So this is a grocery store and restaurant and food to go I use them for all three they've got the great selection of produce and they always have beautiful avocados I can say that their meat in the back you can get and cook at home is fantastic especially the chorizo. Finally stopped by after hearing nothing but positives about it! I mean... your girl loves a taco, but getting over to the KS side delayed me. I'm so disappointed in myself for not making the drive sooner! I decided to try a assortment of tacos! Asada, Pastor, Barbacoa, Carnitas, and Chorizo. Honestly, they were all delicious. HOWEVER, the Pastor took the win for sure. The marinate on the pork is truly there! You can taste that it is seasoned well, which makes the simplicity of a street taco so delicious. Great options for meatless eaters and pescatarians. Yummy potato tacos and delicious bean tostadas. The portions were big enough for two people to eat. I love the pickled Jalapeños, but it seems like they are always almost out of them. Get there early for dinner rush or you will definitely be in line. The REAL DEAL people! You know it's going be good when you order in English and the employee struggles to understand you. I really really wish I knew Spanish! Anyone have tips on how they learned Spanish? Anyway, back to the food. The street tacos were some of the best I've had in the area. The meat comes folded in two tasty corn tortillas and are filled to the brim with meat. You can add onion and cilantro (a must in my opinion), and they have a variety of sauces. I contemplated giving this place 4/5 because their meat selection was running low, but that was my fault, not theirs. I came in later in the evening. I view this as a sign that they have a lot of customers and that I'm onto something good. If you want a better selection I'd recommend coming earlier in the day. We got there around 7:30-8pm. Don't worry, I'm coming back for you barbacoa! The restaurant is located in a shopping market, so it's likely that you'll catch a whiff of the butchers meat in the back. This is the sister store to the Olathe location. Much like that location, this store is part grocery store, butcher and in house taco / Mexican diner. Also, like the Olathe location, I'm going to focus on the tacos because that's where the magic happens. You'll see the counter off to the right when you enter. Then you'll line up cafeteria style. Once you reach the front, you will tell the employee behind the counter how many tacos you want, what kind of tacos those will be and whether you want onions and cilantro (please say yes.) Other dishes and sides are available, but I like to stick to the basics. If you're dining in, there's a sauce bar just beyond the counter. If you're getting your meal to go, the employees will throw in a small container green sauce and orange sauce. Beware, the orange sauce is hot enough to make you stop smelling for a bit. Like I've mentioned before, I'm more into the tacos, but if you're looking for some special spices or ingredients for something you're cooking they're probably here. Bonito Michoacan is an unassuming little Mexican grocery store. It has what you can find in a typical grocery store: produce, meat, snacks, and household goods. It also sells piñata. The best thing about Bonito Michoacan though is its taqueria inside. The street tacos cost either $1.49 or $1.99 depending on the meat option you choose, and some of them are discounted to $1 on Tuesdays. There is carne asada, al pastor, lengua, discada, barbacoa, chicharrón, carnitas, birria de res, pollo, tripa, and borrego. My favorites are the carne asada, al pastor, and barbacoa. The meats are tender and flavorful, and the tacos are always hot. Combine that with some salsa, and you have a simple meal that is just so delicious. Aside from tacos, there are burritos, tamales, and other dishes on the menu. The tacos are so delicious that I always order them and have not tried anything else on the menu, but I am sure they are just as good as the tacos. The ordering process is extremely simple. You get in line, place your order, move down the line until you reach the register, and then pay. After paying, head to the salsa bar, load up on the different salsas, grab a seat, and then eat. Just be careful not to go overboard on the salsas, because some of them have a very nice kick to them. Remember to clear your trash when you are done eating, because this is a self-service place. If you want dessert after your meal, Bonito Michoacan has a bakery across the street. The taqueria is a busy place, especially during peak dining hours, but the line moves really quickly. I was in the mood for some authentic street tacos and made the drive to Bonito Michoacán. Overall, it is very authentic and delicious. I got 4 street tacos (2 asada and 2 al pastor), complete with 2 tortillas per taco and topped it off with onion and cilantro. I lived in East LA for 2 years and so I've had many street tacos, I'd say this place ranks in the top third. The al pastor was not as good as I've had elsewhere, it was a little dry. Other than that, they were solid street tacos. The place is inside and next to a supermarket. I went during dinner hours and it was fairly busy, maybe a 10 minute wait to go through and get your food. Lots of Mexican families as well as multiple ethnicities coming in for food. The lady spoke English well, no issues with ordering anything. A great place to try if you are in the mood for some cheap street Mexican food. I recommend the light green (almost avocado looking) salsa on your tacos, it is a little spicy though. read more

