The UCSD Health Systems campus in La Jolla is massive. If you've never been, give yourself some…read moreextra time to find where you're going. It was my first time there. I had an appointment at the Shiley Eye Institue. It was July of 2025 and there was a lot of construction going on at the campus which made it even more difficult to navigate. I found a parking structure and parked, only to find out that there is no validation and it was $7 for three hours. I was put off a bit. Health care is damned expensive, now you're going to gouge me for an additional seven bucks? C'mon! On top of that, I was constantly checking the time, hoping that three hours was enough. (It was, I was back in my car with 17 minutes to spare). I wandered around a bit before I finally found where I was going. The sprawling campus has some signage, but a "You are here" directory like malls have would be really helpful. After my appointment at Shiley, I had to go to the lab. Even after getting directions, it took me a few minutes of wandering around before I found it.

To the many doctors and nurses for the many that work at this location the many times that I have come the many faces of the interns and the ones just coming out after long hours some of the best doctors and nurses there are many that are working their way up the ladder. I just had a procedure that took place on Monday that was needed to replace a specialized battery which over many years from the wear and tear it had run down. From the condition I have I go through epileptic seizures which had been a great medical and disabling condition with the VNS Implant that I was given and had Implanted. When you have surgery, you can go at so many hours from the late in the afternoon to the early hours and the early morning hours from the early 500am. For many of you never had to get up at 5:00am for many of you that is the earliest only construction people that get up at the time to get ready for work. With many surgeries you can't have blood thinners or have vitamins before you have surgery one thing that I take daily was aspirin to help prevent heart attacks. On the early morning hours, I had a ride pick me up at my house yes, the mornings can be cold for some and for others it's one of the best wake ups in the morning to have a surgical process the results go different ways. When I had arrived at the Hospital it was about 5:00am in the morning there was a few people that were waiting at the desk having to check in at the desk when you come to the UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla I was greeted by the surgical staff was checked in at the desk and had to check with the main desk. The main lobby of the UCSD Hospital is one that is of the best in design and the hospital can be one that has designer furniture and the large windows that give you the wide looks of the main campus and the many surgical centers that are close by. it long When I was taken to the second floor where I was directed where the surgical center and the many people that were waiting for the appointment times. When you come to the surgical center you don't have to wat long they take right in where they can get you ready. UCSD Medical Surgical center is one of the largest when you come to the second the staff they ask if you if have eaten anything that is nothing after 1200am and nothing to drink. The type of surgery you have are greeted by the doctors and the surgery nurses they take your vitals and get you ready to have the IV procedure readied for surgery. To the great staff at the surgical floor that has helped me get through the long surgical process when they take you to surgery you may be given a prep injection the surgical centers, they have been some of the best with many of them can be very cold. The treatment that I had received was the best from the surgical nurses they stayed with me through the prep process and when they brought me back to the recovery room. For many people that have had surgery there is so much you go through and the support that you get from the caring staff I want to say thank you for your support and your life saving help which helped me get through one of the most important surgeries. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer this has been one of the greatest experiences and the many nurses and surgical staff which came and saw me there was one thing, I saw so much care and support for when you have people that monitored your sleep asked to have you started walking. The main thing that I can say is that the UCSD is one center as part of the Hospital is one of the best surgical departments very welcoming.

I made an appt 2 months ahead, knowing that I was going to get fitted for CROS HA and figure that would give me some time to either like them or hate them. I have not seen Dr Calzada yet, but am looking forward to the appt. My ENT told me this. "Dr Calzada is "Tops" but many of the people he referred, complained about the staff. I did get a call today to see if I could come in for an updated hearing test. No problem!!! Already for an early AM consult.

There's a reason this place sits at 2.9 stars (at the time of this review) -- and it's well…read moredeserved. I had nasal surgery here in August. In October, I saw a different ENT at the same practice who flat-out told me the first surgery did absolutely nothing. His exact issue? He had no idea what the first ENT even did, because he now needs to go in and perform procedures that the first ENT claimed she already did. Let that sink in. I'm now being told I need a second surgery because the first one was essentially a waste of time, money, and recovery. And that's just the beginning. I have now been waiting THREE MONTHS (and counting) just to be scheduled for this second surgery. After a month of silence, I called -- they said I'd be contacted within a week. I waited four more weeks. Nothing. Called again, left a message, never got a call back. After another three weeks, I was told they only have one person who schedules surgeries and she's "busy." That is not my problem. It should NOT take three months just to schedule a surgery -- especially one required because your first surgery failed. Appointments are just as bad. At my last visit, the waiting room was packed when I arrived. They checked me in and had me sit down. Every patient who checked in after me was told the ENT wasn't even there because he was performing surgery elsewhere and "should" show up soon. I wasn't told that. After watching several people get warned while I sat there clueless, I went to the front desk and asked if I was waiting for the same ENT. The receptionist said yes. When I asked why no one told me he wasn't there, her response was: "Oh, I forgot." Probably because she was too busy gossiping with the other person at the front desk. I had driven over an hour to get there. If I had known the doctor wasn't even on site, I would've canceled -- either before leaving home or immediately upon arrival. People in that waiting room had already been waiting over TWO HOURS. There were about 10 of us all waiting for the same doctor who wasn't even present. I complained, and only then was I pushed to the front when the doctor did show up an hour later. If I hadn't said anything, I would've been waiting 4-5 hours. That is beyond unacceptable. It's disrespectful, disorganized, and borderline negligent. Between the failed initial surgery, the months-long delay just to schedule corrective surgery, the lack of basic communication, the extreme wait times, and the financial impact to me personally, this practice has shown a consistent disregard for patients' time, trust, and well-being. If you value competent care, transparency, and respect for your time, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

I'm leaving this review in hopes it prompts internal reflection and better continuity of care for…read morefuture patients. I came to this clinic with MRI-confirmed disc injuries, including annular fissures and mild canal narrowing at C5-C7, along with persistent cervical pain that had not responded to conservative care. I had completed physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, massage, and multiple rounds of medication. Early in my treatment, a cervical epidural steroid injection (CESI) was presented as a next step if symptoms continued. I followed through with everything recommended. When my symptoms persisted, I expressed that I was ready to move forward with the CESI and made it clear that cost would not be a barrier--I was willing to pay cash. Despite this, the CESI was then walked back with shifting justifications: first citing cost, then later saying the disc bulges were "too small," even though the imaging findings had been available for weeks and hadn't changed. There has been no new information medically--only a changing explanation that doesn't align with the original plan of care. As a patient, this experience has been frustrating. If the provider or clinic is simply uncomfortable with performing the procedure, that should be communicated clearly and early--not repositioned after the patient agrees to proceed. I'm seeking a second opinion elsewhere and hope this review encourages a more transparent and consistent approach for future patients.
