Some green and some red tamales
    Karla R.

This place is amazing! You can tell it's family run and the food is all delicious and home-cooked. The cook, who I assume may be Brenda, is SO NICE and sweet and repeatedly expressed her gratitude for us ordering food from here. We kept telling her we were excited to try it for the first time since we found it on Yelp. The hot cheeto elote was completely delicious and I wish I had gotten a second one since I loved it that much. I didn't try the tamales, but my husband looooved them. He especially liked the green tamales. There's a good variety of food here like burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, fries, etc. It may be easy to miss at first, so keep an eye out if you're visiting for the first time. It's all street parking, too Also, they now accept Venmo as a form of payment!! So you can pay with cash or Venmo here.

Handmade Delicious and Homemade with love! Definitely a local eatery with complete devotion to Mexican Staples Like Seasonal Tamales and Champurrado served All Day! Very friendly, attentive and kind service! Rooted deep in the local scene, you can pull up the side and grab a bite!

    Corn on a cob!

Brenda was such a sweetheart! She made us feel so special and welcomed. She is making everything by hand and lots of love. We tried the corn on cob and the tamales and OMG it was so good! The tamales tasted so homey and delicious. Brenda told us she makes the masa with her hands and that's what gives it the amazing soft texture. Must try! It was so good! Her cute little spot is attached to her house but the ambiance just feels cozy and welcoming. Please go and try out Brenda's Tamales, the prices are very affordable and she will be so happy to see you there trying her amazing food! Can't wait to go back to SD for Brenda's food!

Oh yeah Breneda's place is bomb. I came here randomly around 10pm on a Friday and there were people streaming in and out of this place. The hot cheetos elote was sooo good and it was budget-friendly. Everyone was super friendly and kind, including the other customers. 7/7 would come again.

Great food, fast and friendly service! Wonderful family owned storefront. Travelled on a scooter from downtown to get here and it didn't disappoint! We will make it a point to come stop by here every time we are in SD for any occasion!

The space is decorated with very cool paintings on the walls and plenty of plants. They also have TVs for entertainment, and the FIFA games were playing while I was there. I ordered the ribeye fries, and the portion size is huge--definitely large enough to share between two adults and leave full. The ribeye itself is very good quality, but for me, the flavors missed the mark because the steak gets a bit lost. They are topped with sour cream, avocado, lots of cheese, beans (which they actually forgot to put on mine), chimichurri, onions, and cilantro. It's built like traditional carne asada fries, but because the meat is such high quality, all the thick sauces ended up overpowering it. Just the chimichurri and another light sauce would have been plenty. To drink, I got the watermelon agua fresca. Personally, it was too sweet for me--I didn't taste much watermelon, mostly just sugar water. I love fresh-pressed watermelon juice, so I was expecting something a bit lighter and more refreshing. Service was great! The girl taking orders was very polite and acknowledged me while she finished helping the customers ahead of me. They use table numbers and bring the food right out to whichever table you choose. I also appreciated that the self-serve salsa bar was clean, and I love that they offer hand sanitizer right there to use before or after grabbing your sauces. I think there was alcohol available from what looked like maybe another small business set up to the left when you first walk in, but I'm not 100% sure. It's all street parking. It was busy, so you may have to walk a bit. Also, keep an eye out when crossing the street...I didn't see a crosswalk, and while some cars went the speed limit, others didn't seem to care! I'd definitely go back to try the actual tacos next time!

Walk along the Embarcadero & get a freeze on a hot day, stop by Chilanga's (the best booth there) & get my huitlacoche on. Live music, shade, delicious vendors, right across from the water. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

They were on the smaller side, hand-held snacks, but quite filling. I remember trying Sonoran-style hot dogs while visiting a friend in Tucson, AZ several years ago…read more After seeing Ochidoggy show up on the activity feed for my connections, I decided to visit this pop-up vendor in the southern part of the Normal Heights neighborhood. The setup was a simple cart under a canopy in a random parking lot on El Cajon Blvd. A few picnic tables with overhead cover were available if you wanted to eat your food on-site. Five different hot dogs along with french fries and a stuffed jalapeno pepper were offered on the menu. A typical Sonoran hot dog has a bacon-wrapped frank topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, and other condiments. It's served on a bolillo bun. The Hot Dog Regular here contained bacon, grilled onion, red onion, tomato, and mayonnaise on a football-shaped bun which made it the closest resemblance to an original Sonoran. I chose two other varieties for my to-go order, a Hot Dog Jumbo and a Hot Dog Chilidogo. The first one had the same ingredients as the Regular with ham and American cheese added. The second one also had the same ingredients as the Regular, however the bacon-wrapped frank was stuffed inside a California pepper with grilled mozzarella cheese on top. Trays of condiments were arranged in front of the cart so you could select additional toppings. Four different sauce bottles were also available for more flavor. As you can see from my photo, both hot dogs were buried under the other components. The right type of bun was used which was very soft. I did feel that a gratuitous amount of mayonnaise was drizzled on top. I didn't add more toppings or sauces because there was already a sufficient spread. I am unsure if there are other businesses in the SD area that serve Sonoran-style hot dogs as I have not actively searched for them. I can say that the products I tasted from Ochidoggy were good enough for a four star rating.

The owner was extremely nice and friendly - explained all the options and toppings to us, and even came over to turn on the heater so it will be less cold while we eat. The food came out quickly and everything was super efficient. Hot dog was great - tasty soft bun, bacon wrapped hot dog really tasty, and enjoyed all the toppings.
