantains weren't sweet - but they were delish. We shared a Jamaica Agua Fresca, which was fantastic. I'm glad i didn't realize it was hibiscus flowers when i ordered it, because I don't like hibiscus tea - and the Jamaica beverage was the perfect compliment to the meal. Slightly tart, but not too tart, and not too sweet. Highly recommended - and so close to home. read more

Definitely a good food truck for the price. I ordered 3 tacos - pastor, chicken, and steak. I'd rank them as chicken, pastor, steak. The pastor meat was rather bland but the sauce it came with was really tasty and the green apple provided a nice sweet contrasting crunch. The chicken was the most flavorful and I loved the toppings on that one the most. Definitely leaps and bounds better than the other two. The steak was my least favorite and I wouldn't order it again. It didn't have much flavor and was the greasiest of the bunch. It was served with a wedge of lime which was nice and they also offered a tasty hot sauce and some sour cream (although they were out of that). They also ran out of guacamole which was sad. All in all, I would definitely look forward to their next visit to my work. I think next time I'll stick with a chicken taco and try the chips and guac if they have it. read more

Heard great things about this food truck so decided to drive from Durham to Holly Springs to try them at tapline brewery. They advertised to be there 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Upon arriving at 6:30pm, the lady was in the food truck and I asked if they were leaving and she said yes, I said I came from Durham with 5 people and she continued to pull off. I called and spoke with some guy and he said they were slow so they left. My husband and I used to chase the jefecito food truck around when it would serve buildings in the area around our office building bc the tacos were so good which is why we were stoked when they opened a brick and mortar. The new place is very unassuming but the food quality is as good as ever. I tried El Jeficito after spotting them at a local business and I'm usually skeptical of taco food trucks because my stomach for whatever reason, doesn't seem to tolerate them very well. I ate from this truck last Monday when they were parked outside of Ponysaurus Brewery. We each had chicken tacos and split a quesadilla. Honestly, the flavours weren't what I was expecting, but they mixed really well together. There was a tangy sweetness to them that was surprising but really good. Taking away one star for the corn tortillas of the taco since you can't really claim it's for authenticity when it's a fusion menu. The tortillas made it fall apart, they were out of forks, and so most of it went uneaten and fell on the ground. Messy but yummy. 4/5 would come back. read more
