Drove here from roanoke because we had been told the food was good, I was not disappointed. They make their seasonings in house so it is their own special blend. Very flavorful and not too spicy so the flavor shines through. The service was great. Our drinks were never empty and they refilled the chips and salsa often. First impression: when we walked in the door there was a very bored-looking woman at the register. I don't know what she was doing but she didn't greet us or even look up and acknowledge us for several minutes. We came for the "buffet" which is the saddest buffet I've ever seen. Limp, colorless food that wasn't even hot. Everything was dry and there were no sauces at all. We asked if they had enchiladas but were told, "not for the buffet". Really? A Mexican buffet with no enchiladas? There were only three meats and some soggy tortillas. Something that looked like a taquito but only had dry, flavorless chicken inside. I would like to eat locally instead of driving to Roanoke, Martinsville, and Greensboro, but Rocky Mount has really lousy restaurants and this is one of the worst. I'm from Texas, and there is no better Mexican food to be found north of my home state. I fully embrace this disappointing fact but nonetheless have still been searching high and low for a restaurant here in Virginia that will satisfy that food craving. Sadly, this is not that place. It was cute when we walked in and the menu had a great selection. Lots of TVs, too, so potentially a new place to watch our games! And hey, free chips and salsa! Not bad. But that was where the positive experience ended. My boyfriend got a diet coke and he was brought a regular one, and I had a lime margarita that was still warm because the ice hadn't chilled it yet. This is straight from the room-temperature jug, nothing "fresh" about it. I was excited to try the tableside guacamole, but our waiter forgot to bring it. I had a chicken taco salad, which wasn't bad but I wish it had more flavor. I didn't even realize there were beans in it until I noticed the very bottom of the taco shell had a small amount of thin paste. My boyfriend always gets a hamburger at Mexican restaurants (yes, really...) and he said he enjoyed his, but we both agreed the fries were previously frozen and not cooked all the way through. One of them was actually still ice cold, lol. Once we were ready to leave, it took an additional 15-20 minutes to get the bill. Thank goodness for that refill of regular coke! Lol. There were people there, but the restaurant wasn't even mostly full. We still tipped the waiter but I don't think we will be going back. read more

I have eaten here before but today the service was horrible. Food tasted good but took 10 minutes after being seated for my order to be taken. Other parties that arrived after me had orders taken prior to me. I am not sure I really had a server assigned to my table as the gentleman that took my order appears to be bewildered by my lunch order. Minutes later a young lady came by to retake my order explaining the original server was confused as to what I wanted. Eventually received my Burrito California and I enjoyed the taste and large potion size. I sat after finishing for at least 15 minutes with no check delivered and no plates cleared. I went to the cash register with out a check and payed for my meal. Might be a while before I return to Rio. read more

We're in town for the weekend and decided to try this spot. We did takeout which might have affected the quality of the food, it was cold so we had to microwave it. The chicken and steak on the fajitas were tough. But the white sauce on the side (not sure what it's called) made up for it!! The margaritas are made with a fake lemon-lime mix and taste like Gatorade. I got the mahi mahi tacos and that might have been the worst decision of my menu ordering life. I took two bites and regret both. It tasted like I could be getting food poisoning in the next 24 hours (I'll keep you posted). I really hated the food here. Typically my favorite go to Mexican restaurant in FC, but the last few times I've placed to go orders, I've been disappointed. I always get the ACP, then a side of white sauce and salsa with chips. The ACP either has barley had any food in the box or there was hardly any cheese sauce at all. So therefore it was super dry and it taste very bland. If I could put 0 stars I would. My party and I were taken to an outdoor table where we had to put up our own umbrella and for 8 people we were only given one table that could fit four. The family next to us gave up one of their tables so we could fit everyone. Our waitress took our drink and food orders. Within the next hour she brought out pitchers of water and tea so that she would not have to check on us anymore. We didn't see her for another hour. As we were about to leave, our food was finally brought out but half of the dishes were cold. I asked to speak to the manager but the manager never came. She handed us our bill, expecting us to pay for practically no service and cold food. I asked to speak to the manager again and she said I would have to go downstairs to the kitchen to talk to him. It is extremely disrespectful to be treated poorly and then the manager not even have the decency to come talk to us about the issues. I went downstairs and he never apologized to us about the almost 2.5 hour wait outside (I ended up getting sunburnt we were outside so long). He made excuses and was going to make us pay full price for the food. I told him we would not pay full price for such negligent service and obstinacy on his part to confront the issue. He begrudgingly gave us a discount but was not going to unless I told him we were not going to pay. I have not been back since and never will go back to El Río. El Rodeo is much more respectful and courteous. They have the superior food and overall experience. read more

my name is mary moran I was there for a party of ten on Saturday the 7th after Ferrums graduation. my nephew kevin minter is a regular at this restaurant. our waiter was very rude. I went to get some extra napkins he told me to go sit down and not to touch them. I was standing right in front of them.i was only trying to help. my mom and myself both ordered cheese nachos. everyone else had there food we had to ask for ours. it was not hot at all. I didn't dare complain to him.
