This is a good place for northern Spanish food near the Plaza de Espana. You can make reservations online, which is a good idea, as the place gets crowded. I liked that most of the guests were Spanish speakers. The menu is fairly self-explanatory, but it's better if you are able to read Spanish (not a problem for me!). Service was fast. The food was generally good, although the seafood rice was fishy, and the sangria was not memorable at all. But the fried calamari was delicious, and my family enjoyed the jamon iberico. 11/28/21 - I walked in yesterday in the afternoon looked around & told the hostess I would be back later w/my espousa. I came back later that night on (Saturday night & Txapela was packed. No more seatings for that night. I don't know if you've ever been to Madrid. It was my first time in Madrid & the streets on Saturday night were packed w/wall to wall people. When you walk into Txapela there is a hostess table @ the entry. There is a bar where many of the Tapas options are displayed behind & under the glass w/the back open for servers to access the tapas options. They are all beautifully displayed & it's like an adult in a candy store w/the multitude of options. These are awesome for getting many different options & sharing them so you can get a taste of multiple choices. Well we finally made it here Monday night (it's only about 1 block from my hotel) to come & try some of the beautifully presented options & yes they tasted better then they looked. Really glad we ended up wandering into this restaurant when we were looking for a place to eat. All of the tapas we tried were delicious. It looked like a super casual touristy place from the outside but so glad we decided to just give it a try. The only reason I knocked off a star is because I feel you have to be aggressive/ assertive with the inefficient waiter. My husband and I went with our baby and the stroller. The waiter put our name down on the waitlist. I said we'll wait outside since the place was crowded. While waiting, we saw people coming in and getting seated before us. This is an OK tourist trap restaurant with good hours and cheap breakfast. I stopped in one morning for a jamon iberico and coffee, and they were fine. The ambiance is cheesy, like they're trying to be an old fashioned bar but are really new. Service was not great. One night, I stopped in for a glass of wine and also ordered a water. The waitress never brought me a water but charged me for a bottled water. Then she got annoyed when I asked her to take it off the bill, insisting that she would give me the water then, 30 minutes after I'd ordered it, to take with me when I left. It was particularly annoying because the other time I went, the server simply gave me a free glass of water when I asked for water.
