Our two month motorhome trip brought us to Marquette, MI for three days. After an internet search (thanks Yelp), we decided to eat at The Vierling. There were no seats at the highly touted back room, with a view, so we decided to sit at the bar...excellent decision. BTW, the view at the back area is not worth getting stressed about. However, it is a great area. Our bartender was Marissa; she was great. When in Rome...we both decided to get the whitefish. Mine was just the regular seasoning and my wife got the scampi version. Both were very good. We both had one of the Vierling's brews (cant remember which one) and we both enjoyed it. Vierling also has a blueberry brew and blueberries are actually dropped into it before served. We may go back today just to try it. It was a great experience and struck up a conservation with a young local. He wrote down several recommendations for us, including Black Rock Brewery and Portside, which deserve a review. At dinner time, get here early. You definitely want a table in the back to look out over the lake. It's a really pretty view. Unfortunately tonight I didn't get here early enough so I sat out by the bar, which is absolutely fine. I started with a French onion soup, which I normally do when I'm here, tonight it was a little less oniony than it usually is, but that just could simply be a function of whoever was ladling it up. It's still absolutely delicious. For dinner, I had the chicken piccata with a baked potato and steamed green beans. The steamed green beans are a staple while there are a variety of other sides, such as onion rings or Alfredo, etc. I was a little disappointed in the piccata this time. It was less lemony and more oily than I remember. The lemon wedge helped, but I don't think that piccata would have to need additional lemon to the sauce. The green beans also a little heavy on the butter as was the baked potato. I don't want to say that the meal wasn't flavorful, because it was and my server while really busy was an absolute gem, only that it was a little heavy with the melted butter. After many excellent experiences here, this won't turn me off to coming back again and trying something else. Especially if I can get a table in the back! read more

I was in town to work the UP200 dog sled race and was looking for a place with a lake view and this place did not disappoint. Although it was busy that day, the service was very attentive and the Rachel sandwich feature that I had was very tasty. They also have an extensive wine and beer list in the craft cocktail. Smoked whitefish app was terrific. The dill toast and tartar sauce (think homemade) was very fresh and tasty. Our Verling Classic whitefish dinners were as good as expected. Four friends from Kansas University Law School and an internationally known author and his wife, who happen to live in Marquette, met for a Friday-night dinner in September 2025. Earlier that day we all did our book shopping at Snowbound Books on Third Street, and followed that visit by dining at The Vierling. As other reviewers have noted, the place is busy, and reservations are recommended. And as others have noted, the food is very good. Around our table we had soup (the whitefish chowder (cup, $5.75) came out piping hot - perfect with a dash of black pepper and Tabasco), some salads (gluten free, $5) - I wished someone would order the whitefish bites, but not this time. While all of us had dined at Vierling in the past, this was the first time our group was seated in the space immediately adjacent to the bar, accessed through a walkway. The space includes what looks like a still for beer or spirits, and impressive and imposing sight. We arrived at 5:30 p.m., when the space was empty, so sound levels were good. By 6:30 sound levels went up, probably due to our own conversations as well as those around us. Three of us ordered the locally sourced whitefish (grilled & lightly seasoned, $21); others ordered the grilled salmon ($21), and the beer-battered cod basket ($16.75). Those of us with room left after the entrée shared servings of chocolate peanut butter pie ($6.50, with a crushed Oreo crust, whipped peanut butter filling and fudge ganache top). Service was prompt, friendly, and everyone's order was filled without flaw. We tend to talk a lot, and I think we probably overstayed our reservation when our host explained, at close to 8:30 p.m., that the table had been reserved for another seating that evening. Our host was courteous and diplomatic, and I'm glad she spoke up, as we really did occupy the space for close to three hours on a very busy Friday night. Hope to do it again next time we're all in Marquette, but maybe be a bit more mindful of the length of our stay. read more

