Upon reading other reviews here on yelp, this was my "suggestion" to my gf as the place for dinner. Since we were staying at a resort in Guanica, the drive was approximately 45 minutes in unfamiliar territory and at night. I used Yelp's "get directions" and it was perfectly spot on, no miss.
From the highway, you pass major shopping strip malls. The area just prior to the restaurant seemed ok--maybe even middle class, if not slightly sketchy to a non-native (I'm from Baltimore City, and that means I don't sketch out easily). The bright signage right at the intersection identified the spot without a doubt. They have a small private lot which gave the excursion a "green light go", since I wouldn't be walking down some dark Puertorican alleyway or street to eat---chance of mugging greatly decreased. It also seemed that they had a parking lot monitor there---he was there from the start to finish of dinner.
From the outside, you can peep in to the dining area and see that it is a classy place to eat. With shorts, flip flops, and opened up button-up shirt, I was probably a bit underdressed but that didn't bother anyone. Two other young couples dressed to the nines came in also for late dinner.
Upon entry, we were welcomed with a warm smile and handshake! The first time ever in my world travels and high end restaurants, have I ever been welcomed with a handshake...what an impression! While my Spanish was acceptable, it was still rusty and our server/host immediately shifted in to English mode. His English was a bit better than my Spanish, so with the two efforts, we were perfectly accommodated.
We ordered some Croquettas de Amarillo... and they were out of it--which our server profusely and shamefully apologized. So we changed our appetizer order to empanadillas of some sort and they were hella delicious---the sauce...OMG the sauce.
My companion ordered the Isla del Encanto which was a mofongo topped with a criole rice and bean mixture and finally roasted shrimp and steak made-to-order. I ordered the Ontario which was steak on a bed of plantain chips drizzled with their special sauce. We had a Chilean white wine with dinner.
After savoring morsel after morsel of comida Boriquen delicioso...my gf ordered me a shot of high-end bourbon (I suppose she wanted to get me drunk and take advantage of me---which she did). All in all, a bottle of wine, shot of high-end bourbon, appetizer and two entrees came out to a measly $94 including tax. From a place like this, I expected to pay much more especially on the Island of Enchantment.
For the fact, that dining was memorably pleasurable, the service was impeccably warm and accommodating, the prices reasonable, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, that I would go out-of-my-way to seek this place out next time in the Ponce area...The Turpial gets another coveted five-star Yelp rating. read more
