Walk along the Embarcadero & get a freeze on a hot day, stop by Chilanga's (the best booth there) & get my huitlacoche on. Live music, shade, delicious vendors, right across from the water. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

There was live music and aa few food stalls. Good Eatz (filipino/hawaiian fusion) caught my eye mainly because they have a few Ube pastries (mochi, ube bar, etc). I first ordered the ube bar which passed the test so I went back to order the mochi. They also offer lumpia, spam musubi and chicken wing combo plates and pork dumplings.

It's very much self service here, you order either at a tablet or through your phone via QR code. We got a Mac and cheese dog, chili dog, SDfoodie dog, and the California. Along with the corn and cheese fries. I had the chili dog which is delicious and the California which I loved! The hot dogs are great quality and so good! I also love the cheese and fries, soooo tasty. The bun was a little big for me, but my fiancee loved it. It was a large brioche bun that was toasted nicely. The prices were around 9-11 for a dog which isn't horrible. If your in the mood for a fun and filling hot dog, this is a great choice!

I even remember when it was a participating vendor at a now defunct local food festival. Their current location is a corner shack in the East Village section of downtown next to The Church by The Lost Abbey. Everything in this area involved curbside metered parking or a paid surface lot. The shack was part of a large courtyard with multiple picnic tables for seating. Cornhole boards and a flat screen TV were set up for entertainment. You order using a tablet next to the service window. The menu used to be strictly bacon-wrapped hot dogs (i.e. Sonoran style). It has now expanded to include burgers, sides, appetizers, and desserts. A fountain station had dispensers for sodas, lemonade, and agua frescas. The hot dogs were divided into two sections, Classic and Signature. I selected two of the classics for my takeout order. The first was a Baja (grilled onions, pico, chipotle, avocado crema) and the second was a TJ Style (grilled onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, ketchup). The sweet bun used to hold everything resembled that used for a lobster roll. The flavor combinations were hearty and not spicy which was what I preferred. The grilled onions added some char and texture to the jumbo beef hot dogs. What has changed significantly over time were the prices. Each of my choices cost $8.99. Some of the other varieties were as high as $12 which is insane for a loaded hot dog. I did appreciate the bacon wrapping to the franks, but I can't see myself coming to East Village that often for these products because there are plenty of diverse dining options that are more satisfying in this part of downtown.

Most of what they have available is frozen but if you call ahead they will have something hot ready for you to pick up. While all the pies have been delicious (and we have tried almost all of them), after several visits we have some favorites: cottage pie (mashed potato upper "crust" - YUM!), steak and cheese pie, and chicken pot pie. The sausage rolls are also excellent, a good choice for an easy hearty breakfast. The Scotch egg was also good. I am used to semi soft ramen eggs and for the scotch egg the egg is cooked very hard - something to be aware of.

Luckily, they still had quite a few options available, like chicken curry and ricotta spinach, they even had a vegan flavor. We ended up getting the lamb rosemary and beef mushroom meat pies. They were on the smaller side, hand-held snacks, but quite filling. They were served warm, generously filled with saucy ground meat, good enough flavor (not my favorite taste, that onion gravy was a little too intense in the beef mushroom pie), and a light flaky crust. Would have preferred something different on their menu, but again, they ran out.
