Things have changed completely and NOT what I expected. I was expecting authentic and true Mexican food. They have came from California (where we have moved from as well) where the Mexican food was real and authentic. We swore of this place! So why not order from them again. We ordered the birria wet burrito and cheese enchiladas. However, the birria burrito was burnt and had no birria sauce. The cheese enchiladas were NOT was I was expecting, nor what I ordered. We wanted traditional birria burritos and enchiladas. The enchiladas were covered in cheese sauce and tortillas were raw. I don't know what has changed, but it isn't the same. It did not taste the same, nor did it have that feeling of love for the food as it did a year ago when we had eaten there plenty of times. Where is the authentic spices, cheeses and sauces? Where is the love and authenticity from traditional California that you have brought over here for others to enjoy? It is no longer there. This was a little piece of California that we missed and loved and it is sad to say that we will not be back. You were our little piece of home and now that has changed. When staying true to our roots and delivering exceptional taste and authenticity, will bring costumers back and keep them happy. Changing cheeses to mozzarella, and salsa into bland tomato paste is not what I expected and beginning to look and taste like all the mexican restaurants out here. This location is in a shared plaza with plenty of parking. The decor inside has some lovely murals. It has a bright feel. I went at an odd time so was able to get a table quickly. The service was decent. The food was also decent. I got the chicken tacos and the chicken was a little dry. I liked the jaimica. The salsa for the chips and salsa was good. I stopped in to El Monarca in Nixa, MO for lunch today, I got their Street Tacos . I ordered them À la carte to try a variety. I got a Carne Asada, Chorizo, Carnitas, and two Al Pastor tacos because that's usually my favorite. All of them were excellent and they have a red sauce and two green sauces, all full of flavor and packing an added kick the perfect complement for the tacos. Decided to try some places outside of Springfield. There is absolutely no shortage of Mexican food in our area, but hey that's what we like, and we also like to support small businesses. We took a trip to Nixa and stopped in at this little dinner. At one point not long ago it was another cafe. Anyway parking is very tight, and angled a bit weird. I wouldn't recommend taking a party bigger than four of five since seating is limited and space is small! The service was very attentive, and had good recommendations. The menu was extremely large for how small the place was. I settled on a couple Sopas, and the wife had a kinda shredded chicken sandwich. My Sopas were okay, the pork was really tasty! My wife's sandwich on the other hand wasn't too great. The juice had made the bottom of the bread extremely soggy, and the chicken had almost a molé or tobacco flavor "eww." The owner came and spoke to us; he was extremely nice! It's just really difficult to open a great Mexican restaurant now a days because there are so many. You have to either provide something original or amazing, unfortunately you won't find either of those things here. Okay food at a little high prices. I was expecting a great experience from this place, based on the positive reviews. But, I would not recommend this place. First, they brought me the wrong food, and then they brought me the wrong check. They also brought out half of my order about 10 minutes before the rest of my food was finished cooking. Why would they not bring my order all together? My daughter's cheese quesadilla was cold and the cheese wasn't melted. I would recommend going to Habaneros on Campbell instead. My family took me here for my birthday this year and I was delightfully surprised at the ambience of the restaurant. It is Christmas time so they had Hispanic Christmas music playing which was perfect to help put me in the holiday mood. My family is originally from California and find it difficult to find Mexican food close to what we grew up on but this was the closest yet and absolutely delicious! My brother and I had the big chimichanga, they were HUGE so I had plenty of leftovers. The dish itself was perfection and I highly recommend it. My son who usually only likes soft tacos from Mexican restaurants had chicken enchiladas, cleaned his plate, and said they were great. Without a doubt, my favorite Mexican place. I am known to eat Mexican food three or four days a week at times. Mr. G and his staff have provided exceptional customer service every single visit. My favorite part about them is there flexibility. If it's not a dish represented on the menu, but they have the ingredients, They will create anything you want. That works well for me since I'm on a fairly restrictive diet and cannot eat rice or beans. They do not wish to be known as the cheapest Mexican joint in town, but rather the best. They have by far the best Mexican food in Southwest Missouri. I cannot recommend them enough. I am from Southern California and have been bitterly disappointed by the "Mexican" food in the area. El Monarca is like eating at my favorite Mexican establishment in SoCal. The staff is very friendly. They are quick to offer advice on food, and they have never led me astray. Their dad works in the back and hand prepares all the deliciousness. The establishment itself is bright and clean, but honestly, I would eat there even if it were a dump. The food is that good. Growing up in California I am used to "California Mexican" and I thought I would never find it in Missouri after trying many other joints only to be disappointed. I FINALLY found it at this restaurant. Food has tons of flavor and the chili relleno was one of the best I ever had. Chicken enchilada was so flavorful. Couldn't get hubby's opinion on taco salad cause he couldn't stop eating long enough. Its a very quaint hole in the wall but will be our go to place when we want good Mexican food.
