So glad to have found this place on Yelp! As others have noted, there's some street parking available right in front. We got takeout but the vibe inside seemed really fun, and it was pretty busy! Such a great spot! The location has street parking and surface lots, plus a great front patio that likely sees a lot of use during the summer. There are two entrances, with the front having a staircase. The rear entrance has ramps and looked more accessible. We were greeted right away by most of the servers and sat in a comfortable booth. There are seating areas that look good for groups as well as cozy couples. You can also consider a seat at the bar to watch all of the kitchen action. Chips and salsa were provided as soon as we sat, with drink orders made shortly thereafter. No prices were listed for the margaritas, oddly enough. Are they gratis? *shrugs* Smokin'Hubster ordered a massive burrito (macho?) with beef, chicken and shrimp. I had the tacos el pastor with a side of rice and beans. Neither of use finished lunch because the portions were huge. The food was very fresh. I loved the mixed veggies in the rice, they added some great color. I appreciated the soft corn tortillas, they gave the tacos a rustic mouthfeel and flavor. BONUS: Both the chopped onions and the minced cilantro were served on the side, very thoughtful for folks that aren't fans of them. Our server was super attentive, the bathrooms are really clean and nice, the whole restaurant is well-lit and warmly decorated. It's an authentic New Mexican restaurant with upscale type decor and upbeat Mexican music playing! I went for a late lunch so it wasn't too busy. The food was average. I got 3 crispy flat tacos - can't remember what they were called- with chicken, avocado, red onion, cheese & cilantro. The avocado was somewhat brown and the cilantro was tasteless. I love cilantro and I really wanted them to taste good. The sauce that came on the side was dark and just very salty. It didn't do anything for it. I liked the crunchy corn shells although it was difficult to eat! I got a draft beer with it, small $5. Couple next to me had 2 martinis for $27! The waiter accidentally gave me their check. It was amazing. The chips and salsa were good enough as a meal. The salsa was quite delicious. A very unique flavor that wasn't unusual. The chips were corn chips, and robust in flavor and consistency. Our meals were quickly served. And delicious. My wife had a burrito and I had tacos. Corn tortillas for the tacos. The sauces that they used were very unique and delicious. I'm not an expert on authentic Mexican food, but this is NOT Tex Mex. We had the unfortunate situation to be located directly under the main speaker for the music. It was a bit loud, but the Mexican pop music was actually pleasant and not hard on the ears. really disappointed and honestly quite angry. We came in as a group of 3 people it ended up being over $100. for 4 corona's it was just over 24 dollars!! We also got charged $3 for hot sauce. this wouldn't have been that big of a deal if our server Paulina was not neglectful of our table and a tad bit rude. We will definitely not be coming back which is sad since we all loved it here. Overall horrible service and pricing is absolutely outrageous, not worth your time or money. read more

Great food, pricing quality and quantity. I loved the ambience here & the seating outside was very nice. It was well kept and workers were clearly passionate and working hard to provide great service. Very communicative & bring out crunchy chips and flavorful salsa! Food wise, personally, their birria tacos could be cheesier and the birria itself could've had a stronger flavor, but the 2 other sauces elevate it enough to where that wasn't an issue for me. Definitely the best birria option around here though. Their use of pineapple and chorizo is exquisite! I am feeling extra zesty after a fat bite I for sure will be returning and trying more. My wife and I stopped here for lunch. Food was excellent great portion for very generous grade and service was efficient. My wife got a frisbee in half filled with delicious grilled beef peppers and onions. I had grilled steak tacos. Mexican food is my favorite and I'm so happy that we have another Mexican restaurant in town. The vibes in this place are amazing, I love the decor and atmosphere so much. Chips and salsa are wonderful and the wait is never too long, even when busy. Prices are a little steep, but that is every place nowadays. My only critique is I wish that some of the tacos came with a side sauce or a side of rice without having to order it as an extra. We ordered the calamari salad and barrio tacos. Everything was so fantastic and delicious. The beef in the tacos was the best I have had in so long. Staff was friendly, accommodating, and fast. Came here with high hopes based on reviews! Maybe weekend lunch just isn't their strong suit. High points: Seated right away and drink orders taken quickly. Enjoyed the chips and salsa, drinks were good, and the tacos we ended up with were enjoyable! Low/strange points-there were only three other parties in the restaurant but it took about 20 minutes to actually get drinks. Also, there were no prices on the drink menu. When our waiter brought our drinks, he offered more chips, to which we said yes please! Never got them though. We order the 6 taquiza, which indicated that we needed to pick 2 meats. The menu listing didn't list any meat options so we assumed any proteins on the menu were fair game. We picked steak and tilapia and ordered with our waiter, then a few minutes later another service member came to the table and told us neither of those were options. Seemed strange based on the menu availability and also the fact that a 3 taco order for both of those proteins would have basically been priced the same. Also, the beans come with meat in them. My husband hypothesized they may have been beanie weenie lol. I'm not convinced but they weren't very flavorful regardless so I probably wouldn't get them again. Tl;dr food and drinks were overall enjoyable, service left something to be desired, and the menus need a bit more clarity to that customers can have a better set of expectations. read more

