Half chicken, on the side is charro beans, salsa, and rice

Oh my gosh. I think this is the absolute best chicken spot in KCK and in the US!! They have great service(speaks both English and Spanish). They charred the chicken to perfection and they complete the food with salsa, rice, and charro beans. The place is very family friendly and the vibe of the restaurant is very nice!! This is will be a regular for my family!!

Still my favorite chicken in the KC area. Plenty of seating. The menu is simple but effective. The staff is friendly. The chicken is delicious and moist. The frijoles charros are authentic and very flavorful.

We were doing our day of taking various items to recycle (electronics, styrofoam, household, etc) and were in the vicinity of El Pollo Rey. It was 3:30 and the place had a steady stream of people dining. Like the other reviewers have stated - this place does one thing really well and perfects it - - CHICKEN. You are drawn in by the wonderful seasoned smoke from the grill. They have whole and half chicken and wings. The chicken is served very quickly & very hot! The skin is crispy not burnt and the white & dark meat is very moist. I am not a bean person so I cannot attest to that side. You also get soft corn tortillas, rice and sauce. I would have liked a little more flavor on the sides, but that won't detract me from coming back in the future. Clearly this is the place to go and wish them all the best.

Oftentimes my spouse and I casually joke about boring choices for dinner by asking each other, "chicken or chicken?" Turns out, chicken is no laughing matter at El Pollo Rey; it is the "king" for a reason. You get 3 options: whole, half, or wings. It comes with corn tortillas, beans, rice, pickled red onion, and fresh salsa. It took us two tries and a bit of strategy to make it before they sold out but that's basically what days off and weekends are for, right?!? The sides are good, for sure, but the star of the establishment is the chicken (duh). Come prepared to eat with your hands and you will be glad you did because you will get to smell the lingering aroma even after you drive away. So when you find yourself asking, "chicken or chicken," you have your answer, Kansas City.

5/5 This food was so good. Simple, tasty, and amazing . Simple vibes, simple menu, great hospitality, and food

This place is a gem - solid food, good prices, what more could you want? I got the whole chicken, which was grilled to perfection and served hot to the table. It comes with tortillas, beans, rice, salsa, and some pickled onions. Simple meal but tasted fantastic. Food came out pretty quick which I appreciated. Plenty of tortillas for the meat, and I didn't think that there was anything missing. Definitely the highlight was the grilled chicken, which had a good smoky flavor without being burnt or overcooked. Will definitely return (and there's also plenty of other authentic Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood too). Keep in mind the hours, since they do close a bit earlier than other places.

I am from out of State and was referred to try this place out. Glad I did. Their menu is simple... whole chicken, half chicken, or buffalo wings. I got an order of the half chicken that came with rice, beans and tortillas. The chicken was full of smokiness flavor. I enjoyed it. I wish I ordered their wings though!!

Living in South…read moreFlorida influenced me to learn much more about Latin foods which are much more diverse than Mexican. I've had a very hard time finding much Latin diversity here so far but for Mexican this is quite good. I've mostly gotten combo platters because I like the variety. I believe every combo platter should come with rice and beans. I can tell how authentic a place is by the beans and salsa quite often. So far I've liked the combo platters and the taco salad that I tried. Again, if I remember correctly, I had to pay extra to get beans on my taco salad. That would be one complaint I have. Beans should be a staple and come with everything unless the person doesn't want them. The service has been good. No complaints and it's been busy when we've eaten there usually during lunch hours. The decor and ambiance is pretty typical Mexican. Nothing fancy. The one thing I will note is I didn't see any Mexicans working there. Maybe someone in the kitchen I can't see so that's usually not a great sign. I know they've been around a long time. I'd probably go a smidge lower to 3.5 if I could just because I'm rather picky about Mexican and Latin food but I don't think it's fair to go down to 3 so I'm rounding up. The prices seem a bit high but everything is so expensive in 2026! They are probably pretty average for eating out and I'm sure it's costing them more just like all the rest of us have seen food prices sky rocket over the past year. I would certainly recommend them for a lunch bite and a nice Mexican American experience.

They had no idea we were coming and had to hustle a few tables together once we arrived. The service is still slow. The food and salsa are still bland. I didn't even get to enjoy one of their margaritas (the only item really worth ordering), as I had to go to work following dinner. My vegetarian combo (burrito and chile relleno with beans and rice) were as plain as I-70 in western Kansas. I think the food was even more uninspired than my last visit. It took forever to order, forever to get our food, and then some items came out late or required prompting to procure. I just don't understand why people love this place. I think they just get drunk on the margs and *think* the food is good. Do not come here if you enjoy anything but bland food.
