I normally like getting haircuts here but this last haircut was so bad I will have 2nd thoughts before I come back. I trust the instructor to check the haircut so the customer doesn't leave with a messed up haircut. Well, the instructor didn't even check the haircut. The instructor told the stylist, "Good job". I blame the instructor & myself for the terrible haircut. The instructor should have done the crosscheck without me having to say anything. I am pleased with the service that I receive when I am at the school; however, I am not pleased with how difficult it is to make an appointment with this school. I joined their color club and my Visa is charged each month, then I pay a reduced price for service when I am in the club. It all sounded great...until I realized how difficult it is to make an appointment with this school! First of all, to all these people that leave bad reviews, YOU SIGN A FORM before you get anything done. Why? Because it is a school!!! Those "stylists" are students, they are learning. You might be their first ever color, or haircut. You might be their first ever highlight, or perm/ relaxer. I know hairstylist with 10 years under their belt and they're still learning. Stop complaining that it takes a long time, or the color wasn't like in the picture! Of course it does and it won't! Sometimes you don't get it like in the picture at salons either. And no, the prices are not high at all. They're not even half of a salon pricing. You can't have amazing hair "like in the pictures" and pay $20 Paul Mitchell might not be a fit for everyone, it might not be the perfect school, but don't leave 1 star review for something that you signed a form stating that if your hair falls off it's not their fault because they're still learning, or just because you didn't fit there as a student. I had to write this, because my experience there was a very pleasant one for the most part. For the people who are looking to get something done to their hair but can't afford the salon, I'd say give PM the school a try, or if you don't think you can be open minded about students doing your hair, just get some boxed dye at Walmart and do it yourself. I had a very nice experience at Paul Mitchell The School Sterling Heights. My daughter is also a current student. I see a lot of negative reviews on yelp and I'd like to debunk the majority of these. I had a full head of highlights, a hair treatment, Toner, cut and style while visiting. Yes the time it takes can be longer than expected. You have to be patient and remember they are young adults still learning their craft. They are a little slower but the work is quality. I had instructors checking in during the entire process to make sure everything was going well. My stylist was professional and very friendly. I saw no evidence of click type behaviors as mentioned by some and the student population is very diverse and well balanced. My daughter has enjoyed her time studying here and has always said positive things about her classes and instructors. I met and spoke with several of the instructors while there and evey encounter was very pleasant. My only critique is in regards to my wait time to be greeted by my stylist when I arrived. The staff working the counter should mingle with the people waiting and check in with them in regards to their wait. read more

Never go here as a client! I went for a eye brow wax, hair cut and all over color. Took over 5 hours! I know this is a teaching school and all but the teacher was not helpful at all! My stylist was very nice but the teacher Andrea first quoted me $80 for everything due to my hair length. I agreed. After the teacher walked away I saw a lady next to me who had cut her hair short and loved it. I started discussing cuts with my stylist and I decided to cut 1/2 my hair off, My stylist said well your color will be a less since we don't have to use the extra dye now." I thought even better! When my "all over" color was lighter around my face and missing color in the back and on spots on top I pointed it out to the stylist. She got her teacher who said "come back in 2 weeks and we will just charge you the price of the dye to redo it". So they messed it up, and going to charge ME the price of the dye to fix it? I was shocked but just wanted to be done and leave. I told her I would not be returning and she just said ok and walked away. When I went to pay the teacher said it was $80 and she was giving me a $ 5.00 discount to stay in the $80 dollar quote she gave me in the beginning. I asked why it was the same price if they used 1/2 the dye she had quoted me for in the beginning. She said nothing and just walked away. I was too tired and upset to fight anymore. I know I should have but it was such a bad experience I just wanted to go. After 5 hours I left with my hair mostly dyed but not my roots or random spots because the teacher advised her to do something a little different and it didn't "take" in all areas. I still have dye all over my face (1/2 inch all the way around!), my shirt soaked (stylist did by accident when washing my hair), and the kicker the same price of $80! Another note I tried to tip my stylist with my credit card (I blame the teacher for this mess NOT the stylist was only following directions.) I was told the students can accept cash only. I didn't bring my purse with me so I had nothing to give her and felt awful. I stated I wish someone would have told me that. The receptionist replied "we don't know how you are going to tip." I get that but can't you tell people on the phone or at the very least have a sign up stating that? I was a little early and I could have ran to the bank to get tip money if I would have known. Never again! Run far away from this place... Next time I will dye at home and go to great clips. :( It will be a better job and cheaper! read more

