When we visited Cancun, we decided to drive to Chichen Itza on our own on the toll highway (180D). As suggested, we were always on the look out for gas and food (although we planned to stop in a local town off of the highway). In this case, we left for CI early to beat the tourist rush. We also ate a meh meal for breakfast and were getting pretty hungry.
Suddenly, a rest stop appeared. This is the only rest stop that I can recall in Mexico that is similar to ones you can find in the US; built in the middle of the highway, connecting both directions of traffic. There was gas, food, and bathrooms. (There was even a gift shop inside). We were game.
The food looked questionable, a few offerings here and there behind glass and a bunch of tables. But, when in Mexico.....
We enjoyed it. A lot more so than what we had on the strip. I had the sopa de limon which was the best I had during the entire trip. The family had tacos and empanadas. Overall, pretty good. What amused us even more was when busloads of employees from Chichen Itza's resort stopped by for food. I guess we were on to something.
Warning in advance. The restrooms are typical gas station style restrooms. They are plentiful but a little murky. Bring your own wipes in case. Also, the men's room stalls are situated by a back stair case so you can see in/out. Bizarre.
