I do have to gripe about the salsa - I have never had restaurant salsa with a grease-slick on the top before. Do they even taste check it? Went to El Sol de Mexico at noon on a weekday. Despite the hour, it was not crowded at all - which is hardly a surprise once you've eaten there. The quality of the food was abysmal and the inflated prices make it a poor value by anyone's standards. Chips were greasy and over-browned, making them slightly bitter. Salsa was made of canned tomatoes loaded with chili powder, if I'm not mistaken (?). Anyway, it was unlike any salsa I've ever tasted in Oregon, California, New Mexico, or Texas, whether homemade, store-bought, or from a restaurant kitchen. According to some reviewers, they charge for refills. That's fine - I didn't want more. Tostada was small for the price, and it came without any sides. They charge extra ($1.95) to put dollops of guacamole and sour cream on top, which seems excessive. Tortilla soup was the worst I've ever had. I'm used to different interpretations when it comes to this particular soup, but again, theirs was unlike anything I've ever experienced. It tasted to me like canned enchilada sauce diluted with beef broth. No vegetables, no meat, just a little Monterey Jack and some soggy tortilla strips submerged in a bland orange sauce. At $4.95 for a small, shallow bowl, it's astronomically overpriced. Service was okay, but most of the female servers seemed exasperated, pinched, and bitter, like they hated being forced to work there and had nearly reached the breaking point. And actually, I don't hold that against them. It can't be fun to work for a restaurant that overcharges and fails to produce, and neither can it be good for tips. On the upside, the interior is comfortable and attractive, parking is easy, and you get your food fast (which is not surprising given that most of your meal probably came straight out of a can, or nearly so). I love authentic Mexican cooking, but I'm no food snob and we're a long way from the border. Authenticity is not even the issue in this case. Even the heavily Americanized Mexican restaurants that resort to using pre-packaged food straight off the Sysco truck rate higher than El Sol de Mexico in my book. El Sol is an excellent authentic Mexican restaurant. Great service. Not just one person serving you. They work as a team to keep you in chips and drinks. Food comes pretty quickly. I like to go for lunch because I know I can be in and out quickly. Prices are very fair. About 10 bucks for lunch with a drink. read more

Oh man. Me and my wife had been looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant since we moved here two years ago. We went to the location on 9th Street which is tucked in between a mini-mart and a lumberyard. Okay...the food is good. But it just doesn't make up for the HORRIBLE service I have received every time I go there. The waitor and waitress I have had have both been rude and snappy. Its just not pleasant, and is no way to treat a paying customer. I really wish I knew their names so I could call them out. But I really wish I wouldn't have even left her a tip she was so rude she did not deserve one. If you are in the service industry you can't expect tips when you are a b*tch to all of your customers. I've been going here since I was a kid and it's my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant. The staff is so friendly, they're very accommodating of large groups, and the wait for food is never long. Always a great place to go for a meal out, but just as great to order to-go! Love love love El Sol. read more

I find it really difficult to find GOOD Mexican food in Corvallis, but El Sol does OK. It seems to be a crapshoot whether the experience will be amazing or just sort of "meh". Sometimes the food is fresh, hot, and tasty, and sometimes it's sort of lukewarm and soggy and sad. The service is VERY good. The owner? or the man in charge? is very eccentric and enjoyable and fun. The food is good enough, consistently enough, that despite the occasional issue we still come back here pretty often. Personally, if you want the best Mexican in Corvallis, I think you're better off at Taqueria Alonzo, but El Sol has a much larger menu, and it's still pretty damn good. They do use some interesting ingredients (cinnamon? parmesan cheese?), but the cinnamon on the beef is exceptionally delicious, and the parmesan on your burrito is really pretty tasty too. read more

I have never had such a bad meal. I was there with a party of 6 and we all agreed. You needed a chain saw for the meat, there was no flavor in any of the meals. We all kept asking for the salt shaker so we could get some flavor. I was the one paying for the meals and never once did the waiter address me nor did he offer to refill my drink. I live out of town and we are here on business for the week and we will not return. read more

Best Mexican food in town! Love all of their food especially the guacamole! Their margaritas are not over or under poured they have the perfect alcohol ratio. Their well tequila is better than most, but they carry some of the best premium tequilas. I am a tequila snob, and they make amazing margaritas. Their flavors are vast also like peach and blackberry... YUM! I have nothing but amazing things to say about this place! read more

The best Mexican in town... Loved the fried talapia fish meal and that's my only order whenever I go there.

Food is greasy and ill prepared. Tabke was dirty, staff was rude and waitress argued when the order was not done correctly. Actually charges for chips and salsa. No offer to refill drinks. Wont go back and will tell all I know to avoid. read more
