My first time here over the summer was good overall! The food was hot and the staff was friendly, which I appreciated. They have a good amount of seating available inside and great options to choose from. We did end up grabbing some made to order alcapurrias. All 3 tasted good but they needed hot sauce, lacking in flavor. I felt as the chicken one lacked the most flavor but was ok when hot sauce added & so did the pork one. I'll say that the ground beef alcapurria was my favorite out of the 3; although I still personally felt they all needed some hot sauce to add that kick missing. An alcapurria is a known Puerto Rican fritura/fried street food, growing up to even being an adult it's one of my favorite things if done right. We also had the bistec with rice, a side of beans, & a side of plantains. As well as the pernil with yellow rice. Both of these dishes lacked flavor, again needing hot sauce or missing something. The beans did have a good amount of flavor, which I enjoyed, & the plantains were slightly over fried. The visit itself was satisfying, I would return to give them another shot as well as hopefully try their carne guisada plate, which wasn't available at the time I went that day. I didn't give this business a 4 star rating simply because of the lack of flavor in mostly each item ordered. I would give it a solid 3.8 if I could. read more

I was in the area and needed dinner for my family and a quick Yelp search identified El Sitio nearby. I love Puerto Rican food so I stopped in. Overall, service was really friendly. It's a small shop with one employee working the front and one chef in the back so there was a little bit of a wait. I ordered 2 pollo guisado plates and one Pernil, all with arroz con gandules. Similar to another review, this chicken lacked the orange color and flavor punch I was expecting. It needed sofrito and a lot more help. The rice wasn't too flavorful either. It was also a small portion. The Pernil was a better portion but also lacked flavor. The sweet plantains were fine. The chicken options were limited besides the stewed chicken, fried wings or empanadas. Flavor and consistency seems to be a common complaint so I hope it turns around soon. read more

So happy to finally try El Sitio! This is a great location and right on the line between Newington and Hartford- super easy to find and get to! Chef/ owner and staff are so friendly. Their menu is extensive and have a lot of delicious items to try. I went with 2 empanadas- chicken & beef and an order of pernil and rice. The coating for the empanada was absolutely delicious and the beef and chicken were so flavorful. The pernil was SO tender and flavorful- definitely a must try item!! Rice was the perfect texture and flavor. I was hesitant to get a ton of food to try because I wasn't that hungry but the woman at the counter said it heats up so well and she was totally right. We really enjoyed the food we had at El Sitio the other night! The most impressive and unique menu item for us for the Jibarito sandwich which used a plantain instead of bread! I also thought their rice was incredible and so flavorful. The pernil, empanadas, wings, and ribs were all great too, and the alcapurrias de guineo was a new food for me that I really liked as well. Let me start by saying the staff is so personable and friendly! A friend put me on to El Sitio right after the gym so you can imagine the skepticism that came trying with a new Spanish spot after hitting a new personal record. We walked in and the woman inside immediately recognized my friend so I felt more optimistic. I ordered two empanadillas- one chicken and one beef, and french fries; my go-to quick bites and they were so delicious! My friend got the BEST tostones I've ever tried and I think I may have eaten more than they did! I've longed for a tostone so crisp and light since back when I lived in New York. The tostones paired with the mayo-kechup was a chef's kiss!! El Sitio is a perfect local find and I'm a fan! First time I tried them I enjoyed the food. The yellow rice was really good and the steak was good but they didn't put any sauce over it and it was dry. The second time I didn't enjoy as much. The rice was so nasty I had to throw it out, it was so oily and it had a really strong seasoning flavor (not in a good way). Also tried their chicken wings and they were hard and overly fried. And they gave me a burn bacalaito, can't believe they even served it looking like that. I also waited almost 30 minutes for my food and the staff was talking out loud bad about some customers. Stopped by El Sitio tonight for takeout. The inside is clean, well lit and homey with about 5-6 tables for seating and a counter to order. They had some already prepared items such as tres leches cake (I did not get it this time but heard others in the restaurant singing its praises), and a large board with the menu along with printed copies. Fortunately there was a good amount of parking, but inside I did notice there wasn't air conditioning (in case this matters to those who want to eat-in). I decided to order the Jibarito combo with yuca fries along with the alcapurria de guineo. The value was great-- for 17 dollars I have enough food for two filling lunches-- and the flavors of the food were really great as well. The pernil in the jibarito was tender, the plantain and the yuca fries were crispy and well seasoned, and the alcapurria was also rich and savory. I visited newish nearby Puerto Rican Eatery El Sitio after seeing some initial positive reviews. It's on the small side, but offers several tables for dine in as well as takeout. I opted for dine in. I ordered at the cash register and a server brought my food when it was done. The atmosphere was fine, but not a selling point for me. Service was very friendly. I ordered a beef empanada. It had a nice golden brown color and crisp texture. The beef tasted good. The oil flavor for the shell was a bit strong. Overall, it was a good empanada. I also ordered the Pollo Guisado, which the board described as stewed chicken. I chose yellow rice with beans as the side and it was good. I don't recall having had this chicken dish before, but I wanted to cover new ground since the other reviews seemed to focus on pernil and other pork dishes. I was expecting a well seasoned thicker sauce, but it was more like a chicken noodle soup broth. I don't know how the stew was cooked, but the chicken, potato and carrots in the stew had a soft texture that you would expect from something cooked in a crock pot. The bone in chicken pulled apart very easily. This dish was decent, but it didn't really pop for me in terms of flavors or textures. I later Googled "Pollo Guisado", and many of the images had a thicker and darker stew liquid, looked more seasoned and often included green olives. I was expecting something more like that, and that would have been more my style. If I could give El Sitio 3.5 Stars, I would. Since I can't, I have to say my experience was closer to 3 Stars than 4. Recently ordered dinner for my husband and I. Not my first time, haven't had a bad meal there until recently. I placed a large order for a few days and had to throw away the arroz con gandules for the following reasons. 1. Rice tasted too much of oregano 2. The rice was undercooked Everything else ordered was fine. I was disappointed though. I'm not going to cross them out for an off day. I don't know if someone else did the rice and if there was a taste test done prior to putting the rice out make sure it was done and that the taste was on point. read more
