I am always on the hunt for great tacos, especially al pastor, and when a friend was visiting from out of state I was excited to try a new place and this one popped up. No issue with it being in the back of a grocery/convenience store, some of the best food comes from there, however to not have carnitas on the menu? Bummer. Also with the Cass Ave hipster crowd having a gathering in the parking lot should have been my second clue that something was amiss. They weren't the worst tacos I've ever had, but they were just bland. My friend got chicken and she said the only flavor was the lime juice she squeezed on, and my chorizo tasted just like some greasy ground pork but no spice at all. The asada was okay, and the shrimp was okay. Tortillas were fresh, and horchata was good but next time I'll know that if I want tacos in Detroit, like real Mexican tacos, it's Vernor Highway or bust. I stopped here because the restaurant I usually go to on my Mexican grocery run was closed. The food was so robust and full of flavor that we ordered duplicates to take home for later. Me - a simple cheese and avocado quesadilla accompanied by radishes, a grilled fresh whole jalapeño, an ample serving of grilled onions and fresh lime wedges. I ordered birria tacos for my family and I. Everything looked great and fresh. I took out my camera to snap a picture because I was excited. This was my first time having birria tacos. I've been wanting to try them for a while. Yeah so the tacos and soup were horrible. It had zero flavor. The taco taste like boiled meat and the soup taste like warm water. I seriously contemplated if I had caught covid because it was tasteless. If it wasn't for the taste of the orange pop I ordered, than I probably would have convinced myself that I have covid. Both parking lot and dining room packed when we visited around lunch hour. They opened another location in the Cass Corridor 5 year's ago inside a market and another Taco Truck in New Boston Mi area. Famous for the Full Size Double Stuffed Tacos at half price of restaurants around town. All come with Radishes, Lime, Grilled Onions n Salsa. I got 3 marvelous Al Pastor Tacos WOW fantastic. There are three ways to know this place is good before eating. One, it's a tiny, literal hole-in-the wall. It's actually really clever -- but the truck acts as the kitchen, and there's a dining room that is behind the truck if you want to sit down and eat. Each of the tables have three squeeze bottles of salsa. The salsa verde is my favorite -- not too spicy, but just enough kick to add some more flavor to the already flavorful tacos! The tacos come with so much meat that you can barely fold it together. They're topped with cilantro and fresh onions (of course, you can opt out), and a side of grilled onions, a grilled jalapeno, and limes. I've never had grilled onions served with my tacos, and at first, I was skeptical, but the onion flavor is just such a good addition, especially when paired with the fresh onions! I'm a fan! Two, upon entering the restaurant, you notice the Spanish on the TVs, and the Latinos filing up the tables. You instantly feel like you're going to be served authentic food. Out of all the places to eat in Mexicantown, people come to this tiny place in the middle of a parking lot. That's a good sign that you're going to get authentic food. The final giveaway is the high Yelp reviews -- and they deserve them all! The food comes out so quickly, and service is really polite and friendly! Payment is even based on the honor system; you order your food, then eat, and then tell them what you ordered on the way out. The food is so cheap too -- $5 for 3 tacos!! Talk about a diamond in the rough. Mind Brian S.'s review in noting that the taco truck is pushed back in a giant fenced-off parking lot. Also, this is a great truck to hit up during the winter as yes, there is in fact indoor seating. I'm ashamed to say that I never new this place existed. Who whould have guessed that Taco Truck parked in an industrial parking lot would actually have "brick and mortor" indoor seating behind it. Large tacos with all the standard toppings. I tried the cabeza which was very tender, but slightly on the bland side. The combo asada/chorizo taco was excellent with just the right mix with neither overpowering the other. The al pastor pork was also excellent. It had that moist, sweet taste the you can expect from good al pastor. I did think that all of their 3 sauces were on the whimpy side, neither of the 3 sent my tongue into overdrive. I've been coming here since it opened. I refused to review it because a) This is a hidden gold mine that is targeted toward the local community and b) Its really good. Sometimes Yelping ruins places, and I hope this doesn't happen here. I too enjoy being first to review or the duke of a place but I really wanted this place to stay hidden. Oh well! Maybe i had set my expections too high -or- maybe El Taco Veloz was experiencing an off day...whatver the case may be, the tacos were not THAT noteworthy : / Based on Brian's review, we probably should've ordered the burritos. Instead, we opted for tacos. Pollo, Chorizo, and Al Pastor, along with a side order of Jarritos (Tamarindo) to wash it all down. Now for the highlights of our meal: The fresh corn tortillas were fantastic! Each taco was $1.50, and they'e larger than your average-sized taco. I can usually down about 3-4 tacos, and i was good on just 2...did i eat two, of course not, i HAD to fit in a 3rd! The Al Pastor was my favorite. Tasty, juicy, and overall great! Now for my gripe, the Chorizo meat was absolutely aweful! You'd think the gray-ish hue would've been a red flag, but no, i HAD to try it. As for the Pollo (aka Chicken), the flavor was off. My hispanic friend from Los Angeles introduced me to this place late one night, and well.. let's just say it might have not been in the most charming location. It's one of those places where you lock your car at least 7 times and hope you don't find it sitting on cylinder blocks by the time you return. Nonetheless, I grew up in the mean streets of Seven Mile for a good 3 months.. so I ain't no stranger to a little bit of danger. You order your food from a truck that takes only cash and you are serviced by spanish-speaking employees. If you don't know much spanish, don't sweat it.. they know enough english to take your order. You can try to speak your broken spanish to them, but they will likely make fun of you once you enter the seating area like they did to my friend. Now to the food.. it is crazy how this burrito was this large and filling for under 7 bucks. The cheese was really gooey and good. Also, their homemade salsa was an amazing compliment to the burrito. The service is also really fast and the dining area feels really authentic - they have spanish soap operas running all day, some weird tasting rice milk dispenser, and what looks to be some blood stains on the bathroom doors as if there were some Mexican cartel drug deals going on there. They have tasty amazing tacos and quesadillas(asada, tripas, chorizo, al pastor, cabeza y pollo- beef, chitterlings, pork sausage, spicy pork, beef head and chicken) burritos, quesadillas, tortas, tostadas de ceviche and cocteles.
