I brought in my Akai reel to reel which I had previously taken to Bammel TV. The issue I was having was an intermittent issue where one channel would not work properly. Bammel took my $150 diagnostic money and said the unit needed to be cleaned for an additional $150. I picked up the unit as is and took it to Save On Sound. Mr Tran diagnosed as a bad preamplifier. A few days later I picked up the unit and have not had this issue since the repair. Save On Sound is where I should have gone in the first place. read more

I have two vintage Sansui receivers. Both were having somewhat similar issues with losing a right or left channel. Troubleshot enough to realize that it was probably an amp in the receiver and brought it to Tom to diagnose. He recommended rebuilding the boards at a cost of about $600-$700. I paid, expecting the problem to be fixed. When I brought them home, problem still occurred. Tried troubleshooting with new speakers, different speaker wires, different TTs, several different external devices on different inputs, headphones, etc. Problem still linked to receiver. Took equipment back 3 times. He would "fix" something and it still occurred when I got it home. Finally took my entire audio setup to him. He had it a week and said he'd cleaned a switch and everything was fine. Brought it home and it occurred again. Wasted a lot of money and time going back and forth. Would not recommend his services. read more

I have a pioneer Tt 909 which I mistakenly removed the head block on. I needed the belt replaced and the capstan roller replaced. Took it to a competitor on 1960 and paid $123.00 for the check out and quoted 1,200 to 1,400 dollars. To realign the heads and would have to buy an alignment tape. I took it to Save On Sound and $97.00 dollars later plays and records great. I now have a pioneer 1280 in his shop getting a recap done. Will bring all my vintage repairs to this company read more

I've taken two 70s Marnatz solid state receivers and a tape deck in. He fixed the problems. He recapped some capacitors and replaced a belt on my tape deck. It's a one man operation, he's English is so so, and he is expensive. Austin Stereo probably does better and defitnitely cheaper work, but it's a bit of drive. read more

I dropped my turn table two weeks ago to solder a cable. Paid $30 the amount the asian man, Tom, asks for. Didn't hear back from him although he said it would take a week to solder them back. I gave him two weeks, went to pick it up and he had lost my turn table. Couldn't even remember where it was. Came back after a while to the front of the counter to tell me it would be $180 to fix it. I asked for my turn table back and he was very hesitant. He said a lot was wrong with it yet he had not solder the cable nor opened it. I place a little sign on it to tell because I do not trust mechanics or people who "fix things"- took my turn table back and left. Unfixed. Told him to keep the $30 dollars although he didn't even open the thing to clean it as I asked him. He is full of shit and I caught him and called him out on it. Be aware of this guy, I would not waste money or time on him or his services - or lack there off. read more

Took in an old reel to reel that my wife bought new in the late 1980's, a Pioneer 707. We played it a few times many years ago and it worked but had a lot of tape hiss so I never fooled with it much. After seeing similar ones on e-Bay for $500 or more I decided to take it in for a tune up, cleaning and head alignment. When we got it back I was amazed. I have never heard a reel-to-reel sound so good. The tape hiss is non-existent. I've heard a few tape decks over the years and this one sounds the best. The fellow at Save-On-Sound explained all the problems he found and seems to know tape decks very well. Overall a very good experience. Very read more

I have a 30 year old Carver preamp/tuner that began to cut out when it warmed up. I brought it to a place in the Montrose area and they told me before looking at it that it cannot be fixed in Houston, no one has the schematics anymore (whatever that means). Then I called another in-town company and they wanted $130 because it was "vintage" just to evaluate it, with no assurance it could be repaired. And then I called Save On Sound, and he didn't make it out as a big deal, just $30 cash to evaluate. He replaced the voltage regulator, and it's been working perfectly for about 2 months now. Since then I took my 25 year old Sony CD changer (uses 10-CD magazines) that had a severe mechanical problem, would not eject the magazines. He replaced the disc driver mechanism, and it now works perfectly. Contrary to a previous review, he is not overly expensive, no repair with parts today is going to be cheap. He is in a low-rent area which keeps his costs down, worth the drive there. His English is very good. However, don't be in a hurry to get your piece back, he takes his time and does excellent work. read more
