I-4 is such a pain in the butt driving home from Orlando. I used Waze to take the back way home to avoid I-4. I was hunger and wasn't sure what to get to eat. It had steak, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, pork, onion, jalapeño & cactus grilled to perfection! Came with rice, beans & an amazing sauce. So good! They do have good prices here, especially for a Latino supermarket in Haines city. However, the smell by the meat market area is quite strong... and not strong as if "meat" it smells like something rotten the smell goes from the meat market areal to halfway throughthe ailes. They added two additional registers, which is great with the flow of customers. We did not had the opportunity to eat here since we were just doing some quick shopping. read more

They have the most AUTHENTIC mexican food by far and I am from CALIFORNIA! Its cheap and made fresh! Also the bakery section - $.69 cents EACH any pastry you grab and fill your bag with! Of course these are mexican pastries, and there is a guide map picture for anyone who is not familiar with mexican cookies, cakes etc. They sell Tacos for $1+ these are the real mexican tacos that are small with 2 freshly made in the house corn tortillas with your choice of meats and onions/cilantro. The burrito is $4+ with your choice of meats, with lettuce sour cream cheese avocado and I cannot recall other items inside but it is huge (thick) and they slice the burrito in half for you and wrapped in foil. The ratio of tortilla to ingredients inside -- lets say you barely see the tortilla when you it sliced for you! Thats how much stuff they put in it. The Tamales are $1+ and its a choice of chicken or pork. The portion is half of a full tamale but still enough to hit the spot. They have a menu if you ask for it of items they sell at the Hot Deli and it seems like they get alot of call ins for pickup because you see tons of bags waiting to get picked up by customers. This is a supermarket with hot deli and meat butcher type section and it is clean!! I did not get the chance to walk around the supermarket but what I do know is the hot deli and the bakery bins are amazing! The staff do understand english here so do not be afraid to speak in English. This review is for the restaurant. I was craving Mexican and stumbled upon this place on Yelp. They have an extensive menu that isn't publicly posted (you have to ask for it). There were so many different things I wanted to try, but settled on ordering 2 carne asada tacos ($1.25 each) and 1 shrimp taco ($1.99) along with a side of yellow rice and decried beans ($1.99). The tacos paired with the salsa verde were exceptionally flavorful. The shrimp was lightly grilled and perfectly cooked. The carne asada was very meaty flavored and the portions were generous. The yellow rice was a great filler and though I love refried beans theirs was a bit too salty for my preference. If the beans were 50% less salty then it would be perfect. Overall, I will probably be back to try more items as the quality and price is unbeatable. read more

They carry such a large amount of stock which is piled up high. Dark and narrow with the best smells and sights! We try a new ingredient each time we shop. The fish selection is small but the seafood market is next door in a different strip mall. Get the blue corn tortillas made in house. The butcher section is well stocked. The hot bar is delicious. I shop at the store at least once a month sometimes twice the butcher the meats are very good. They have homemade tortillas and corn tortillas reasonably priced. I haven't really tried their bakery items but I can say their hot food is amazeballs. I've tried almost every item and have not been let down. The staff is mostly Mexican, granted they are a mexican supermarket but they are the best in customer service! I try to make my taco stop once a week, I change it up from beef, pork or chicken. A few weeks ago, I called at 7am right when they opened and special requested an order for a birthday cake. There a quite a few local Mexican supermarkets and restaurants in the area, but El Zocalo is perhaps the best of both in Haines City. On the grocery side, there is a great selection of what anyone might need from a grocery store. However, if you want to find ingredients and products from Hispanic countries (especially Mexico), there is no better place that I have found in the area. The fresh meat and seafood counter has a selection of well priced items, including freshly made chorizo and pre-seasoned fajita meats. Also, the store freshly baked goods including tortillas, cakes and a wide selection of Mexican desserts. On the restaurant side, this is hands-down the best Mexican food in the area...and maybe one of the best restaurants in the area period. If you are looking for Tex-Mex style covered in sour cream and cheddar cheese Mexican food, look elsewhere. The food here is authentic and delicious. It is served, cafeteria style from a huge steam tray that has daily specials alongside everyday items. There is also a menu, but you won't get to it as the prepared food looks so good that you won't feel the need to read it. Don't let stereotypes stop you from trying things...the food is not all spicy if you are concerned about the heat factor associated with Mexican food. The best part is that the prices are great and the servings are huge, meaning leftovers get to come home and be enjoyed later! First off.. Anyone living near this place is truly spoiled. I live 50 miles away, but travel for work often. I've been to this place, er... re-routed my path through Haines City about 7 or 8 (edit: 12+) times now. The good: Great prices for outstanding food.. my god, where do I start. 1.25 tacos are solid.. Tortas are exactly what they should be. Platillos are outstanding.. from chicken to enchiladas to pernil to res. The selection of fresh food here astounds me, and I've done a lot of Mex all over the state. This place is like a Mexican Publix, or something. You people living around there have no idea how lucky you are.. or maybe you do. Update: El Zocalo continues to impress. The only place that I've been able to find fresh squash blossoms and every cut of bistec at the meat counter. Speaking of carniceria, they carry goat (chivo). I bought 3# and it came out wonderful in my guisado verde. Also, i found a great food hack - order the torta with pernil. There's only 10 pounds of it sitting in a steam tray just feet away. It seems to get loaded on more than any other meat. Three times in a row now.. (dont tell them I said anything :-) The Bad: This place can get really busy in the prepared food cafe. We had come here once before for produce, but were not impressed. It had looked old and not at all fresh. This time, we went in search of a butcher that wasn't as expensive as Publix. Wow, were we surprised! I had no idea how large their butcher counter was! We didn't see it at first because we were looking in the regular meat coolers. The whole back wall is the butcher/seafood area. Lots of guys working waiting for your order. If you don't see the meat in the cooler that you want, go back there. I saw small whole chickens in the cooler (not worth my time), but the butcher had large ones! Even chorizo that they make themselves. After stocking up on meats, we went by the bakery area. Grab a tray and tongs and load up! Take the tray to the register to pay. The pastries we bought were less than $1.00 each. We didn't get a chance to try the hot food, but it had a line and all of the tables were full. So it must be good. Stop by if you want to save money on your meats. They may not be as pretty as Publix, but I can deal with that to save some $$$$. read more

The asada and chicharrones are a must but for some reason whenever I've been there, the chicarrones have been sold-out. THAT'S HOW GOOD THEY ARE! When is the last time I've been somewhere that's had something even sold-out?! GEEBUS. The burritos are $3.99 and a total steal. I heard the tortas are delicious but have yet to get one, my stomach won't expand further after 4 tacos and 1 burrito to fit in a torta but maybe one day... Forgot to mention dessert, it's all good!