My 1st impression- leena (front desk) RUDE SHE STARTS by lying to me!! Telling me they called me to cancel my appointment!! No MAM! My phone didn't ring! She then tells me mam I left you a voicemail!! I don't have voicemail... Very disappointing and unprofessional school. My whole experience here was a nightmare. I started part time, evening classes and needed to switch to days because of personal issues. I spoke with the director of the program and I told that is was no problem and I will start the following week. 4 days later, I received a call from the financial aid advisor informing me that "that's not how financial aid works" and if I wanted to switch to days it would no longer be covered. And then proceeded to tell me that because I missed the 4 days, even though I was misinformed by the director, that my attendence was poor and I would be dropped any ways. I had no choice because life happens. I received a letter in the mail with a bill of $6,900 for the 4 days I attended and for a kit, and an iPad I did not receive. I received the kit, but never used anything and was willing to bring it back to the school all packaged up and they refused. I explained that I was a single mom and was not in the best financial situation, that's when they refused to answer my calls of voicemails and sent me to collections. I think this school is more about taking your money that helping you become a successful hairdresser. read more

I was a first timer here. A bit expensive for a beauty school. I had a color and cut. In 35 years of going to beauty schools I never paid more or had someone who took so long. I had a 10 am appt and walked out shortly after 2 pm. I was pleased with the color and students did a good job however it took much longer than anticipated. The cut was ok after 3 instructors took their turns. Student lacked confidence and was very unsure of self. I get it. I will go back to my other school of choice. A bit too pricey and my time is a bit more valuable. read more

I came here with three of my girl friends one Tuesday night. Knowing that they close at 10pm, we came in a couple hours before closing time. Upon arrival, we were nicely greeted and we requested for a deep conditioning treatment and a facial. After about 10 minutes, my stylist came to get me and introduced me to her instructor and he explained the deep conditioning treatment and facial procedures. When my stylist was shampooing and conditioning my hair, she did a very sloppy job. Knowing that she was just a student, I didn't mind it too much and let her continue. After the conditioner was in my hair, my stylist told me that there were no more shower caps and that she would have to wrap my hair in plastic wrap. She and another stylist wrapped my head and it was just plain messy and uncomfortable. It was very unpleasant because during the whole process, all they did was complain about how it wasn't holding up and how "ghetto" it was. After they got my hair to hold, I sat underneath the hair dryer for about 15 minutes. When it was time to wash my hair, my stylist told me to lay down at the washing station so that she can begin my facial. The facial was just horrible. Since I had on eye makeup, I asked my stylist to remove it before starting on my facial. She told me that that she cannot touch my eyes and that she will just work around it. Really?! The point of a facial is to clean/cleanse and exfoliate. All she did was put on some exfoliating cream on my face, rub it in real quick, and wiped it off with a towel, which wasn't even warm. It was finally time to blow dry and style my hair. It is about 9:20 pm and I can tell that my stylist was ready to leave because she keep on asking her friends to help her finish and complained how she wants to go home. The whole time she rushed everything and began to have a slight attitude as she blow dried and styled my hair. She would be rough with my hair and then throw the brushes around. I felt very uncomfortable and didn't enjoy the experience at all. Although I gave them ample time to complete my treatment I felt uninvited and was treated not as a client, but as a burden. All in all, I would not return to this place. It was my first time here and will probably be my last. Went here 3 times. First time, I had a good experience because of my stylist. Second time, the stylist didn't dye my hair like the photo I showed her AND she did not give me a bob cut I wanted. It looked like a regular straight short hair cut! The third time...I thought maybe it was the stylist so I will ask for a more experienced stylist...so they gave me an experienced student(or so they say). After she cut it, my layers did not blend well and she cut my bangs all bulky and nasty! That's not even the worst part! The instructor with blond hair came up to check up and asked if I was pleased with my haircut. When I said I would like to see more of my layers blended and bangs not so bulky, she must've had a bad day or something...because she started with the attitude and rolling eyes. As an instructor, she was completely unprofessional! I gave this place one too many tries! Not coming here ever again!!! Gave them several pictures of the balayage technique and they said it was something they could do. 5 , yes 5 hours later my daughter walked out with pretty much single tone nasty bleached blond hair. Her hair was so greasy at the roots when another stylist came over to help blow her hair out she was either sprayin hairspray of dry shampoo in it.If you think you will save a few dollars going here, you won't. I have a friend that is attending this school so I thought I would try her out and give her some clients. I made an appointment first thing, 9:15am is what they told me is their first appointment. I arrived and there was no one on the salon floor. I sat until about 9:25 when all of the students came out and the girl I had an appointment with greeted me and then I had to wait another 5 minutes while she got set up. If students won't be available to start taking clients until 9:30 they shouldn't set the first appointment at 9:15. We discussed what I would like done with my hair and the student and I were in agreement on how to get my hair to the point I wanted it. She discussed it with one instructor who seemed fine with her plan. Another instructor came over and told her she did not have to pre-lighten my hair. I had been looking for a red violet base with bright red on the ends. The student did as she was instructed and despite using two different colors, my hair looks all one color. To make matters worse, this cost me $98! I look like I have all over solid color (no highlights were done). It wasn't what I asked for and it cost me more than if I went to a salon. When I was getting ready to go, the instructor (who wrongfully directed the student) stated I needed some sort of treatment/conditioning and that I need to make an appointment for one. I stated no and she then responded with "Wow, you didn't even pause to think or pretend you would consider." I hate to leave a bad review on the student because I think she has great promise one day and once she's in a salon I definitely will try her out again. However, I will NOT return to an overpriced school that does not teach their students properly. read more