El Santo is an excellent Mexican restaurant! It is one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever been! We got the queso dip, the Santo Fajita Quesadilla with steak, and the La Patrona tacos (delicious and vegetarian!!!). The food was excellent! I usually struggle finishing my entire meal when I eat at a Mexican restaurant (probably because I overload on chips and salsa), but I was able to finish it all! Absolutely adored the fried cauliflower on my tacos. The drinks we got were also excellent. We bought two different margaritas. The mixed beverages was a bit sweeter than we had hoped, but they were quite delicious. The only downside to this was that we were hoping for a traditional (cheaper) margarita. However, we can't complain too much when the drinks were so good. Not sure if we would pay $16 for such a small drink again though. Service and ambience were great as well. Our server was attentive, kind, and humorous! We loved the upbeat music and the decorations around the restaurant. Overall, El Santo is a great new addition to Marquette! read more

Our waiter was the only "gringo" amongst the employees. Asked about the tequila list, none, but I could go look myself. I was sitting next to the wall in a booth with 2 other ppl beside me, the outside friend is handicapped I said little hard for me to get out can you tell me if you have some top shelf ones like Don Julio? Reply: Don't know anything about tequila. When ordering I said "I'm buying for these two" sitting next to me. His comment, tell me later, he ignored us, when he did show up he was rude & condescending. 3 of us at that table have & still work in the food industry. We know how important it is to be patient, tolerant & "everybody has a bad moment etc". He came to give us our bills & cards/change back, shuffled them around & said, you guys can figure it out, put them on the table & walked away. I have more to share- there was a table of 8 ladies celebrating a birthday, the canned "happy birthday" song started then it got cranked up so loud no one could hear anyone talk, those ladies immediately got their barely eaten meals to go & left. They've been open a year, food wasn't that great, my beef was leather, the so called "ceviche" had a strange flavor. Eat there at your own risk & tolerance. Oh & I asked the manager to choose a high end tequila & bring a couple shots, reply- going to be expensive- that's normal I said, he brought us Corazon shots, $11 each, a bottle of that at any store $25.00, not top shelf. . Food was OK for Michigan Mexican. Margaritas are big, sweet, and expensive. If you're the type of folks looking for a standard 1:1:1 tequila/cointreau/lime margarita, this isn't the place. I get it that most people in this area are looking for sweet & big, but I'd be back more often if they had their bartenders trained to make at least one classic, tart, fresh-lime-juice marg. For the record, I did ask if they could make one, was told yes, but what came out was not that. Clearly had sweet margarita mix and not the correct ratios. read more

Planned a walk along the waterfront with my spouse to include a lunch time stop here. Very neat decor and atmosphere greats you along with an attentive and friendly staff. Chips and drinks were brought out immediately. Chips were fresh and tasty with excellent salsa with fresh onion and cilantro. Small detail, but I asked for a Tamarind flavored Jaritos and they had it available. My wife ordered the fiesta taco plate with chicken, pork and beef tacos. I had the El Jefe with three flank steak tacos. Both meals were excellent and just the right portion size. The wait staff was great, checking back in, but not so much as to be annoying or make you feel rushed. This was definitely a great Marquette experience and we will eat here again!! read more
