If there were more stars I would give them. Avencio has been the top restauranter in El Medano for…read moreas long as I can remember - well over 30 years. Avencio (an Orotavense) has moved his restaurant twice For more than twenty years he managed a small, intimate, very typical fisherman's net-covered establishment in what was then a cul-de-sac just above the Plaza in this southern resort. Here he built up the kind of reputation that attracted diners from as far away as Santa Cruz or Los Gigantes. The food was piping hot and delicious; the atmosphere elegant, and the waiters nearly always bad-tempered but quick. With the coming of massive over-building everywhere, Avencio found new premises in the new Church Plaza, on the other side of town, but these proved unsuitable. The essential atmosphere was lost, and the cookery seemed to fade in quality. Now Avencio has taken over the Los Astilleros, a much smaller establishment just up the pedestrian-only lane which starts with the doomed Médano Hotel, and ends at the quay. Nautical-type windows at the ocean side look out on a marvellous view of the harbour, equally attractive by day or night. There are only around eleven tables for four or six, and one must book to avoid waiting or disappointment. The Menu, in several languages, is enormous. The pages are divided into Soups (average price 3.90 - 4.90 euros), Entremeses Frios (average price 6.30 - 7.00 euros), Entremeses Calientes (between 3 and 10 euros for the dearest dish); Fish including of course many varieties of fresh fish caught locally (averaging between 12 and 18 euros), Mariscos (Seafood, at prices between 13 and 28 euros, my goodness!), Meat with a huge range of specials including best fillet steak, at prices ranging between 7.50 and 13 euros, and Puddings (Postres). Oh and there are Especialidades such as Paella for two or more persons at 26 euros, Arroz Caldoso at 30 euros, and Zarzuela Marinera also at 30 euros. The latter is an enormous dish packed with every kind of fish and seafood you can think of, redolent of the sea, garlic and herbs, but you'd better be hungry (and rich). I recommend ordering the paella the day before, as it is slow cooked, and be on time or he will give out to you as if you were let to school ! But it is well worth it - easily the best paella you will taste. Avencio keeps some superb wines, but also serves local wines from around the islands, all of which are good value. Including wine, a good meal for two will cost under EUR50 including tip. Highly recommended
