We were in mood to go somewhere off of the beaten path so we took a ride to Paterson and found this place. After reading menu we decided to give it a try. Parking on street is very hard but they have a small lot in the back for parking. We were greeted very quickly and warmly as we walked in and seated promptly. The menu is extensive with all the Colombian and Peruvian dishes. Sandra had the liver and it was delicious. It was tender and not chewy and flavorful. I haven't had a whole fish in awhile so that's what I went with. Absolutely fantastic. Spot on flavor and a generous size. When I saw yucca and onions on menu I just had to get it. The seasoning and flavor was delicious I loved it. Service was friendly and warm. It was our first time here but left feeling we have been there many many times. Will definitely return. Stopped by this place because my fiancée's step father used to come here a long time ago and claimed that it was really good! And well he was absolutely correct! The service, food and atmosphere was fantastic! When we first walked in at noon, we were a little skeptical being the one and only patrons there but soon after we sat the people joined. The new location is a terrific upgrade over the old corner locale: the main dining area has more tables and more space for moving around, the lunch counter is just as long as the old one, and now the patio and small window seating area really allows the owners to pull in ever more traffic. The biggest bonus to the move? Five parking spots in the back -- which locals will easily turn into eight -- eases the pressure of finding a place to park in a busy section of P-Town. Of course, the move is nothing without the great food coming along, and it did. The Huevos Rancheros is still their absolute best breakfast option, and I think the coffee and salsa picante may have even gotten better. I cannot wait to see what they do with the patio when the weather gets better. Such a great move, I really hope Paterson supports the new location and turns it into an anchor business for the area. The food was ok but got me upset was the owner. She was very rude to her employees and still the employees were nice and polite, she was even rude to a customer, so very sad! You take care of your employees and they will take care of care of you!!! This was my first time there since she took over the business and it will be my last. I'm a big fan of rice and beans, fried sweet plantains, and avocado. Maybe that's why I didn't understand ex-gf. She was very selective about her food. She only likes what she likes. She was not an adventurous eater. I don't think the food here is exotic. We came here for dinner because she tried an Argentinan empanana at work and wanted her fix. I told her that we could try the Colombian version here. She pretty much did not like anything I ordered. It was very disheartening that she was disgusted by avocados and beans. I do consider the empanadas from pan pizza the best Colombian empanadas ever but she didn't like the ones here. I like this place a lot. I just don't come here because of the neighborhood. Ok first off, not sure why the description says this Is a Mexican restaurant. It is not. It's a Dominican restaurant. Stereotypical much? Lol Anyways, El Tipico is your standard run of the mill Dominican restaurant: portions are large and cheap and the food is good. Not great, just good. There are a ton of better options in Paterson but this will do if I'm in the area and don't feel like going somewhere else. I recommend the sancocho on Sundays and their Pollo guisado is pretty tasty. I only gave three stars cause like I said, the food isn't spectacular. Plus, the restaurant is really small and the servers could be more attentive. Not bad though. read more

Longtime Favorite Wins Again We moved to Wayne 19 years ago and visited El Tipico first about 17 or 18 years ago. My two sons have stopped here frequently since then, but I had not. I should not have waited. We had the El Tipico Especial, two with pork chops and one with steak. There was enough food on one plate to feed a family. A large portion of white rice was cupped on top to catch the red beans. A fried egg covered the different kinds of meat. Sweet plantain made the meal ALIVE with flavor. My fifteen year old and our friend scoured their plates. After a chicken empanada and a beef empanada, I barely finished half of the main course. I favor the chicken empanada over the beef version, and could have been happy with that and a triple helping of plantain and red bean and rice. read more

Overall the place is just ok. The place is small so the tables are real close to each other. The service is ok. I guess it depends on what mood the waitresses are in. The parking is horrible since 21st ave is a busy street. I have to drive around the restaurant at least 3 times to find parking. read more

Love the huevos rancheros and maduros, and cafe con leche, on a sunday morning; and the staff is super friendly. The waitress calls me 'mi amor' which is totally awesome. If you are around Paterson and want authentic (inexpensive) South American food in a comfortable atmosphere, check this place out. One of my favorites. read more

I really love El Tipico. Though i'm Irish-American, I love all sorts of cuisine. My friend José who grew up in Paterson started bringing me here. And every once in a blue moon i make it back. The food is really basic, fill-you-up, fantastically priced fare. It's not a 5-star bistro (generic frozen(?) mixed veggies come as a side with some dishes). But the main courses can be truly extraordinary. My favorites are the Fish fillet in Coconut milk and the Black Bean soup served in a bowl bigger than my head! Things are definitely a little out of the ordinary as there are hard-boiled eggs in the soup. But all in all, the food is awesome, especially for the price. A life-saver when i was broke and hungry attending college at nearby MSU. Much like the other gringo ordering coffee, i've asked for cold milk with my fish and gotten some giggles, but the ladies are always really nice & patient since i try my best to order in my clumsy spanish. Regarding the person who complained about parking: It's downtown Paterson just off of Market Street!! Are you kidding? Growing up in Paterson this is one restaurant that has been here for yeeeaaarsss, and looks like a small casual restaurant with home-like decor and ambience. There is no hostess so you can pretty much sit wherever you would like, overall the servers there have been there quite some time and know what they're doing . Always been very kind and courteous towards their customers . One thing to understand about this restaurant is that it is in Paterson and it is in a very Hispanic area, this isn't to say that it's "low quality", but rather to overall understand it's simplistic feel to this restaurant. Anyways, I ordered to-go grilled chicken breast ONLY. (Usually comes with white rice, French fries) during the lunch hour. They have a lunch special for 5.95 but it's just one specific plate as the option (kinda like menu of the day). There was only one server and two men eating separately. Food didn't take too long to come out & my server quickly attended everyone while making small talk. Overall this menu has costarican, Peruvian, & Colombian food with some prices too high, but well portioned for those with a big appetite! One of my fav Spanish food restaurants. They recently moved up the road and the new place is more spacious. Waitresses are always friendly.

No more tiny place "hole in the wall" as some reviewers said. I went yesterday for the first time and they have moved a few doors down and it's much bigger and there's even parking. The food is awesome! Very delicious and truly home made. It seems owner is Dominican but food is really Colombian/Peruvian so it makes for the best combination of Latin food.