The atmosphere is a vibe when you walk into the restaurant. It's a mix of history and lively plants with enormous windows. We sat further towards the windows (highly recommend for the views of Marquette). Several spots for instagram or TikTok worthy videos or pictures. The food was fresh with enough volume to constitute a meal instead of a snack. My peanut allergy niece was well taken care of by our friendly waitress, Jessica. She took the time to ensure we were happy, had what we needed, and gave us enough room to enjoy our conversation at the table. The Greek olive salad was highly recommended by our waitress and was the perfect selection. The lemon zest and fresh dill gave it the edge as my favorite Greek salad in Marquette yet. The dressing was zesty with the perfect amount of herbs. The lettuce was crunchy and fresh. The restaurant appeared clean, well maintained, and in good order. Ok this is a small town with not many options to choose from, so we asked at the hotel for recommendations and the girl at the front desk mentioned this place. We ended up coming and having to be put on a waitlist of about 30 min. The place inside is ok, it was unfortunate that we were seated at the very entrance and the weather was cold so o couldn't take off my coat as it felt cold at all times. Food was good. Our server was nice. My husband ordered 2 cocktails that were decent and the Friday special: fish & chips ( pieces were huge) I ordered scampi shrimps and mist day those have been the best ones I've ever had. You feel like you're part of history when you step in. Very warm and inviting vibe! We were seated at the best table in the restaurant right in front of the big window overlooking the harbor. Food - nothing short of excellence! Very hearty and flavorful meals! The whitefish and the salmon are highly recommended for a reason. Very tender and flakey! Stopped into The Vierling while in Marquette by recommendation of my hotel and had a really nice experience. The staff was super friendly and welcoming right away, which set the tone. It was 5/5 service for the entire dinner. It is a very comfortable restaurant to be in. Everything from the lighting, seating, temperature, and my favorite was the decor. The French onion soup was outstanding. The cheese was baked perfectly, lots of flavor in the broth, not over salty. The Whitefish Picatta sauce was mostly what I'd expect, but the fish was not flavorful. The green beans were cooked perfectly, still crunchy. This is definitely a five star restaurant. Just stepping in the customer service is excellent. We came before 4 PM so it was quiet in the restaurant and we asked for a table by the window looking out over the water. The hostess quickly went over and cleared the table for us. The view was just amazing and we watched sailboats moving across the water while we ate our early dinner. This is our first trip to Marquette and hopefully it won't be my last. We came all the way from Maine and this was for us. The menu has lots of great items to choose from and we chose the smoked whitefish plate for an appetizer and it was phenomenal. It had crispy green apple slices and dill cream cheese spread to put on the bread and crackers with the smoked whitefish. I probably could've just eaten two plates of that. My husband got the Ruben and it was loaded with meat and he simply loved it and we got two French onion soups and I got the Greek salad which honestly could've easily fed four people. Atmosphere: They have several seating areas inside. The bathrooms were clean and welcoming. The floor in here (carpeting) was so old and dirty it was black. They really need to replace that it was unappealing to look at while eating. They have a ton of hanging plants in here and the décor was marquette history oriented. Service: They were slammed, like it was wild. The hostess was running around like a chicken with her head cut off trying to clear tables, set up new tables and seat people. She was a short spunky girly and she needs a raise, a big fat one at that. I've never seen someone keep their composure so well in pure chaos. They also need to get another busser to help her out. Our waitress was personable and super quick to remedy a missing ingredient in one of our dishes. She also had local recommendations for breweries and was just awesome. The staff here is literally human gold, 11/10 for these heroes. Food: The french onion soup and the whitefish chowder were amazing, totally lived up to the hype. My salad was spot on minus one ingredient missing (they forgot the beets on the greek salad - but remedied that quickly), it was well balanced and would def order again. My SO got one of the pasta dishes and I've never seen someone try so hard to eat all of their food and fail. MASSIVE portion, so be hungry! Came by on a weekday for lunch. I arrived at around noon and it wasn't that busy. Atmosphere was cool - vintage pub, cozy but not stuffy, casual low lighting. Service: 5/5 was quick and kind. I was seated right away, treated well, please I got a booth all to myself as a solo diner. Whitefish and chips: 4.5/5. Some of the best fish and chips I've had -- and I just came back from London a few weeks ago! I really like that you can choose whitefish (a local specialty) over the traditional cod. The fries and coleslaw were generous, happy to have lime too. I had enough food for two meals. Fries could be a little better but not complaining. Side salad with house dressing: 4.5/5. Fresh ingredients and generous portion for a "side"! Blueberry wheat beer: 3/5. It just tasted like a good lager with blueberries thrown in. The Vierling is a Marquette staple. It is a must-go if you are traveling to the upper peninsula of Michigan. The food is excellent and the best whitefish in town is served here. I ordered the piccata whitefish and it was delicious and full of flavor. The only (minor) criticism I have is that the only vegetable to choose from is green beans. They were good, but it would be nice if they had other options or if they had a vegetable of the day. They give you a second side (with different options) and I always get the wild rice. The ambiance and environment is great, as well. The Vierling has a beautiful dining room with a view of Lake Superior in the back section. When it gets busy (which happens often... it's a very popular restaurant) you might have a long wait for your food but it is worth it. It goes without saying that the service depends on how busy they are. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody and everybody. read more

It seems that they book up with reservations, so we would suggest making them instead of just walking in. The food was quite good. We all tried bites of each others dinner and everything was tasty. The allure of The Vierling has faded in the years since my last visit. Back in my college days, The Vierling was not a brewpub and, honestly, you could expect more from the food. Which is not to say it was terrible. It was OK. The menu seems a bit big, yet there's not much to grab your attention. The view and the brews were good, but lunch was a let-down. Maybe it's the nostalgia for the days gone past, but it sure seems to me it was better once upon a time. I ordered the whitefish, remembering how wonderful it was and it fell flat; no texture, no seasoning (despite being Cajun/blackened). My husband's turkey-bacon-Swiss sandwich was engulfed by bread and lettuce. After the bragging I had done, I feel that my opinion definitely took a bruising.
