Food was really good - highly recommend the fish chowder! Three had that plus other items and wished we got more. Two had prime rib dinner and said it was very good. Scallops were good as well. Ok new owners, new review. My whitefish chowder was a delicious meal in itself. The coleslaw with horseradish was really good as is the meatloaf. The food is a bases loaded, home run. The ambiance was a swing & a miss. See the bar stools & graphics behind the bar...um, no. Doesn't match a Northwoods inn feel. Windows in the bandstand brings the beautiful woods in, thank you. The Amazon.com fake antler light fixtures & white feather chandelier....no. Swing & a miss. I can't help but think this place has changed from a special dinning experience to a roadside restaurant. The waitress we had was not trained. She didn't know what kind of sauce was on the meatloaf. I got my main course first followed by my appetizer. I finished both. Then my DH salad came. He asked them to just bring his meatloaf & forget the salad. His meal came & so did my coleslaw. I'm giving it 4 stars based on this wonderful building's history & the food. read more

My Dad and I always loved going to The Brownstone Inn. We've always had a great meal. My wife and I were up in Munising not long after he passed away and decided to go out for a nice dinner at The Brownstone Inn with some of his neighbors. There are new owners now at The Brownstone. While the food remains great, the ambience has changed a little. It used to have a great cabin feel. While that's still there, I don't like the signs and graphics that were added. In addition, the table arrangement has changed, now blocking the fireplace. However, that being said, this is still a great place to come for a more upscale evening, I had the blackened Whitefish, which was prepared perfectly. The seasoning was balanced perfectly with the Whitefish. Most importantly, the Whitefish was not overcooked. The house brussel sprouts and the garlic smashed red skinned potatoes were a pleasant surprise. My wife had the maple bourbon aged steak which is aged for 24 hours in premium bourbon, garlic and spices. This tasted amazing as well. We finished our meal with the chocolate cake for two. I wouldn't hesitate to order this again. As usual the food here did not disappoint. Our service was great. I just miss the old ambience. This would have been a five star review if it wasn't for the changes to the dining room. But this is not a deal breaker. When in the Munising area and you're looking for a great meal, head to The Brownstone Inn. read more

4 stars here. Faux wilderness lodge setting along Hwy 28. Quite busy this visit so about a ten minute wait. Antler chandeliers, real and fake wildlife trophies, and old outdoor gear on the walls. We arrived simultaneously with a tour bus full of young-high school-seniors-students and their chaperone. Glad we got seated and ordered before them. The staff took great care of them and everyone else without missing a beat. Our server could not have been better. Right away we were presented with a bucket of four freshly baked rolls with cinnamon butter. Very tasty and they brought out more when the bucket was empty. The kind of touch we rarely see anymore. Great for breakfast the next day . Menu not inexpensive here. Saturday prime rib special looked inviting to my DW so that was the choice for her. Chose the small cut with a dressed baked potato. Her other side was coleslaw with the blue cheese crumbles left off but that was a mistake as they put horseradish in their coleslaw!!! That is a real head scratcher to us but must be appreciated by the locals. What really caught my eye was the two different preparations of elk meatloaf on the menu. One as a plate with choice of sides and the other as a sandwich with mozzarella, provolone, and marinara sauce. The sandwich won out. Two thick slices of Texas toast with a minimal amount of marinara and a thick slice of the meatloaf plus the gooey cheeses. They kindly brought a requested side cup of the sauce but unfortunately it arrived straight from the frig. Still nice to have. My side choice was red skinned mashed potatoes which were delicious, probably made that day. While the sandwich was enjoyable as a whole, the elk meatloaf itself imo really could have used something to liven up the flavor like pepper, onions, or sage, etc. Actually quite bland. The prime rib slice was much bigger than expected but looked gorgeous, clearly not something that was brought in precooked and heated when ordered-yes we have run into this in our travels. The beef was cooked just right with a nice rosy center...this meat was seasoned perfectly with salt and pepper. Large baker was perfect and not a bit was left on the plate. Much of the beef came home with us and was enjoyed the next day. Too full for dessert! Really the best meal we had while in the area and highly recommended. read more