Inspired by the recent Yelp Taco Crawls, as well as coming off a disappointing experience at a generic suburban Mexican restaurant, I knew it was time to get over to Bonito Michoacan to finally try out the legendary tacos. This authentic gem on Minnesota Ave in KCK was packed on a Sunday afternoon. Their taco menu could truly stand alone, but the rest of the menu had me making mental notes for next time while I waited in line (I see you, Chile Relleno..). I went with a few of my favorites, the Asada, a couple Pastor, and a barbacoa. Each one is perfection in a double lined corn tortilla. Simple. Authentic. Flavorful. Legendary. I love the addition of a heavy dosage of cilantro and onion on top, and while these tacos can stand alone, I had to feed my hot sauce/salsa addiction on at least one of them. I'd be totally lying if I could tell you what was in the green sauce I put on one of my tacos, but it tasted fantastic and had just enough kick. I dared to try the dangerous looking, hot orange sauce and it was not for me. Four of these tacos, at $1.49 is about the best value for quality food that I've found in a while. It's also more than enough as I was stuffed after eating it. We perused the market a bit and loved seeing all the baked Mexican goodies and things that you can't find at the local Hen House. While it's a bit of a trip for me to get here (~25 minute drive), it's definitely on my mind for a return trip. For what it's worth, this wildly authentic taco shop/bodega is affordable, fast-ish, and just good enough. I wouldn't go out of my way for a taco anytime soon, because the neighborhood is a bit on the sketch side. But the Al Pastor is great, and their sauces are really clean and hot! The Asada during my visit tasted like plastic, and the carnitas were bland. But the tortilla's were right where they needed to be to make it all pull together. You'll stand in line for quite some time on the busy days - which seems like always. But when you get to the window, it's over fast, and then you're eating. You pay at the counter in the grocery store, next to the bubble gum and cigarettes - a bit weird, but bodega's are like that. Our new running joke for this spot is; cuatro or cinco tacos as we just love everything here. These are the double tacos with a good heaping of amazing meats so to pack away five of these bad boys does not take maximum effort but common sense may prevent it (not really). Of the entrées I have had they were well worth it but always feel bad if I do not get a street taco from here. They have hands down the best carnes in town, I would encourage anyone coming here to vary from the usual suspects; I like the cheek (not that one) the beef cheek here is amazing as well as tongue (lengua). Some of the textures of items like the pork skin or tripe (tripia) may be off putting but the flavor is definitely an experience and one not to be missed.They have what I refer to as the usual suspects (Asada, Carnitas, Barbacoa and Al Pastor) down to a science for maximum flavor and never dried out, there inventory rotates so fast I doubt this would ever be a problem. They have a pretty good system as they are always grilling the shells for the tacos so its at a good temp for the meat. A good add-on to your meal is the grilled leeks or peppers, they are more for flavor than anything else. If you see something interesting try it by all means try it as this place is oozing with authenticity and I am yet to have anything here I did not like. Just be careful with the sauce bar as if you are not familiar you may end up having to drench your tacos in another sauce in order to cover up a mistake (swear it was not me and really a friend). To complete your meal especially if you took a bunch of the extra spicy sauces the fried bananas with cream and cheese is amazing. The Gorditas are also worth a try as they are made in-house and are perfect for pastor and carnitas. I would also recommend things like the Parrillada Mexicana which is sausage, steak onions and peppers grilled to perfection; I think it was the only thing I ate that entire day as that portion was pretty filling. I also like walking around after with the grade horchata it lasts way past the meal. This place gets five stars for me because I have never had anything here that was not amazing, it is filled with authenticity and I get truly excited with just the thought of going here that I start salivating. read more

But when I was waiting outside for my friend across the street, an old Hispanic man standing outside Bonito, waved at me to get of here. I walked up in a friendly way and asked if there was a problem. He said I can't just stand around (as if I loitering. But I had literally been there for 2 minutes). I said I'm here for tacos. He said you have 5 minutes; go get your tacos and leave. I said but my friend is not here yet, I'm waiting for him. He didn't want to hear it. I asked him if he worked at Bonito. At least if he was the manager or something he may have the right to not want "my kind" around his establishment. He of course would not answer. I don't get it. I'm a pretty understanding person. The street tacos are $1.99 or $1.49 which is a steal of a deal for what you get. I came here the other day for lunch with a friend and he ordered 4 tacos and I ordered 5 tacos...my brain was hungrier than my stomach; 4 tacos from this place is plenty! The tacos come double wrapped in fresh small corn tortillas and you can fill them with your choice of deliciously cooked, marinated, braised, and roasted Mexican style meats. I had two carnitas tacos, two al pastor tacos, and one chorizo taco; and, all of them deserve 5 stars! My personal favorite of the tacos was the al pastor, small marinated pieces of pork heaven in some type of pineapple/red sauce...AMAZING! The carnitas were also quite tasty as was the chorizo. The goodness doesn't stop at the tacos though because the variety of salsas that they prepare at Bonito Michoacán are simply superb! The three that stand out in my mind are: the salsa verde, a green avocado salsa, and a creamy red hot salsa! OMG my mouth is watering even thinking about this (see pictures below)! My friend and I commented to each other that these were the best tacos that we had ever had! I think that is saying something seeing that I am from San Francisco and he is from New York! If it isn't tacos that you are in the mood for, Bonito Michoacán has plenty of other items to choose from, like burritos, traditional gorditas, lamb stew, menudo, etc. The line here may be long at lunch but it moves fast!
