However one person's trash is another person's "holy cow! I remember this but could never afford it!" And since pricing is also a little random and subject to subtle undercurrents in retrocomputing/golden age audio nostalgia/parts becoming unobtanium, you may roll your eyes at the price or cackle at the incredible deal as you put it in your basket. It's a Time Machine and one of the few remaining of its breed. It's also hilarious and disorienting to turn back and look at an aisle that you thought you completely scrutinized, only to find whole shelves of items that you missed. That's WILD. 5/5 store and 95% of employees. I was trying to get some materials for an arduino project at college and I needed a few things like some diodes and a soldering kit. I saw a box with a few ziplock bags with the diodes in it, and on the box the price was $16.99 which made sense to me because you can find a 100 pcs diodes for $6, it was obviously more but I was like a'ight let's get it one ziplock. I grabbed the soldering kit and the soldering stand and headed to the register where a guy started helping me. While he was separating the pieces we overheard this Spanish speaking lady "help" a couple customers than only spoke Spanish, one was in the middle of asking if they fixed lamps and she yelled at him stating "we only sell parts! We don't fix anything here" and we thought it was kind of rude but were minding our business. Then after the guy separated all pieces he said the total was going to be $125. It didn't make sense to me so I just asked why that amount and what was the price for each bag he had separated the things into. This lady took over the transaction because the guy was under the weather and that is totally fine, what is not totally fine is that she started having an attitude and saying things at us like "next time grab a bag or ask us to separate it first!" I didn't even wanted it separated but I guess that is how the measure the diodes. I told her that was too expensive for me, so I asked her to give me only 150 instead of 300 diodes. Well, I'm sorry I made her work I guess -mind you that the other guy that wasn't even feeling good did all the work-, but this lady rolled her eyes and repeated everything she had been saying about getting a bag and to talk to someone first. We left without getting anything like the other customers who were mistreated, terrible sad about this lady attitude, everyone else on the store were really welcoming and helpful. Just be prepared to be yelled at if this girl is at the register. read more

Electronics Parts Outlet has been around for 30+ years. Great place to find odds & ends for electronics. The staff is great too!! It is a electronic GEEKs paradise!! You can build so many nice projects from parts here. If Lowe's or Home Depot doesn't have your electronic parts then EPO will have it!! My latest shout out for EPO is that they started recycling batteries. Batteries PLus (& Bulbs) quit recycling batteries so I found a new place to do recycle batteries!! This is all kinds of batteries including Lithium Ion or alkaline batteries. read more

Amazing place in business for over 30 years. It is a true gem - now that Radio Shack is gone; it's hard to find an electronic store that actually has parts. Or you simple go online but really have no one to ask. The store is a combination of the new and the old. If you look closely you can find some nice antiques for the house! Or if you want to repair that tube amp - this is the place to go. Prices are great - just so we are clear even some better than Amazon! Enough said!! Come get that capacitor or electric motor for your son's toy. You could even find some items for that old amp you don't want to through away! As far as I know, this is the only Electronics parts place left in Houston given that Radio Shack mostly has consumer electronics now days and are going away too. They have a lot of parts here from resisters to power supplies to connectors to that weird looking thing that you blew up in the electrical box. Things are really hard to find there unless you ask someone for help which at times is not easy, but eventually you'll find someone who knows where things are. read more

You have to go here and experience it. They have the parts. The tools. The antiques. The things you didn't know exist but are super helpful to have. It's amazing to find this stock of parts anywhere, let alone a place in Houston where you can see all the parts. Check here before looking online. I saw a whole row of non-resettable thermal fuses and some fuses I've never seen. They also have some cool salvaged components. Maybe the craziest part is that the people working here actually know where (and what) the stuff is. Hard to describe - but highly recommended. read more

I'll be honest, moving from Los Angeles to Baton Rouge was a total downer for my love of all things used electronics. I had Apex Electronics in the Valley, W6TRW swap meets each month and other assorted places to go. Moved to the dirty dirty and I'm relegated to Best Buy, really small ham fests and monthly auctions at the state surplus. Meh... My son is into mechanical keyboards and I had found this place on a Google search before I got to Houston. I had to drag him kicking and screaming out of the hotel room as he had gotten a keyboard from Fry's and wanted to play with it. I drove down the road from my hotel and we got there with only 45 minutes before they closed. I walked in and almost cried. I had come home, this was my place. Isles and isles of electronics parts, new and used. Hundreds of nooks and crannies jammed with every part imaginable for doing anything electronic diy, repair, robotics, mad scientist tinkering, etc. I'm an audio engineer and synthesizer nerd so I went to the back, to go through all their gear. I love just looking at old technology. They had plenty of old test gear lining the tops of cabinets and old computers everywhere! When one of the staff asked if we needed any help, I told them I was looking for old computer keyboards, we found their current selection, but my son being a mechanical keyboard expert (more like snob) wasn't too happy. Trying to teach him the value of digging to find the good deal or the right thing, this is the kind of place that sometimes the staff may not know what they have. The best kind of place ever (like Apex Electronics in the Valley in LA, look it up, insanity). One of the owners (?) walked us around to a far isle and pointed at a keyboard hanging from the ceiling on a string, and there it was a keyboard from a Texas Instruments Silent 700 (introduced in 1971) the year my son's old man (me) was born. They wanted $30 for it, so we got it. At that moment my kid learned something from this old man, that going to old places like this does turn up gold. Passing the baton of searching for junk has been complete. I can now die a happy man. My son will continue my quest for hoarding old electronics where he goes. We have already planned our next trip to Houston so that we can spend an entire day here, we're saving up a budget to spend some $$$ here. There's other things to see and do in Houston, but for me this was one of the highlights of my trip, and for the 45 minutes I was there it was time well spent. We will be back. read more