Could not have asked for a better experience. We stopped here randomly, not familiar with the area or restaurant, not knowing we would need reservations. The owner still tried to get us a table, but was only able to offer seats at the bar. So grateful for her doing this and that we stayed! Truly the sweetest collection of people here with amazing food. No wonder reservations are needed! This will be a yearly stop for us now up north. I am saddened to learn the owners of I believe 31 years sold the restaurant... I pray the new owners give this special place the love it deserves. We were camping nearby at Pictures Rocks CG and a friend suggested we try this restaurant. I'm so glad we gave it a try as the food, drinks, and server were all amazing. Excellent! My wife and I stopped on our way back from the sunset tour of Pictured Rocks. It was late but they were open and greeted us warmly. We ordered a filet mignon and the traditional shrimp alfredo. We included sides of whitefish chowder, brussel sprouts and baked potato. All were wonderfully prepared. Ordered carry out after a long drive to our resort destination. We ordered a baked pretzel appetizer, a perch platter dinner, and a walleye dinner. The pretzel was average and quite soggy. My family has been coming to a the Brownstone for decades and even though it's changed hands occasionally, the quality of food and service has always been exceptional. We brought a group of 11 in on an early Saturday evening and were seated immediately. My absolute favorite dish on the menu is the Blackened White Fish. It is truly the best meal I've ever eaten. Luckily it seems to stay on the menu after all these years. We would never miss a trip to the Brownstone any time we are near Au Train and were so glad to have had yet another amazing experience there. read more

We sat at the bar, where Morgan is absolutely top notch - she is the perfect mix of friendly and personable while knowledgeable and professional - we would sit at the bar again just to get her! The Lake Superior Whitefish is a MUST - the best fish I've ever eaten, cooked so perfectly! But you cannot miss the COLE SLAW here of all things, it's AMAZING - there's horseradish and blue cheese crumbles and all manner of delightful things in there! After a long day of kayaking and hiking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore my daughters and I could think of nothing but good food. Our shuttle driver suggested The Brownstone Inn and we were so excited they were open after 8:00pm! That is something most places around here don't do. It's a nice looking place but it sneaks up on you just west of Au Train on M-28. There's an interesting entry; please choose the door on the right. Walk through the waiting area at the base of the stairs and you'll find the dining room and bar. It has a cozy atmosphere and we were greeted promptly after we selected our table. They have a nice bar selection and a few good wines! The menu had a nice variety. Everything sounded delicious! And it was! Good portion sizes with something for everyone. We split a salted caramel brownie with French vanilla ice cream but it was devoured before I could get a picture. Thank you for a good evening! read more

The food was okay, but way over priced. Had the entrees been $10 cheaper, I would be more satisfied. My husband and I came to celebrate our anniversary, and we would have cooked better food for far less than the $140 we spent on this meal. All the steaks are sirloin, unless you spend an ungodly amount for an upgrade, and I've never spent so much for such a poor cut of meat. My husband ordered their version of "surf and turf", which originally comes smothered in cheese. We omitted the cheese. The steak was cooked correctly, but the blackened shrimp wasn't seasoned, and there were only three. For $39. I ordered the aged bourbon steak, and there were more onions than overcooked meat. I asked for my steak medium rare, and it came out medium well. It was still tender, but the 5-6 pieces of steak in the entree were not worth the $39 spent. The service was okay, and the atmosphere is what you'd expect for a Yooper establishment trying to be fancy. We're happy to have tried it, but won't be back. read more

Very disappointing dining experience... the food is expensive and the quality is lacking. The crab stuffed jalapeño poppers were too fishy tasting to eat, the brisket was tough and chewy and the meatloaf tasted like a tv dinner meatloaf. The drinks were good as were the salads and rolls. Our server was not friendly and seemed overwhelmed and annoyed. Save money and try the Buckhorn Restaurant or drive into Marquette for some fabulous dining options. read more

