The owner is very nice and accommodating. The food was alright but I wouldn't really expect more for about $9 a dish. I believe others will either give it a higher or lower rating depending on what they focus specifically on but for me it was just about neutral.

this is one of those strange neighbourhood places that grabs at as many straws as they think they…read morecan handle in order to make a go of it. as the strange name implies, this place is indeed a combo site for philippino groceries and a western union. though i saw the western union sign outside, i never recall seeing anything inside that would clue me into its existence amongst all the dried shrimp and noodles that were on display in abundance. admittedly, if i were not keeping myself attuned to being aware of places within my area or any area to review, i might not have walked into this place; moreover, i dont even know what to do with dried shrimps. my area is filled with chinese and vietnamese shops - some restaurants and some food shops further west. this shop lies east of where i live about a 5 minute walk away. there are a host of different things id like to try like their glass noodles or their egg noodles. they have whole frozen little fish - some at most no bigger than a potato chip. again, i have no idea what the hell id do with them. theres also junk food like pork rind chips. id try it, why not, but dont think id hang on for more than that. i did buy a tall boy of a coconut juice and some green tea to start. its cheap and new to me so i imagine that this will be the start of a wonderful new friendship.

It is from a box and you can either buy the packaged box to go or eat one of their ready and heated empanadas. For $4, it was tiny and although tasty, the filling is barely existing. I chose beef and there was barely any meat, mostly just dough. Although understandable this isnt made by the store on site, but rather from a packaged box, sold in fours, and not sure of the cost of that, but hopefully its not 4 x $4 = $16, as it would definitely be a rip. The savoury pastry gets 2 stars from me plus 1 for the nice lady serving the empanada and allowing me to use card to pay. If you want a SMALL snack and really like dough, then maybe try this.

We asked if we can get an empanada and she said you have to pay inside. We went inside, paid, and were directed back to the empanada stand by the gentleman behind the cashier. The lady was not back at the empanada stand so we patiently waited for an empanada (there were no other customers at the time). After a few moments, another couple walked in, bought an empanada through the same gentleman, to whom the gentleman then escorted back and served an empanada. We were already taken aback by what happened. However, expected him to then serve us, he removed his glove and proceeded to walk back to the cashier. We had to stop him and ask if he was going to serve us...

Because of its location, it's easy to miss if you don't walk all the way to the back corner at the lower level. They sell a lot of Ukrainian grocery items, along with ready-to-meat hot food items such as cabbage rolls, latkes, and cutlets (they even have fish and vegetarian ones). There is also a Ukrainian version of veggie burger that is okay (pretty big size, made of all plant ingredients). They sell some sweet items as well. The owner is very friendly.

The Ukrainian sausage lady kept pushing the potato latkes on sarah l. and me but we refused. I opted instead for a container of beet salad and some garlicky half-sour pickles that I fished out of the brine. You'll also see other Ukrainian specialties like cabbage rolls, head cheese, breads, and desserts. Most of the stuff is sold by weight so if you're clueless about weight estimation like I am, you could easily spend $14 without really meaning to. But I just had more of the kobassa (with Kozlik's triple crunch mustard!) and the pickles for lunch. Mmm...It was money well spent.
