I have read so many terrible things about how the elderly are treated in these kinds of places and thus I was really worried, especially when I left them there and moved home to California. During the pandemic, and even up until today, Alexian Village has a very high level of staff turnover at all levels, which usually indicates a management issue. However, I don't know the real cause. But as my "parents" have now been there for months, I've noticed that most of the people who serve them seem to be decent people who really care about the elders in their facility. Especially Helen at the front desk, who is a remarkable, wonderful person they are so lucky to have! (Beware of the other front desk woman, though. She seems to hate everyone and everything!) I've also learned that the dire situations my parents report are often not so accurate when I actually investigate what's happening. I am learning to give Alexian Village much more of the benefit of a doubt in these situations. They are, after all, doing a job I was no longer capable of doing myself. The ideal of course in an AL is that your relative is supremely happy, relieved and delighted. That's not likely to happen, no matter how angelic your loved ones are or are not. (That's a new realization for me!) Moving into an AL means that the party is coming to an end, and that's got to be hard for any elder to accept. Now that I have less concern about mistreatment, lack of food, lack of services, mean staff, stolen items, stolen clothing, unavailable healthcare and all the other things mine have complained about, I see that a lot of the drama is really just their unhappiness to be in AL in the first place. I believe Alexian Village is doing the best they can under the difficult circumstances made more difficult by the pandemic. It's irrational to expect this to be easy on your elders or yourself. It just won't be. Breathe. PS - There's one very bad review here, with one star. It talks about how often they change her mom's diaper. I think that poster is messed up, because Alexian V. is an assisted living, not a nursing home. Only nursing homes provide that level of nursing care. She may have posted in the wrong place?

Their whole demeanor and attitude is that of angels, compassion, empathy, love..When he was in the hospital, he was not receiving the proper pain management, they kept delaying the hospitals hospice program while my dad was dying in pain. I was desperate to get him home. Alena, the administrator, moved mountains to make that happen. They got my dad home in less than 18 hours, they were by my father's bedside within two hours of me calling desperate for help, which felt like a miracle during such a difficult time. Daniel, the nurse who came to the hospital, was so attentive and caring such a such a genuine person. And once we were home, nurse Julie and nurse Grace took over and truly went above and beyond. They made sure the bed oxygen tanks supplies and meds was delivered before my dad even got home.They made sure my dad was comfortable, out of pain, and surrounded by dignity and respect--something he was not receiving in the hospital. there was also a Sweet CNA that came to help as well, Because of them, my dad was able to pass peacefully at home, just as he deserved. That means everything to me my father and our family. All of my father's friends and loyal family were able to come visit with him before he passed the next morning.. I highly recommend this hospice agency to anyone going through end-of-life care for a loved one--or even for themselves. Don't wait until the last minute. However, we interacted the most with Grace who was on-call at the time we engaged them and helped my Dad a good bit during his last couple of days. Grace was super patient with us when we asked lots of questions about his care and hospice in general. LifeChoice also provided a rabbi for us and I think my father really appreciated that the rabbi visited with him for over an hour. I think they provided my father a lot of peace and comfort during his final days. My only regret was not engaging them sooner. It took a week and they set up an appointment, which got cancelled the night before. The worker could no longer help us. They called a week later to say its hard to find a worker for 3 hours a day 5 days a week that most of our care givers want full time. We haven't heard from them since. When I called today they felt when they said that its hard to find someone for 3 hours that meant they were done helping us. We would have been open to 4 hours less days it didn't come up. It stressful enough to have an aging parent but then this is how were dealt with.

This facility does not make their elderly clients a priority, and it is very clear as to how it is ran! We almost had a med error as they have a patient at their facility with a similar last name and if family wasn't paying attention, she would have been given the wrong medication! We continue to have to call the facility to ensure that she is being showered, her laundry is being washed, and her room is cleaned appropriately! Of late, the biggest issue has been the facility being infested with big bugs, It took them over 48 hours to address while my grandmother slept on her couch because her mattress was covered in bedbugs and they told us there was no other place to relocate her to, So we took her out of the facility for four weeks so they could deal with the issue. After several emails and phone calls, because they do not do as they say they are going to do, they finally got her a new apartment and did not even bother to move all of her things. Our family had to take on the burden of moving her once again! We asked for financial compensation for the four weeks that she was not there at the facility and still have not gotten an answer and that has been over two months ago! We continue to be unhappy with this facility as they do not make their residence a priority. I do not recommend this facility to anyone for their elderly loved ones!

My mother-in-law moved into Asbury Court with her husband, she suffered from dementia. Good for him…read morebecause he is reasonably self-sufficient, but not so good for her. From what I observed Asbury Court is not well equipped to help elders who are in need of special care and especially those with dementia. Public Medicare assisted elder care care suffers from under staffing, low pay and unqualified caregivers who are not properly trained. Asbury Court is no exception. Their website lists memory care, please do not be fooled. The only memory care that I witnessed was over medication to be placed in a docile and non-functional state of mind and body. While some attendants are kind and empathetic at Asbury Court, many lack the skills and motivation to deal with difficult cases like my mother-in-law and her family members. Is there a better public funded facility out there for elders who suffer from dementia? I hope so, and maybe you can find one! Our baby boomer population generation is fueling a 75% increase in the number of people age 65 and older requiring nursing home care.

Caring.com put Harbor House in touch with me and from the moment I spoke with Savannah, the executive director, I knew this place was special. Savannah actually did the assessment at the big, fancy, expensive nursing home and confirmed what I already suspected. We moved her out of there and Savannah actually drove out there and helped me move her stuff and my mom (I was visiting mom out of town). Over the next few days, I got a very up-close look at Harbor House and how the staff interacts with their residents. I popped in at unexpected times and walked through the adjacent buildings. I never saw a deviation from the excellence of care I saw the first time - not even once. I never saw residents mistreated or spoken to condescendingly, like I did at the other place. The caregivers are amazing women. Sam, Becky, Brittany, are really hands on nurses. Sam spent tons of time with me, discussing my mother's medications. The doctors call you and I spoke with Dr. Ernst about my mom for an hour! I couldn't even get the doctor at the big, fancy place to return my call! The place is small and it's warm and cozy - like a previous commenter said, it's not like an institution at all. It's like a home. My mom has an adorable sunny, private room with her own bathroom. She's always got someone there to help her. All I can say about this place except is that it's exceptional. I have learned that big, fancy nursing homes are usually understaffed and can't manage the needs of their patients. This place CARES for their patients. I don't need crystal chandeliers and big lobbies. I need individualized care with people who treat the elderly like the human beings they are. Harbor House does this. The owner of this facility needs to be very proud of his staff and his philosophies. I hope they never change. Amazing place.
