The first had included honey, but it wasn't sweet--just complexified with a little snap to it that the honey smoothed; the second was a little sweeter in tone, including a bit of huckleberry along with the mezcal. (Connor might recall them by my play name for them. Inspired by a book in my hand on collecting meteorites, I nicknamed the first the "Extraterrestrial Visitor" and the second the "Heavenly Visitor.") They were so delicious I suggested he put them on the menu. If he does or doesn't, no matter. Just ask him if he has time to get creative for you. He'll ask you flavor tone preferences, or you can just go for whatever he wants to make, like I did. Again, he is excellent. I enjoyed my lovely drinks with a Caesar salad (another OMG!) which included crispy bacon bits and loads of tiny shreds of a delicious white cheese along with a creamy dressing. It was scrumptious as was the very lovely charcuterie plate. Pistachios, green apple slices, fat outstanding Castelvetrano olives (caution: with pits), a luscious pepper jelly that went beautifully dipped into with their choice of excellent crackers, delicately flavored salami and a prosciutto so elegantly-flavored it could make you weep. When I came back out, the bartender gave me the most disgusted look and said something like, "Really? You guys went into a single stall bathroom together? Really?" I was honestly confused and immediately apologized and said I didn't know that wasn't allowed. Instead of just explaining it, she responded with, "How do you not know that? That's common sense?" and then implied it was a drug or sex thing. I genuinely did not know that, and there were no signs posted saying only one person was allowed in the bathroom (that I saw). I've also been coming here for years and have never been talked to about this before. The way she handled it felt super rude and embarrassing. A simple "Hey, just so you know, that's not allowed here" would have been totally fine. She then said she could still serve us, but by that point I felt really uncomfortable. I apologized for the drink she had already made and said we were going to head somewhere else. Her response was a very rude "Okay, bye!" I've worked in food service for 5 years and I would never talk to a customer like that, especially when they clearly didn't know they were doing anything wrong. Staff and service are fabulous. It does get super busy at times, so be aware and be patient. Red Star has a fabulous patio, which is all ages, while inside seating is 21+ only. Groups and couples will both be comfortable in the causal and welcoming atmosphere. Red Star is located in the old Trolley / Greyhound station in Bellingham and pays homage to the history with large prints of times gone by. The restrooms have been updated to single occupancy, non-gendered rooms with a common handwashing area. Plenty of thought went into the updates Red Star implemented, while preserving historical architecture. The food is not traditional Mexican, many of the tacos are notably untraditional; including options such as the deluxe bacon cheeseburger taco. Vegans, veggies, and meat eaters will all be able to find a dish to meet their needs. My personal favorites are the Baja fish for dine in and a tofu burrito to go, my husband like Dad's and the cheeseburger taco. It is a great menu and the rotating specials keep it fresh.