Attended school here. I started year 2015. When I went in to sign my contract with the school to begin classes Brandy told me I would get one on one time. She also assured me that true school would help me and be there for me. They didn't follow through with one thing they promised me. My entire time at that school was hell. I was bullied and harassed by a "leader" my entire time their, Michelle was her name. I went to Lisa and even the owner Tina multiple times, had multiple meetings about these problems and each time they tried to turn it on me. Tried to make it my fault. Even tho 2 months after I left that school Michelle was fired for sexually harassing another student, that student had physical proof on her phone of Michelle asking for inappropriate things. So Lisa & Tina Black, I wasn't lying after all. I was almost finished with that school but I dropped out because I couldn't handle being called a "bitch" and being mistreated by employees anymore. I wanted to transfer to a different school but they told me That I had to pay $24,000 upfront (my tuition) to get my completed hours transferred. What 19 year old has that kind of money? Financial Aid department sucked. They were rude and completely unhelpful. Now I'm stuck paying loans back to a school that did nothing but bring me down and make me hate the industry. So much for the Be Nice or else culture, this school is a joke. Do your self a favor, go to a different beauty school. You will save money and learn the same thing trust me. They have fake and miserable human beings working their, they don't give one fuck about you. They just want your money. UPDATE: After posting this Owner Tina Black messaged me. DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL! If I could give this school 0 stars, I would. I went to Paul Mitchell the School in Sterling Heights expecting to receive a decent education since I was spending $25,000 on this school. I got everything but that. I'll begin my review by saying I am a real student, but I wish to remain anonymous to avoid any backlash from this institution. I could sit here and write for hours about how the educators and students of this school bullied me and others, how the Financial Aid office made us back date official loan papers, or how I was accused of lying on multiple occasions for zero reason. I was not a troubled or difficult student. I was late on occasion and missed school due to personal reasons which began the learning leaders' vengeance for me. This school was ultimately a hell. I'll highlight a few specific moments to paint a picture for you. I once had a young lady with long hair sit in my chair and ask for a pixie cut. This was the first time I had received a big transformation, so I asked my teacher to help me. She looked at my client and said, "If that sat in my chair, I'd just have to wing it," and denied me any advice or help. I carried out the service on my own completely. Another experience I had at this school was when one of the educators laughed at my guest after I finished her makeup service. I had applied makeup to my guest and after, when my learning leader saw, she asked what service she had gotten done. When my guest told her I had done her makeup, she laughed, turned away and say "She doesn't even have anything on her face". My guest and I sat there speechless. I had also been demanded to exit a classroom by the same learning leader after she accused me of lying. I told her I was studying for a test I had that day (mock state boards). She told me I was lying and made me exit the room. A couple hours later, the same learning leader approached me, much more lightheartedly, and apologized for "being a bitch" (her words, not mine) and accusing me of lying. She had asked my final phase teacher about my test which my final phase teacher had confirmed. These are just a FEW of the incredibly harsh things I experienced at Paul Mitchell from the TEACHERS. I had been bullied and picked on by multiple students as well. Which, oddly enough, were the students the school admired. This school runs on favoritism. My friends and I were constantly in trouble for "not" following their inconsistent rules and threatened with suspension and expulsion on multiple occasions. My friend was suspended for being late too many times (there is no given number of tardies you aren't allowed to surpass) , while other students on Phase 2 would leave school early to attend pool parties. If you weren't a favorite of your educators or front-desk coordinators, then you were treated poorly and/or assigned fewer guests. This school exemplifies inequality. The curriculum of this school was no better than it's faculty. This school is unprepared and rushed when it comes to education. They do NOT offer challenging curriculum; only stagnant and repetitive lessons. You are charged $5 per bowl of REAL color to use on your mannequin, otherwise you have to pretend with cholesterol (a conditioning cream). From charging $1 for paper name tags and plastic gloves, which are both required by STATE BOARD, to charging almost $12 for every hour you miss, this school seizes any opportunity to take your money. The moral of the story is: Save your money and attend Michigan College of Beauty or another cosmetology school. They only teach you to pass your boards to get your license, so you might as well save some money. read more