I went for dinner and was curious about this restaurant for awhile. I have to say the ambiance is very nice, knotty pine with Lake Superior shoreline across the street. My waiter was pleasant and attentive. Now the bad news... I had the ribeye sandwich. It was very fatty but once I separated all the fat, I found the sandwich tasty. The cook may have been having a bad night but the fries were the worst I have experienced in my life, undercooked, oil soaked, and I am assuming the fryer oil was at the end of its use. I ate one fry and stopped eating them. I ordered steak and this restaurant seems to advocate fish and some vegan, but for the prices they command, they could do a much better job. I still can't get past the terrible condition of the fries... I have to suggest not stopping there. read more

We had to wait for over 30 minutes for a drink order, longer than that for the meal to be served, and we had 3 people waiting on us. Ate here with my family tonight with reasonably high expectations on our vacation to the UP, but unfortunately the food was appallingly poor in taste and quality. This place has so much potential, and the owners and service were lovely, but unfortunately the quality of the dishes for the price was incredibly disappointing. I leave very few poor reviews, but the food went below and beyond. I ordered the chicken breast dinner. The salad was good and fresh, but the meal itself tasted like a bad frozen meal. The portion was small, the chicken was rubbery and unseasoned with a chewy and fatty skin on it, and the sides of frozen corn and gluey mashed potatoes were unacceptable. I only ate it because the price point was so high, and would have sent it back if the meals around me had shown more promise. My brother had the lasagna, which was perhaps the worst dish. It tasted worse than even most frozen lasagnas I've had- mushy and flavorless. There were almost raw onions layered in it that weren't incorporated into the dish in any way. He is a teenage boy who will eat almost anything, and he struggled with it. My mother ordered the whitefish, which in and of itself was mediocre (unseasoned except for a sprinkling of paprika), served with the same disappointing sides as the chicken. For the price point, I've had better whitefish everywhere else I've been in the UP. My father ordered the New York Strip, which was cooked and seasoned very well. This is the only dish we found decent, which given the very high price point, just met expectations. The Brownstone Inn has potential, but needs to seriously re-evaluate it's menu, food sources, prices, and chefs. My brother observed that it would be the perfect candidate for a show like Restaurant Impossible. It should be noted that they took very careful Covid measures, and had a great beer menu. That said, my family is not picky or fancy eaters by any means, and we agreed that any one of us could have prepared any of the dishes better, and that 3/4 tasted frozen and reheated. I would definitely consider dining in Christmas or Munising instead until this place gets a revamp. read more

Perhaps the BEST piece of fish I have ever had in my life. Get the Jamaican seasoned whitefish, and you won't regret it. The Brownstone is the place to eat in the U.P.! In fact, it's the best places for miles around - if you're driving along M-28, do yourself a favor and stop here. The owners and wait staff know the locals by name after awhile, so when you're a regular, you feel like family. When you're in the Upper Peninsula, you gotta have whitefish. For dinner, I usually enjoy the Rocky Mountain seasoned whitefish, but lately the Jamaican is giving it a run for its money. For $23, you get a dinner roll, house salad, vegetables, potato or rice blend, and a sizeable piece of pescado. I also enjoy the whitefish sandwich and Greek burger! *Also recommend getting the fish on a bed of garden or Caesar salad! On the dessert menu was a killer salted caramel brownie on a pretzel crust, served a la mode. Man oh man, still dreaming about that beauty. The Brownstone does quite a business on summer weekends, so make a reservation in advance! You'd be surprised - sometimes on a nice summer weekday they have to turn people away. read more

We had a fabulous evening to celebrate a special 50th anniversary with our children and grandchildren--13 total! The atmosphere was perfect--so cozy and comfortable.