Had to approach someone for assistance, helped for a bit, took a call then completely forgot about me despite being in his view. Not much help from the second employee. EPO has possibly the best customer service you can ever find at a place similar to Radioshack (but with wider selection). Employees actually know a thing or two about electronics! I was looking for a simple on/off button for my next project, and one of their employees (this old man that's been working there for years) really helped me out. He stopped what he was doing, walked me over to the section, and thoroughly explained to me the difference between types of switches (i.e DPDT, toggles, etc), and what works best for my project. I have been here for many years and I still find that this place is the ultimate source for specialty computer parts, capacitors, resistors, soldering equipment, LED's, etc. read more

Where's your comfort level in IT and electronics? (A) I freak out easily and just want that thing... that plugs into the wall.. and makes the other thing light up. (B) Um, I would consider myself "IT lite." I can do basic troubleshooting and set-up a computer. I've built my own desktop. (C) My goal is to be on Mythbusters, build my own R2D2, and go to the Make Magazine Makers Faire. If you answered (C), this is the place for you. I found the SVGA cable (6 ft) @ $14.95 to be a little pricey, but you could definitely nerd out here with all the parts. EPO is the kind of place that makes going to Fry's look like a sissy move. "What -- you're not going to build your OWN solid state hard drive from scratch?!?" EPO is the place to get component-level parts at a much better price (and selection) than your neighborhood Radio Shack. Plus, there are so many other items, often bordering on the bizarre (specimen jars?), that you just have to wander all around and check it out. And if you have questions, there are folks there that can offer you advice on your projects. If there's a nerd in your family, his multimeter will point to EPO as Mecca. One shopping note -- many bargains can be found here, but some things such as tools and other items that can easily be found elsewhere may be cheaper elsewhere. Enjoy! read more

I needed capacitors to repair a car circuit board. Since Radio Shack and Fry's are long gone I searched online to find if there was any local retailer that sold electronic parts. I went here based on the reviews. They had exactly what I needed and for a great price. The staff is friendly and the store is stunning. The things like antique radios, car stereos, VCRs, CRT televisions, etc...are amazing to look at. I walked around for 45 minutes to just take it all in. I plan to go back at some point to look around some more and buy something made before the digital age. Please support this business and go here first instead of Amazon if you need parts for electronics. I have never been in a store like this because they simply do not exist. VERY difficult to navigate through the isles to find what you're looking for, but they pretty much got it all when it comes to electrical components, connectors, wires, etc. When radioshack doesn't suffice, this is ny only hope. I work in the car stereo industry and if I run out of supplies or an installation comes to a halt due to an unforseen diode electrode or resistors, I'm off to E.P.O. I can't say much for the quality of the connectors cuz it is usually the cheaper stuff but enhanced with some electrical tape it works just fine in a sticky situation. I have seen that the older gentleman behind the counter is smarter than most M.I T engineers and can answer any question. So that helps when I stand there looking at stuff with my Napoleon Dynamite look. read more

This is an electronics junkie's "I gotta have it now" go-to shop. The customer service is top-notch. These folks know their products/electronics/etc. NOTE: if you know how to solder, this is your place. If you're looking for a cheap stereo... um, go elsewhere. EPO sells resistors, capacitors, DPDT knife switches, etc. They also have some "weird cheap stuff." It's a good place for Burners or people looking to "blinky bits" to their costumes/bicycles/etc. It's often cheaper to get this stuff online. However, if you're just building one circuit... or need some ideas/help... well, this is THE best place in Houston for that. In fact, it might be the ONLY place for that. I suspect that RadioShack was like this thirty years ago. Oh, well, except that you can score cheap recycled parts (e.g., servos, fans, etc). Of course, they're cheaper than RadioShack (where you'll pay over $2 for a $0.25 555 timer). read more

This place stocks everything from cold war surplus military grade electronics that could have launched Spudnick. To the common wires and cables that we all live with but would rather do without. They have everything you need to fix your 8 track or build your own predator drone. So unless you need to invent something RIGHT NOW! I can get all of this for 1/5 the price online. After waiting for 30 minutes in line while Ray talked to the people in front of me like they were friends he didn't even talk to me when I said hi. This is a really great place. Never knew about it until just recently. Incredible selection of new electronic parts and great vintage audio finds as well. Other interesting items too. I had a project I wanted to do, knew the result, but no idea how to get there. Chris was just incredibly helpful, identifying the items I needed and explained how to put it all together. I got delayed on the project and then could not remember what he said. I returned and he very patiently went over it again, even roughing it together for me. The associate who greeted me listened to what I was trying to create and quickly guided me to the right parts to help me complete my project. Each time I said, "hey - can I do this?"
