Perola has changed hands -- prices have increased, and sometimes they're out of stock on items you want.

Home away from home. Just the place I needed to find to make a great dinner for our hosts.

I always come here for the Vietnamese snacks and sweets they make. The Pandan seven layer cake is…read moremy go-to and it's not too sweet with the right texture and consistency. They also make rice noodles and soy milk fresh. I saw in a previous review that there's a chance they don't give the sweetened soy milk but there's labels and you can check it yourself... They have it in the fridge separated by sweetened and unsweetened and it's all freshly made. I usually get their flat rice noodles a little over $2 a pound, bring it home, and stir fry it myself. Sometimes it's still hot in the bag so I bring an envirobag to make sure the heat isn't too much. Also, make sure you don't go too early because they don't usually make it until noon so if you go earlier than that, they won't have any in stock. The staff is generally friendly and are helpful if you don't know exactly what you're looking for. They'll tell you what is freshly made and what is in stock. Overall, they're a great supplier of soy milk and rice.

Some traditional Cantonese style desserts include fermented steam rice cake ($1.50) and bowl shaped rice cakes with red beans, as well as traditional Vietnamese desserts included pandan coconut milk mung bean cakes ($3.25) and coconut milk cakes. Vegans will be delighted to learn that these traditional sweets are all plant based! No modification or special request required! I am look forward to picking up some fresh tofu and soy based products in the future! On a recent visit, there also seems to be Buddhist style vegetarian platters refrigerated as well! This is such a exciting discovery, as it adds to new vegan options in this already vegan friendly neighbourhood! The vegan God must be blessing this area and sprinkling it with extra star dust!

Because of its location, it's easy to miss if you don't walk all the way to the back corner at the lower level. They sell a lot of Ukrainian grocery items, along with ready-to-meat hot food items such as cabbage rolls, latkes, and cutlets (they even have fish and vegetarian ones). There is also a Ukrainian version of veggie burger that is okay (pretty big size, made of all plant ingredients). They sell some sweet items as well. The owner is very friendly.

The Ukrainian sausage lady kept pushing the potato latkes on sarah l. and me but we refused. I opted instead for a container of beet salad and some garlicky half-sour pickles that I fished out of the brine. You'll also see other Ukrainian specialties like cabbage rolls, head cheese, breads, and desserts. Most of the stuff is sold by weight so if you're clueless about weight estimation like I am, you could easily spend $14 without really meaning to. But I just had more of the kobassa (with Kozlik's triple crunch mustard!) and the pickles for lunch. Mmm...It was money well spent.