Almost never not satisfied. One time I booked an appointment, got prepped and sat for 30 minutes before staff figured out they had no relaxer. But other times I've had students who really listened to my request when I cur my hair and I was more than happy with the outcome. They use more products than I would like leaving my hair feeling very stiff but other than that I'm usually happy walking out. I would not get eyebrow waxes here as I'm usually finishing what they started when I get home. The deep conditioning merula leaves my hair super soft, after I get home and wash out all their products, and I get one every month. read more

The worst place to ever get your hair done. I have been there twice, and man, both times were a mistake. The first time I went there, I gave them a chance and went there because it's a cheap hair cut. They took a very long time, and I kept telling the stylist what I wanted, and she kept cutting and saying "uh, like this?" And when I was done, it didn't look ANY different. Okay so I went back to get my hair dyed instead of using box dye at home. Man was that a MISTAKE. The prices did not say "starting at $XXX and up!". The lady who was doing my hair, used two bowls of dye. The first one was gone and she said "I'm going to get you more dye, okay?" I said okay. She NEVER told me it costed extra(I'm not there yet though) When I was done, she said the color didn't take to the back of my hair. She said it was my fault because I dye at home, but everytime I use box dye, it gets my whole head yet Paul Mitchel couldn't? So she grabbed yet another bowl of dye, did the back again, and sat me under heat for 30 minutes (when she said 15) and forgot about me. They had a few other girls working on me like I was a hot mess or something. So when I was FINALLY all done, I went to pay and she said it was 60 bucks. I was like "WHAT? HOW?" and she explained because of the extra dye. And I asked for the manager/teacher. She explained it is 30 dollars & UP. She then told me "Well we accept credit cards." I told her this: I don't have money on my credit card. I got thirty F*****g bucks. She then told me that it would be 30 dollars then. NEVER go here, it is TERRIBLE and NOT WORTH IT. I am very pleased with the outcome of my hair! I have dark brown hair naturally and have it lightened to a pretty light blonde. I usually have a ton of foils put in for lightening my roots Bc I think foils have a more natural look. I have been bouncing around trying different hair places each time I need my roots done and have been a little disappointed each time. It's either too brassy or they just don't lighten it enough to match. This most recent time I decided to try the Paul Mitchell school Bc I love their products and think they have high standards with their work. I'm so glad I did! I had a phase 2 student do my foils followed by a toner and a keratriplex treatment. She also styled my hair beautifully. It did take several hours but foul work usually takes long so as long as you go in prepared for your service to take a little longer, they do an exceptional job! read more

Sara #2 did such a great job adding highlights and blending the cut of my hair just now. I really love my hair and enjoyed Sara's professionalism and kindness. Sara really listened to what I wanted as an end result to make sure we were on the same page. When she rinsed my hair it felt like someone who has worked with hair for years. I like that she asked the instructor for guidance when she felt she needed it and listened carefully to instructions then did a wonderful job.
