I sometimes get wistful passing by the dirty dog carts. They always smell so great and I can't help but feel saddened sometimes by not being able to partake. So, I can't express how much it meant to me to see a plant based option on this menu when I passed by at the OB Farmers market. AND it was cheaper than the regular options!! Only $5! I thought maybe it was a mistake or outdated but when they rang me up, it really was only $5- for something just as loaded as the regular version. I'm used to seeing vegan options being the more expensive option, so this was really appreciated. The veggie dogs were great. If I could get this again, I'd probably skip the chorizo or ask for half as much because it was pretty salty. They definitely leave some seeds in the jalapeños so skip that if you can't handle heat. I enjoyed Doggos Gus back when it was a pop-up business located inside a University Heights neighborhood bar. I even remember when it was a participating vendor at a now defunct local food festival. Their current location is a corner shack in the East Village section of downtown next to The Church by The Lost Abbey. Everything in this area involved curbside metered parking or a paid surface lot. The shack was part of a large courtyard with multiple picnic tables for seating. Cornhole boards and a flat screen TV were set up for entertainment. You order using a tablet next to the service window. The menu used to be strictly bacon-wrapped hot dogs (i.e. Sonoran style). It has now expanded to include burgers, sides, appetizers, and desserts. A fountain station had dispensers for sodas, lemonade, and agua frescas. The hot dogs were divided into two sections, Classic and Signature. I selected two of the classics for my takeout order. The first was a Baja (grilled onions, pico, chipotle, avocado crema) and the second was a TJ Style (grilled onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, ketchup). The sweet bun used to hold everything resembled that used for a lobster roll. The flavor combinations were hearty and not spicy which was what I preferred. The grilled onions added some char and texture to the jumbo beef hot dogs. What has changed significantly over time were the prices. Each of my choices cost $8.99. Some of the other varieties were as high as $12 which is insane for a loaded hot dog. I did appreciate the bacon wrapping to the franks, but I can't see myself coming to East Village that often for these products because there are plenty of diverse dining options that are more satisfying in this part of downtown. read more

You order by yourself on the little pad outside which is great. After we ordered our food was ready almost right away. We ordered the chilli cheese dog and Sonoran dog. I don't know what I was expecting but I thought the hot dog I was going to get would be better quality hot dogs. It literally tasted like the hot dogs you just go buy at the grocery store. Nothing special and they're actually small if you don't get the jumbo dog. There's a lot of ingredients on your hot dog so your bread gets soggy fast. While I can appreciate that it cuts down on overhead expenses to make people order on devices rather than a live person, to me it was a little bit off putting and made the experience less personal. The dogs themselves were really tasty even if they were somewhat expensive given that its a hot dog, specialty or not. We ordered an Ayyyy Weyyy and a California. The California comes with fries on the hot dog itself. Hot dogs are served in a basket with a side of ketchup. It took about seven minutes to receive the text that they were ready. There is no parking lot here given it's in East Village so you either have to look for street parking (limited). I would recommend taking a ride share, trolley or walking here if you'd like to go. Another 5 star place that has just recently closed their storefront. Saddened to hear this. They have some of the best hot dogs ever created. Well-known for years and present at several Yelp events, they are strictly catering now. They were even catered to my work once, and people raved about them for a week! They could possibly be opening another storefront later. They have always been super friendly, and the product is top notch. They are operating at a few farmer's markets around town, namely the Ocean Beach on Wednesdays from 4-8p. I suggest you give them a try, they offer veggie dogs too. The website has detailed info on the farmer's market locations, as well as the menu to check out. One thing I never got to try was the micheladas they had at the storefront, now I can't! We love the Surf & Turf dog, the Carnitas Dog and, when we're feeling like a real treat, the aforementioned Wagyu Burger is not to be believed.
