Went today for the breakfast buffet. Really everything we ate, even the non-buffet items, were very good! The price is 12.99 for buffet which includes 5 types of protein : eggs, barbacoa, menudo, bacon, sausage. It also has potatoes with chorizo, tamales, gorditas, refried beans, pancakes, biiiig and buttery flour tortillas, and a seasonal drink, which today was champurrado (sooo sweet and perfect) I tried a bit of everything and truly the food was amazing!! The service was great, fast seating and service. Ambiance and cleanness was also good! Definitely coming back and will recommend! Service was fast but I needed a translator to communicate not only with my waitress but to read the menu that is printed in Spanish. I stuck with enchiladas, a word that I recognized which were truth be told very good served with fresh rice & beans and a side of chopped lettuce and tomato. Great service. Weekday buffet runs from about 11:30 until two. They had a soup with chicken and Fidello, flautas, mole, rellenos, beans & rice. Dessert included various cookies and Mexican breads and rice pudding. $11.99 includes a drink. We enjoyed the flautas, beans n rice, but our favorite was the rice pudding topped with walnuts and raisins! Oh man, just as good as my grandma made! My husband had the relleno stuffed with picadillo (ground meat n potatoes) off the menu. He liked it but we prefer rellenos made with Hatch green chile to the poblanos used here. This is the second time I visit this restaurant. My total honest opinion of this place is that, for what it is, it is way overpriced. There are a multitude of Mexican restaurants in Brownsville. We paid $25 for two of us. My friend had two gorditas and a coffee. I had potato and egg plate that came with some beans and I also had a lemonade. $6.99 for my potato and egg. $2.99 for my artificial lemonade. The egg in my potato and egg order was over cooked. The beans were just ok. The service was average. Most likely I won't return to this place nor will I recommend it to others. Merely because, like I said, there are plenty of other restaurants in the area like it with better food, better prices and just as good or better service. read more

The parking lot is full, there's a line to get in, and every table is taken - that's all you need to know to realize this place is amazing! Having never been here before, and not speaking much Spanish, our server Nora took care of all of our needs! I had the Mexican eggs w flour tortillas and coffee. My friend had the shredded beef stuffed tortilla! Both perfectly prepared and so flavorful! Oh and the beans were some of the best I've ever had! The sweetbreads were fresh and perfect for a starter w a hot cup of coffee! I can't say enough good things about this place! Stop scrolling and go here! You will not be disappointed! read more

Went to this restaurant by accident and what a happy encounter it turned out to be. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast. It started with coffee and a basket of bakery rolls. I ordered eggs mexicana with a homemade flour tortilla (to die for!). My husband had the breakfast special and he said it was delicious. Serve was outstanding! Restaurant is neat, clean and very comfortable--well-maintained property. Highly recommend. read more

I'm not from Brownsville, so I love trying out new places. Came across this place via yelp and saw the reviews so decided, why not. They have sanitizer available as soon as you walk in and surroundings look clean. It's a quaint location. Looking at the menu, you'll se me they have the usual mexican breakfast plates, tacos, etc. The prices however do not match. Large taco by itself cost close to 7 dollars. A little overpriced for it just being bacon and egg. When my food arrived, the taco was huge, or should I saw my flour tortilla was massive, but unfortunately there was more tortilla than egg/bacon itself. Taste was good just the prices were too much for something I can get elsewhere for 3-4 dollars. read more

We had breakfast here today. "El Mesquite" is an authentic Mexican restaurant that specializes in authentic Mexican breakfast and Lunch dishes only. Amazing service with an unbelievable value! They served us coffee with complimentary Mexican sweet breads while we selected our dishes. The waitress recommended the Breakfast buffet for only $7.99! (Attached photo is everything that comes with the buffet) Breakfast Buffet includes a round of flap-jacks, eggs, and coffee, with an assortment of other foods at the walkup buffet that you can replate yourself such as Menudo, barbacoa, beans, Mexican potatoes with chorizo and grilled onions, tamales, bacon, gorditas, chicharon en salsa verde... you get the idea! What is so remarkable about this restaurant is not just that the service is bad (there are lots of places that have terrible service), but it's the utter contempt and disdain the servers have for their customers. They treat you as a nuisance--an unwelcome houseguest that has barged into their homes and demanded to be served. This review is not based on one or two visits, but years of frequenting this restaurant. It's such bizarre behavior, I'd almost recommend at least one visit to experience that alone. Great authentic Mexican food! I recommend their tortilla de harina con desebrahada guisada. Their plates are very well served so the price is worth it. You also get complementary sweet bread when you go for breakfast which is nice! Only reason why I don't give them 5 stars is because the wait staff is hit and miss. Not many places earn or even deserve 5 stars here in the valley.. but el mesquite is truly one of those holes in the walls that deliver. For once a restaurant that makes food made to order.. nothing precooked. Definitely the most freshest vegetables I've ever received from a local mexican restaurant. Freshness is 2nd to none. I used to eat at this restaurant all the time. I went just recently and was surprised at how much the bill came out to. I ordered a tortilla de harina with machacado con huevo, my dad had a tortilla also with bacon and egg, and the third person had pan cakes, and three coffee's. That's it. The food was ok, but they no longer make the original salsa guisada that they used to serve with chips which was awesome now they have this orange junk they give you that no one likes. When you ask for water, they give you from the tap, uhh, Brownsville recaca water I think. Awful! These days a lot of restaurants are giving people good water. I would think that El Mesquite being that they are making so much money with their breakfast, that they could at least, give their customers the same water I am sure they themselves drink when they are at home. I have them three stars also, b/c the waitress was like blahhh. No personality at all, just very robotic. This will probably be the last time I go to this restaurant there are a lot of others restaurants out there, and Brownsville is growing, I'm excited to see what is going to be available. read more
